Ikaruga is a very overrated game. I would mention some others, but Ikaruga gets so much praise from the "hardcore" gamers that like to write on-end about how much they love shmups and how they've been mourning their demise, so on and so forth. Hypocrites -- all of them.
I don't really know that any games are overrated.A game's only overrated if I'm right about it sucking, while the majority is wrong about it being good. That's unlikely.
The typical "overrated" argument usually goes something like this: "I think XX game sucks, but a lot of people enjoy it. Therefore, due to my God-given understanding of games, it realy does suck and is void of any good qualities. Everyone who does like it must be unsophisticated, stupid, or fooling themsleves." How arrogant.
You whats funny the MGS series didn't become so overrated until MGS4 was announced for the PS3 and Sony andSony fanboys started to hype the hell out of MGS4. Iremember a few years back people would make fun of me because I loved the MGSseries. Itis kind of funny thinking back the MGS series was such a niche series. As for the topicthe Gears series, Halo series and Final Fantasy X they don't deserve the hype.Metal Gear Solid franchise.

Agreed, plus Halo series. And IMO, there are more underrated games.Call of Duty, and GTA come to mind
Mr_Nordquist
Freedom Fighters and Kingdom Hearts. They are two moderately older games that come to my mind that I seriously was not impressed with.huladog123
i really dont understand how you can say freedom fighters was overrated, to my knowledge its regarded as one of the most underrated games of the last generation.

LOL! I like the way you think.
LOL well no 'overrated' thread is ever complete with FFVII in it. Okay, so I'll use the Wii argument and say that FFVII has sold more copies and made more money than any other FF game in existence, which more than justifies its greatness and standing in the industry.
The most successful doesn't mean the best.........commericial breakthroughs can be achieved from dumbing down the product or making it more accessable to the mainstream. FFVII may be the commericial best, but for many who played the entire series, will go with either IV or VI.LOL well no 'overrated' thread is ever complete with FFVII in it. From personal experience, I'd say that GTA IV was overrated by about half a point. It never lived up to the 10/10 that it was given for me. There were certain holes in gameplay that left it feeling a bit empty. It's not the most overrated though, I suppose. Empire Total War, maybe. The amount of bugs and crashesmakes me question the 9 + that some reviews give it.

FFVII wasn't dumbed down, really. It was always inaccessible to some gamers in a sense. And it has elements which challenge more "hardcore" players. It isn't really overrated, just old. Just because it's popular, doesn't mean it's bad or overrated, either. Far from it.Something can be amassive hit and yet stillretain its quality if it fits the bill. The Wii is arguably massively popular because of its novelty appeal. Yet series such as Final Fantasy gained popularity because of their time-gained reputation for good games and solid brand name. It is a poor argument in the least to say that popular is automatically "bad".

Its not dumbed down, except for maybe some of the characters, but the hero is definitaly more accessable to the mainstream than, say, the VI characters, Terra or Celes.. Its true that something can be a massive hit and retain its quality, but VII is a step down from VI in characters and in story telling and I view it is one of the worst in the series, after the Faicom trilogy. The narrative collapases after you leave Midgar and some of the characters, Barrett for example, are done poorly. Its not dumbed down, except for maybe some of the characters, but the hero is definitaly more accessable to the mainstream than, say, the VI characters, Terra or Celes.. Compared to other Final Fantasies, yes, it does have a relatively weak story and some things are missing from it. Yet the atmosphere is brilliant, to me.

Dude, I usually just troll the forums, but this was so funny, I had to let you know about it. Btw, I agree with your viewpoint.most modern games to be honest...
I miss the time where games could be complex as h*ll, and take hours to learn the simplest things.
It is like its a big No No if games are either deep or complicated nowadays, they usually have 3-4 mechanics the entire game builds on, and god forbit if it is acturally hard.
It is as if the newer the generation we look at, the more streamlined it becomes, and it hurts to think about... Honestly watching people complain about a game being over 10 hours because it cant keep thier intrest is kinda scary.
All this ofcourse has something to do with one very important fact: We have seen the gameplay type before, when new games comes out, they rarely surprise, or add alot of new, becuase it is getting harder and harder to come with ideas. We have allready seen and experienced so much that any new game adds very little to what we know and love.

I think the GTA series and Halo series are overrated; the first games in each of these respective series were really good and revolutionary, but the rest of the sequels following on from them just kept the same gameplay with only maybe one or two gameplay changes, along with obvious graphical changes and story changes. People were just sucked into the hype and memories of the first games. PG_ChimpYou do know that GTA 3 was not the first GTA game, right?
