What do you think a game must have for you to give it a 10/10? Also, how which games over the years (judging by their time of release and relative to the console) have you given 10's to.drekula2
Oblivion. Greatest game of all-time, period. That is my measuring stick for games.

please tell me you are joking? Â If not, you discrase your avatar and sig. Â
I sayÂ
Ocarina of Time and Super Metroid are 2 of the best examples. Â Also MGS4 and others.

Super Metroid is a fine example. It was my all time favorite game until I played Neverwinter Nights. Then Oblivion replaced that.
No game is perfect, but i give 10/10's sparingly to games which do everything that I expect them to.
I've only ever given 7 top-score's:
None of which are flawless, all have parts which could be improved upon.
I've given 13 games 9.5/10, and all of those could be a 10 at the time that i'm playing them. But the difference is my 10/10 games are not only great games but have each generated memories or experiences that have stuck in my mind, even years after.Â
There are only 5 games I've played that, IMO, deserve it:
I'm finally about to start playing The Last of Us, so lets see if that game gives my list a 6th member.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is definitely  a 10/10 game.
Â
Other than that, FFX comes pretty close, IMO. Oblivion/Skyrim with all the mods available are damn close too.
Best game of all time in your opinion is one thing, but if you give games actual 10/10's not only are you not a gamer in my eyes, but you will always do odd comparisons and slash scores of games as long as you have that bias for those games. Also any game that plays similar to a game you rated 10/10 you should not be allowed to review it.Jakandsigz
I'm sure if you were reviewing human beings you'd give yourself a 10/10, that would then make you ineligible to have an opinion on anything to anyone.
There's a little more to it, but basically I give 10/10 to games with timeless superb gameplay, music, atmosphere, length, and lasting appeal. If a game is good, but I think it hasn't or won't age well, I won't give it a 10. Thus, the only games I've given a perfect score to are:
Streets of Rage 2-3
Sonic 1-3 & Knuckles + CD
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
To me, being timeless is so key, because a truly great game should be just as much fun to play decades later from the first time you played it.

Good thing nobody gives a sh!t what you think.
To me a ten represents the best game ever made. Â Not necessarily a perfect game. As such, there can only be one 10 for me and that's Majora's Mask.

Not sure where this response came from.Games I would give a 10 without rounding it up:
Games that are close to being a 10:
I guess I would give a 10 to these games, although that doesn't mean I would recommend them all
Baldurs Gate 2
Fallout 2
Planescape Torment
Deadly Premonition
Ogre Battle 64
Bushido Blade 2
The Walking Dead
Fire Emblem 4
Mario 3
Mario World
Mark of the Ninja
Persona 4
Bastion
Witcher
Witcher 2
Paper Mario
Suikoden 2
Tales of Vesperia
Der Langrisser
SMT Nocturne
Jagged Alliance 2
Castlevania SOTN
Mega Man X3
None, I don't think any game deserves a 10, there's always some flaw to me :p
But games that are closest to it:
Xenoblade Chronicles
Metroid Prime
F-Zero GX
Super Smash Brothers Melee
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
Super Mario 64
Paper Mario 64
Pokemon Gold
Mega Man 2
Wario Land 3
Advance Wars Dual Strike
I could keep going...
Â
Â
My list would be composed of star wars kotor, halo ce, sonic 2, and mariobros 3. To be a 10/10 you need a good story, good music, Â solid gameplay, and be able to replay without getting bored. The titles I listed IMO were groundbreaking or gamechangers.
None, imo.
"Perfect scores" are nonsense if you ask me.
But if there's a game I'd give a "9.8", it would be Ocarina of Time but only in it's time, not today. (it's obviously much less impressive today)
Games like Doom, Half-Life, Mario 64, Street Fighter II: CE/Turbo, MGS, Gran Turismo, ect. would rank very highly also. (in their times, of course)
Although I don't think any game is truly perfect, my 10's are based on legendary fun factor and genre. I have played a crapload of games and I give these my approval.
Breath of Fire II
Breath of Fire III
Contra III: The Alien Wars
Time Splitters: Future Perfect
Morrowind
Oblivion
Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball
Metal Warriors
SOCOM 1 and 2
some others I can't think of as well... do these games deserve perfect 10's? In a perfect world... no
However, they are some of the best games I have ever played, and I have played thousands.
To me a 10/10 would be a game that I have almost nothing bad to say about. I've been gaming since the Atari 2600 days, so when people recommend something that came out -this- gen I tend to think that they are just naming their favorite recent game and not really looking at gaming history as a whole, but I have to agree with MGS4 (even though it's not legacy, obviously). There wasn't really any part of that game that dragged or failed to entertain. I would hold MGS3 in similar regard, although it's somewhat dwarfed by the epic scale of MGS4. Most classic games I would have a hard time calling a 10/10 because in hindsight, almost all of them had design issues just by virtue of the era in which they were developed. Things like ridiculous difficulty curves, the ability to "break" your main progression without even knowing it, etc hold a lot of classic games back.
Even Ocarina of Time, which is regarded by many as the best Zelda, dragged horribly for me at times with slow overland travel (early on) and ambiguous objectives. FF7, which is one of my all time classics, is still a turn based JRPG with random encounters which is a bit of a niche category.

