IMO 7 was the best of the whole series, followed closely by 10.  But i will admit i never played 6 and was too young during the snes days to get into jrpgs.

what exactly makes 6 the best of all time, as hailed by countless sites?

I haven't played 7 or 10 but just play it and you'll understand.  It had great characters (albeit some were underused), a great battle system, amazing soundtrack, great plot, and great graphics for the system.

It had a great story, battle system, music, gameplay, characters, etc. I never played FF7 but it likely hasn't aged anywhere near as well and FFX only had a great battle system and music.

I am very close to the end of FFVI and I can say that I think (I'm not positive yet) that I still like VII a tiny bit more. I know for a fact I like VI better than X. My reasons are the story is fantastic so far, I love and feel connected to most of the characters and they all seem to have great back stories. There is a LOT of exploration and optional content. The soundtrack may be the best in the series... you seriously just need to go to youtube and listen to it whether you played the game before or not. The battle system is also traditional yet deep.... I could go on and on.

My problem with X was it was just very linear and I felt restricted. Kind of like FFXIII, I don't know why more people don't give X crap but they give XIII a lot of crap. Plus, I had a hard time really caring for the story or characters which is very important to me. The music was pretty good. Honestly though, I only got about halfway through the game.

VII is still the best but I'll wait until I finally finish VI and let the dust settle.

I started playing FFIX some as well right now and I'm getting into that quite a bit.

They were all good up to 10.

however, my vote goes for 9.

7 is a good game but over rated in the series.

7-10 were all great games though.

I said FF7 probably hasn't aged as well. FF7 is not in 2D, making it pretty much a guarantee that it, at least graphically (and probably by extension load times and early design of 3D environments and towns), has not aged well.

FF6 had a great story, and the characterization was much better than FF7 or 10 IMO. Plus the things they were able to do with the limitations of the Super NES/Famicom hardware was astounding.

Better story, better world, the main character wasn't a little female dog. And the graphics aged better than either (just because I'm a 2D junkie).

When playing FF VI, it makes FF VII feel like somewhat of a rehash (except in 3D). FF VI was a very bold game in almost every aspect, and it still holds up extremely well (better than FF VII, IMO).

Pretty much what everyone else said, better story, characters, graphics aged much better etc. the only gripe I had on FFVI is that it was far too easy, especially when you discover that hidden area in the second half of the game.

Balanced story, better characters, better music, not on 4 discs (only version of VII I ever played was the original). I love VII, but VI was marginally better.

Final Fantasy X, on the other hand, had horrible charcters, terrible writing, focused more on that terrible love story between Yuna and Tidus than the actual plot (which wasn't too bad, actually), etc. About the only thing I think it did ok was the combat system for eliminating problems with the time gauge and speeding up combat. I also didn't think the music was terrible, but I never found it to be the great, timeless tunes some of you do.

It's been YEARS since I played the Final Fantasy games, and X is what killed it for me. I barely remember what happened in any of them, but the feelings of dread and annoyance I had with X will always be there. It's not the WORST video game out there, but I think of it as the game that killed JRPGs for me.

I personally think that 4,8,9, and 10 are better than either 6 or 7.

1 and 2 are about even with 6

I guess I would order it like this overall 9, 4, 10, 8, 1, 7, 2, 6, 5, 3, 12, 13 I did not include 11 because I never played it, and I feel it should not have been numbered as part of the main series...

**Note** the highlighted four can go in about any order though.

I think 10 is noticeably better than 6 for several reasons:

