For me it's the battlefield series my favorite BF game of all time is Battlefield 2 the game was slower pace and tactical but not a simulation this was the perfect pacing for me. Once the series started the Bad Company games the BF games got more arcadey and started feeling more and more like COD which I'm not a fan of that gameplay. I always have some hope that maybe one day the series will go back to it's roots although I highly doubt it.

I'm gonna go with Crysis series. Man, the first Crysis game was a huge leap for PC of it's time, follow by Crysis Warhead, those games were at there best in terms of gameplay. When Crysis 2/3 I didn't like how dumb down the gameplay was, but however, I manage to be okay-ish with the gameplay in Crysis 3, but this isn't saying much.

Question: What is a gaming series that you use to enjoy but they changed the gameplay mechanics to a style you didn't like?

This question surprisingly comes very easy for me to answer. The series which comes to mind is DeadSpace; more specifically DeadSpace 3. I was actually dedicated to this particular series. The developers seem to have turned a game that was once referred to as an amazing survival game into a simple survival shooter. There were not many parts of the campaign which made me feel like I did in the first DeadSpace on board the USG Ishimura. Granted, you were given new ways to explore the world of DeadSpace with the ability to travel between ships; which offered new and improved mission sets to help with the story. My apologies, sometimes I tend to get off track. To get back to the question at hand. The developers changed how you play DeadSpace by making it more combat action-oriented rather than focus on Issac simply being an engineer trying to cope with everything he had experienced up to this point. If interested, check out the article from 2012; DeadSpace 3

Crysis is the big one.

Doom 3 as well. But they fixed it with 4.

Agree Crysis was amazing but the sequels where dumbed down the same exact thing happen to the F.E.A.R. series too. Once both series became Mulitplatform they changed for the worst. That was that awful period in gaming when almost every FPS where trying to be like COD and there where alot of casualties of great series that where ruined.

crysis - the scope and scale shrank significantly to accommodate consoles, and the plot of 2 had only but the most tenuous connection to what happened in crysis and warhead. despite that i didn't mind crysis 2. crysis 3, visuals aside, i thought was horrendous.

far cry - fc2 had an interesting premise but was ruined by horrible execution. everything from 3 onwards was stuck through ubisoft's quantity over quality open world templating machine they use for assassin's creed, ghost recon and watch dogs.

splinter cell - blacklist is barely recognisable from the first three iconic games in the series.

rainbow 6 - loved the early games and didn't mind las vegas. ubi's decision to abandon the sp campaign in siege was really disappointing.

mass effect - probably not an opinion shared by many but i much preferred the rough around the edges rpg-y first mass effect to the streamlined tps sequels that followed

D00M III already seems covered in this thread above, but I'll add. It's a poorly designed corridor Horror game and with weak sounding weapons and one note monster A.I. It's a bad D00M game no matter how you slice it.

Resident Evil5/6/7 becoming Gears of War, then despite sticking to more Resi mechanics jumped to FP persective with heavy sneaking sections. While I can still enjoy those games it's not really what fans wanted. With that despite FP view Resi7 is more faithful than 5-6. Remake 2 seems to be hitting the sweet spot Resi fans have only been able to find with The Evil Within games in recent years.

Tekken 7 is a cinematic dumbed down experience, they nerfed side stepping to make the added super moves more relevant, because super moves are generally designed for 2D Fighters and feel clunky in 3D Fighters, Harada san even admits to this. Tekken 7 is a bad Tekken game. Though on its own right an ok fighter, but as a Tekken fan I cannot enjoy it at all.

Sonic the Hedgehog, 2, 3 & Knuckles into Sonic Adventure 2 through Sonic 06. We have Sonic Mania now, but there's no telling whether SEGA will learn from it, for its 3D games to represent a proper evolution.

I still enjoyed the latest game but I'm definitely gonna have to say Final Fantasy. FFXV was cool but I really enjoyed FFXII: The Zodiac Age more tbh. They really need to get back to their roots but I doubt it'll happen because FFXV sold extremely well and was definitely dubbed a commercial success at least from a sales perspective. 8's across the board weren't exactly bad review scores either tbh

for me it was more 'because they never really added anything new'

so my answer would be The Sims. no point in going from Sims 2 to Sims 3 or 4

Ghost Recon - action series

Fear 2 - Simplified mechanics, rebooted story, checkpoints, enemies glow like light-bulbs

Bioshock - Simplified mechanics

Crysis 2 - Rebooted story, simplified mechanics, gimped graphics, complete change of tone

Phantasy Star 2 - No 3d environments, smaller environments, poison mechanic

Splinter Cell: Conviction - Simplified mechanics, designed for action, sped up action man gameplay

F.E.A.R. 2 is easily my biggest disappointing sequel in gaming history of all time from the horrible intrusive hud to the weak weapon design they look and sound like toys especially compared to the first game. They also got rid of lean which was a great mechanic. I hate the glowing enemies like you mention it totally ruins the slow mo effect. I don't know what the hell Monolith where thinking they also toned down the physics. F.E.A.R. 2 is the definition of a dumbed down game it's such a shame. I love the first game it's my favorite FPS of all time.

Crysis 2 is another huge disappointment what killed it for me was a couple of things but what really stands out is the weapon models they are to big and look ridiculous and where made for the size TV's and not monitors. Another thing is they got rid of the leaning mechanic and replaced it with a weak strafe. And finally what really ruined it for me is they took out maximum speed which made the first game so much fun.

Very good mentions in this thread, I'll echo some of them.

Crysis. First game was good, rest was utter dumbed down crap.
Battlefield. I too loved it in the BF2 and 2142 era. Then they decided to **** it all up by making it a larger CoD. And people seem to want the fucked up version more, so hoping for a new real Battlefield is sadly futile.
Dead Space. The first game is a masterpiece to me. Second game, while pretty good, didn't come close to the first as they went away from the horror aspect. 3rd game was utter action crap.
F.E.A.R. Again, first game was awesome. Rest is crap.
Quake. I was disspointed at the time that Q3 wasn't Quake but an arena shooter. But it was a great one, so it was cool. The 4th game though was just plain bad.
BioShock. First game was great, and I also really enjoyed the 2nd one. Infinite sucked so much balls I got angry. Shitty level design, shitty enemies, shitty story. Thank goodness I didn't pay for it.
Need for Speed. Last great game was Most Wanted from 2005. After that it's just been pure crap. Even the Most Wanted remake in 2012 didn't come close to the 2005 version.
Castlevania: Talk about butchering something awesome. Who asked for ugly 3D games? Where's the 2D awesomeness everyone wants and asks for? The series could be thriving right now, instead it's just an old memory while indies are filling the void, stealing the thunder.
Soul Calibur. After the first and 2nd game, the **** happened? Here's hoping they get it right with #6. lol
Batman: Arkham series (to an extent). I think Asylum is way better than the other ones. Being open is cool and all, but basically no dev knows how to make an open world not seriously repetitive, unless their name is Nintendo. Rocksteady was not an exception.
Diablo. First game was awesome when it came. Same with the 2nd. 3rd one looks cartoony, has simplified mechanics and skilltrees to alleviate the player from thinking, and is just an overall messy game. How the story is told is awful and the story itself sucks ass. D3 feels more like a fanmade Diablo game to me, a crappy game that Blizzard now have polished to a really polished turd. It's better now, but that's not saying much.

So many series have been dumbed down. It's a bit scary that people can't seem to play games anymore. The movie Idiocracy becoming a reality isn't that far-fetched.

Zelda - from limited open worlds, structured quests and a sense of accomplishment to...

pure open world, directionless, optional everything and no lasting rewards.
