Hi all! I'm looking for a recommendation for the best 360 RPG for me. Before we start, let me just say not Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, Fall Out, or similar games. I've played them, love them, etc., but now I'm looking for something a little more, well, RPG-ish. These are the ones I'm looking at:

1. Eternal Sonata

2. Tales of Vesperia

3. Star Ocean: Last Hope

4. Last Oddysey

5. One I'm missing?

What am I looking for? Mostly a REALLY GOOD STORY AND CHARACTERS. Second, not too much sludging through filler and/or grinding. The random battles get old now that I'm looking for more meat to a game for the time I spend on it. Now, if the story and characters are good enough, I would be willing to sludge/grind.

Anyway, so, which of these has the best story. I know Eternal Sonata is short, but that's not a negative to me at all - short is fine. Out of these games which has the best story? Which has the least filler between story elements, etc.?

Thanks!

Based off what you said and going by my favorites I'd say:

1. Tales of Vesperia- my favorite JRPG this gen so far, great characters, no random battles, story gets convoluted late, but a great adventure.

2. Eternal Sonata- good game but simpler combat, shorter game (like you said), beautiful environments, no random battles, good characters mostly.

3. Lost Odyssey- more of a traditional JRPG, random battles, more of a grind fest, still a good game.

I haven't played Star Ocean 4 yet so don't know about it other than it's coming to PS3 and might have better/extra features.

Thanks Bigboi500! So would you say the story and characters are better in Tales of Vesperia than in Eternal Sonata then?

My top 3 recommendations would be:

  • Lost Odyssey
  • Tales of Vesperia
  • Star Ocean: The Last Hope

All three are excellent RPG's.

Story might be a little better in ES but characters are much better in Vesperia imo. Both are beautiful games.

Eternal Sonata was my favorite of games played. I had Mass Effect, but didn't get enough into it to have an opinion.

Well you've played the best the systems have to offer and the ones closest to true RPG's Fable 2 would be the next best thing or you could wait a few months for Dragons Age Origins, Alpha Protocol or Mass Effect 2

Lost Odyssey is the only RPG you didn't list on the top for 360 and it's seems to have an awesome feel to it so far. Quite fun so far

Scratch Eternal Sonata off of your list. The only thing it's got going for it is cute looking characters. Tales of Vesperia is pretty good but I fell out with it. I figured out how the combat works and its almost as easy as Eternal Sonata. I was still enjoying it but then I just stopped playing it one day and i'm not sure why. From your list, I'd say Lost Odyssey. That game is all around great. If WRPGs count, I say play Mass Effect. To me it's like a JRPG except it's got space marines and shooter combat.

So many posters are just barking out responses and not even reading the OP. How can anyone help anyone when they don't even stop to listen first? :?

Tales of Vesperia is the best, followed by Eternal Sonata and Lost Odyssey. Have yet to play Star Ocean.

Well, even though Fable 2 isn't exactly a goldmine of character, but it's very fun. It could hold you over till FF XIII comes out, because it has a huge replay factor.