While i understand the reason for people not giving 10/10 to titles, i think it's foolish to ignore the rating entirely. Because there are lots of 9 or 9.5 games (at least in my lists) and therefore no ways to differentiate between the merely excellent games and the ones you love unconditionally.
Being a gamer is to understand that no game is perfect in every way, and a score of 10 is more a score of 9.8 or 9.9. But more importantly, for other people looking-on it's an indication of what represents the ideal game for you.
Worth a mention.

I think certain games like Super Mario bros 3 (talking about really far back) have aged very well. The mechanics were already great and they still are.
Battlefield 1942 and Dark Souls would be 10 for me. Really close would be Ocarina of Time, Grand Theft Auto 4, Super Metroid, Mario 64, and mostly the games people already mentioned here.AdventureTime55
I really enjoyed Dark Souls, but the reason I can't give it a 10/ 10 (aside from the hair pulling frustration that pops up) is that the entire way the game is structured is inherently repetitive. Now, I enjoyed the game for what it was, but that's just it... The fact that it's so repetitive turns tons of people off, and understandably so. While it's great for people like you and me who don't mind (or hell even enjoy) the repetition, it's a huge speed bump for people who don't like it.
Final Fantasy X
Diablo II
Pokemon Red & Blue
Command & Conquer Red Alert 2
Ocarina of Time
Guild Wars (when it was in its prime)
I give 10s to games that I have deep nostalgic connections with. They're the games that I find difficult to look at from an objective standpoint anymore because I've loved them for such a long time. All of them have flaws (particularly FFX and Pokemon) but I'd give them 10s anyway because I overlook those flaws and just see the flaws as part of the game's charm. This is why I would not make a good professional game reviewer.
Games I would give a 10 without rounding it up:
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Metroid Prime
- Super Mario Bros.
- Super Mario Galaxy 2
- Chrono Trigger
- Super Metroid
Games that are close to being a 10:
- Final Fantasy IX
- Super Mario World
- Sonic 3 and Knuckles
- Super Mario Galaxy
- Resident Evil 4
- Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword
Seabas989
10/10's are simple to me: any game that has little to no flaws, has aged well, and is one of my favorite games.
For example, the only flaw in Chrono Trigger is the translation in the SNES version.
Goldeneye
It was a milestone for the fps genre. Far better than all 1997 PC shooters. I don't even play with autoaim, this is given by the fact how perfect the controls are.
Rareware, the real fps masters. This game is played by me and my friends very often.
A few other games such as
Perfect Dark, Banjo Tooie, Donkey Kong Country 2, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Ocarina of Time,
Majoras Mask, Timesplitters 2, Timesplitters 3, Gran Turismo 4, Project Cars
would earn perfect scores as well.
I NEVER rated a game a 10. No game is perfect. BUT I rated a few games with 9.6s to 9.9s. I am very picky with the scores. Here are the games with those scores.
The Orange Box - PC - 9.9
Deadly Premonition - PS3/360 - 9.8
Super Mario World - SNES/GBA - 9.7
F.E.A.R. - PC - 9.7
Goldeneye 007 - N64 - 9.7
Persona 4 Golden - VITA - 9.7
Mass Effect 2 - PC/360/PS3 - 9.6
Final Fantasy X - PS2 - 9.6
Super Mario 64 - N64 - 9.6
TimeSplitters Future Perfect - PS2/GC - 9.6
The Last of Us - PS3 - 9.6
Â
All the remaining games are 9.5 or less. :P