  • Superior artistic design: the environments in Spira are beautiful in a way that the limited visuals of FFVI simply can't match. Final Fantasy X is visual poetry. FFVI does the best it can with the SNES hardware and admittedly does a wonderful job of making the world feel bleak and hopeless through a muted, dark color palette, but it simply does not compare in terms of actual aesthetic beauty. I dare anyone to find me an environment in FFVI as visually and atmospherically compelling as the Thunder Plains or the Zanarkand Ruins or the Moonflow or Maccalania Forest.
  • Much better music. The music in FFX is deeply atmospheric, deeply ambient, extremely layered, delicately beautiful and exotic whereas FFVI has a few very powerful tunes (like Celes's theme, Dancing Mad, Tera's theme, Relm's theme) and then alot of standard 16-bit fare. I don't think any tune in FFVI even starts to compare to Someday The Dream Will End. There is simply more sonic texture present in that one track (and many others) than in any of FFVI's music, which sounds positively tinny in comparison, though I do realize that that has alot to do with the sound technology of the day.
  • A deeper story. The conflict in FFVI mostly has to do with Kefka's desire for chaos and destruction. The idea that that somewhat standard conflict in any way offers more story depth than the idea of Sin and Yevon and the way in which uncertainty and chaos causes Spirans to scapegoat their own lifestyles and their use of technology is just an insane notion IMO. FFVI's story strength comes from the way that it weaves together its immaculate cast and the way that it presents its inventive scenarios. The actual themes are far more pedestrian than what FFX attempts. FFX also admirably highlights the conflict between utilitarianism and a respect for invidividual life through the Al Bhed's disaste for the ritual of sacrificing summoners. If there are any philosophical debates played out in FFVI, they certainly don't stand out because I don't actually remember any philosophical tension or conflict. The tension and conflict in FFVI seemed entirely based on good versus evil paradigms whereas FFX doesn't rely on that.
  • Despite the weird hate for FFX's cast, FFX actually has much more character development than FFVI. For instance, Tidus's hate for his father stems from a lack of attention from his mother and he tricks himself into thinking that Jecth's general douchiness is the real reason; Wakka's hate for machina stems from the fact that his brother Chappu ditched the sword Wakka made for him in favor of a machina-type weapon. Wakka's hate for machina further feeds into his bigotry against the Al Bhed, who the story most closely associates with machina. FFVI does not that have that sort of depth in terms of character motivation; none of the main characters in FFVI have such a well-fleshed out character flaw as Wakka's bigotry, which is ingrained into his character by experiences in his life. Celes has some notable character flaws, but they are not as deeply explored. So people can talk all the sh!t they want about Tidus's annoying personality, but the character development in FFX is actually quite robust in the case of some of its key characters. Actually, one of the most loved characters in FFX (Auron) has less character development than Tidus or Wakka, yet people think Auron is a stronger character not for thematic reasons, but because of coolness factor, which is shallow IMO. Furthermore, Wakka's motivation for hating machina is much more subtle than something like that segment where you go into Cyan's soul and set it at rest, which was about as subtle as a wall of bricks, tho brilliant from a pacing/gameplay perspective.
  • Spira is alot more lived in and has much deeper lore than FF6's world. Spira is full of ritual and culture, helped along by reccuring NPCs. FF6's world? Not so much. It seems positively generic in comparison.
  • As for dialogue, both games have their strong and weak/cheesy moments in terms of dialogue. Honestly, if you're looking for really solid dialogue, Final Fantasy is probably not the best place to find it in general. Persona has much stronger dialogue. But FFX definitely has more character development through its dialogue simply because the developers offer longer dialogue scenes. FFVI, like alot of older RPGs, tends to be more thin in terms of its dialogue scenes. I guess one could argue a less is more approach, but I've have to know what is particularly compelling about FFVI's dialogue in relation to the other games in the series.
  • FFX is much more balanced in terms of its combat portion.
  • One area where I think FFVI wins is that it has a much more interesting way of progressing the player from one gameplay event to the other whereas FFX is a standard linear journey in terms of its progression.
  • FFVI also has better sidequests.

So there are a few areas where I think FFVI does better but I think FFX wins in the areas that matter the most. I do think FFVI is better than FFVII tho simply because it aged so much better.

focused more on that terrible love story between Yuna and Tidus than the actual plot (which wasn't too bad, actually), etc. WiiCubeM1

I think this claim is utterly false. There actually wasn't much romance between Yuna and Tidus at all. It was mostly small moments of romantic tension here and there. The only time the romance was deeply expounded upon is in that famous CGI scene in Maccalania Forest and the ending. Sin, Yevon, Seymour's antics, and the pilgrimage in general got much more attention than Yuna and Tidus's romance, which amounted to a bunch of awkward flirting at best pre-Maccalania.

Furthermore, it is perfectly valid that a game about young people explore romance, especially if one assumes that stories are meant to reflect human behavior and emotion. And despite that badly-executed laughing scene, I don't see what was particularly wrong with Tidus and Yuna's romance. It seemed to me that Yuna became affectionate towards Tidus because he brought spontaneousness into her life, which makes perfect emotional sense IMO. Tidus's side of the romance was not as well fleshed out, but it was clear that he came to deeply admire her strength and resolve.

