Sega has always been and will always be under rated, I only played double dragon on the master system but it was way better than the NES one, oh and some RPG that I don't remember too well(I was like 5 at the time), The Genisis had tons of good arcade classics and more action than on snes in general(xmen on snes was garbage compared to either genisis game) Sonic is better than mario and was more popular in the days of genisis. The Saturn always had a better version of almost every game that was multi platform and it was always particularly noted on capcom games(Mega Man 8 on saturn had an extra boss!). The Dreamcast did online gaming, and tons of fun and original games, nothing compared to it.
The truth about sega though is it was always the console of the "hardcore gamer" and they are not noticed by most of the world. They were always dancing ontop of everyone's toes though, the master had everything above nes but didn't have the number of games going to it or the recognition. The Genisis was made before the snes and had noticably worse graphics, then went on with add ons that confused the consumer straight through the saturn that was virtually ignored because people who didn't pay attention to gaming didn't know what they were to buy from sega. The Dreamcast really was only there to compete with N64, it had only 1 analog stick, it had no dvd.The Dreamcast was ahead of the game and behind the game, only now does online gaming compare to dc, that alone could have kept the DC alive in theory , it had nodual analog or dvd.
The PSone had built such momentum almost anything couldhave been released as ps2 and everyone would love it and ignore everything else(I argue that they did put out a piece of rubbish and everyone did). That is the core of what happend in the last generation, we got nothing from sony with all the producers trying to go there when there wasn't anything of value there, the other 2 consoles didn't have as many games and ended up virtually ignored, but still releasing way better content then PS2.
