I'm the sort of player that dosen't go looking for a hardcore challenge with games, as I generally just like to have fun with them. So I typically start most games on medium setting (easy if I'm really bad at it). And if I feel I'm up to the challenge, I'll give higher difficulties a go.
Typically the hardest since that will force me to use more forethought before advancing into enemy engagement. It's the reason why I love stealth games so much.
EDIT: That is, of course, bearing in mind that the game doesn't include mechanics that are totally new to me.
Easy due to simply wanting to be able to complete it. When I do complete the game I often go back to play it at a higher difficulty, though. I completed MW2 on the highest difficulty. It was torture, but I did it...
Depends on what I'm playing. If it's an RPG or shooter style, or puzzle game I tend to go for the hardest setting they allow for. If it's a arcade fighter however I tend to noob it up a bit so I can get used to the game.
I always start on Normal. If the game is very well made I will usually complete a second playthrough on a higher difficulty.
Depends on how well my system runs it and how much I'm familiar with the genre. COD games, I usually play on hardest. GRAW2 I played on hardest. Max Payne 3 I played on normal since I was figuring out the best tactics, and even on normal it was a challenge. Racing games I play with easy physics, but difficult opponents. I like the Need For Speed go-kart feeling.
If I'm serious about the game, get good framerates, and really like the concept right off the bat, I'll play it on the hardest.
I always start my games on Normal. Just way I played it since NES days. Except Halo, I start on Heroic there for some reason.
Usually hard mode, I like the feeling of accomplishment defeating hard enemies. I save the hardest mode for last and usually like to finish them but some rare cases it ruins the game for me so i don't do it.
some examples are : Silent hill 2 (it get's annoying fighting in that game. Games like that shouldn't be all action) , Doom (i love playing it on ultra violence but nightmare just kills it for me, game basically turn's into a run away dont stop to shoot speed run.
what game difficulty do you play your games at?
I play mostly on easy these days. Having a bunch of games that I havent finished yet. Playing them all on easy seems to be the best bet for me to finish them all. Plus im lazy.