It looks as though we have about the same taste in our FF games, so I think you are in for a treat with 4. It is by far better then 6 in my opinion. The character development and likeability is right up there with the best the franchise has to offer. Everything from the flow, to the spells. to characters, and story are great. I hope you agree after you get into the game. I feel 4 might have the most recognizable characters for further installments in the franchise. I remember getting this game for a gift as a kid on the SNES and thinking about the huge bounds it made in gameplay from the original... however, the whole US release numbering/ japanese release numbering still gets me confused to this day... lol

I kind of wish that I would have gotten the PS1 version since I heard the SNES version was censored, but downloadng stuff off the Virtual Console is just so damn convenient and easy.

The Opera Scene had so much impact back in the day. It's still quite bombastic after all these years, even considering the story senarios we get today.:)

I consider FFVI one of my all time favorite games, if my username didn't give that away, for all things previously mentioned. I really haven't been a FF fan since Amano and Uematsu left.

I didn't find FF VI to be particualrly memorable in any fashion.  I'm not a fan of VII, but I'd rather play VII and X (which I think is possibly the pinnacle of the series) anyday.

FF VI had some... interesting characters I suppose.  Out of the many that you get to pick, the only ones that immediately stick out in my mind were Terra and Shadow. Shadow not even for his persona, but just because he was my favorite character to use.  Celes was okay as well I suppose.  But everyone else I didn't really give 2 fvcks about.

The gameplay was so broken it was laughable.  Espers and magic aren't even required execpt to perhaps spam strong Cure spells on your party.  This is the part of the game I really didn't like.

I can't remember a single piece of music from the soundtrack either, aside from the world map theme, which I thought was great.

I mean.. I really can't comment on VI because I really didn't enjoy almost any aspects of it.  I think I've played and beaten it two or three times for whatever reason and I still cannot remember it for the most part.  It was just entirely forgettable for me.

I wouldn't say that 6 is better than 7, but it comes pretty damn close.  If I were to rank the FF games that I've played including spinoffs it'd go something like:

7, 6, Tactics, 9, 12, 3, 8, 1, Dirge of Cerberus, 13=10, Crisis Core.

The ones in red are the only FF games I would considerd to be "bad."  I didn't rank 11, which I quite enjoyed because it is difficult to compare a MMO to singleplayer games.  I also have FF4 complete for the psp waiting on my shelf when I get the time.

what makes FF6 better is:

 - the graphics are better and the environments easier to navigate

 - the characters have eyes and are more expressive

 - four party members in a battle instead of just 3

 - massive playable cast (the biggest in the main/numbered series?)

 - no optical disc loading times, meaning it takes only about 2 seconds to start battling once a battle is triggered. (Discount this reason if you're playing a PS1/PSN version instead of a cart-based version)

 - FF7 has nibelheim, golden saucer, and temple of the ancients. FF10 has blitzball. FF6 just has that boring flashback sequence, similar to nibelheim, but not nearly as long, and no battles.

VI is the greatest FF game ever made because of the characters, music, world, enemies, battle system, etc...everything. Everything makes this game better.

it depends on your taste. It's hard to pinpoint what exactly makes one better than the other but the truth is that FF6 was the real breakthrough no only for the franchise but for the entire genre when it comes to story-telling and character development. I always say that I prefer FF7 but when I really think about it I don't know what to say because they both are so different and neither are perfect. FF7 is more like an anime while FF6 is more like an epic so it's kind of easy to predict which one a person will choose based on their taste like for example: most Americans detest anime but love stories like Lords of the Rings so someone like that would say that he prefer FF6 meanwhile an anime/manga fan would say FF7.

Objectively speaking I would say that FF6 is the better game because of the stuff it did at the time but based on my taste I prefer FF7. I like anime and stories like that. The big sword, the badas* looking antagonist, them Tifa's bewbs... I like FF7 music too because it's so unique! Just listen to this:

it's a playlist BTW, most if not the entire sountrack is there. Listen to a little bit of each one of them and tell me if that's not unique!

FF6 is more like an anime while FF6 is more like an epic so it's kind of easy to predict which one a person will choose based on their taste like for example: most Americans detest anime but love stories like Lords of the Rings so someone like that would say that he prefer FF6 meanwhile an anime/manga fan would say FF7.

It's not any more unique than some of the other FF soundtracks.
