For me after much debate between xenogears and tales of the abyss i have to say xenogears. The story was epic in scale religon, philosophy and mood swings how can you beat that?

If I had to pick one, it would be Persona 2: Innocent Sin. Although I like a lot of other ones too like Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, Final Fantasy VI, and Tales of Symphonia. It wouldn't really be fair for me to mention one that rises above all the rest since I like some of them for different reasons than why I would like another RPG.
God of War, if that counts. There doesn't seem to be any adequately specific definition of "RPG" to discount it. Otherwise, Golden Sun: The Lost AgeNBSRDan...Don't even try to say God of War is an RPG again, please. That game is a great action/adventure but not an RPG. Golden Sun: The Lost Age is an RPG, Baldur's Gate is an RPG, Final Fantasy is an RPG, Fallout is an RPG but God of War? It looks like you need to look up more definitions.
I actually think that game and its sequel are my least fave games from Bioware......its great, I like Jade Empire and Mass Effect so much better because they are original IPs not liscenced ones like Bioware did with Star Wars and D&D.kotor
KDIDDY78
Mass Effect,Morrowind,FF7,Kotor and Chrono Cross are my fav RPGs so far,DA origins will probably be added to my list soon.
hands down Final Fantasy VII
other good RPGs are pretty much every Final Fantasy game (maybe they exception being FFVII: DoC depending on if you see that as an RPG or a FPS or both lol and maybe FFXII:RW as that is more of a strategy game)
then theres the Suikoden games
the Atelier Iris games, Atelier Iris 2: The Azoth of Destiny was my favourite
Grandia (which is old but amazing)
some of the Dragon Quest games are really good,
Arc the Lad: twilight of the spirits (i enjoyed it)
The World Ends With You was amazing
Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross.
It just drags you in and completely consumes you with absolutely amazing character design, atmosphere, gameplay and settings.
(inb4 "have you even played..*insert game here*??" I do have played Xenogears, All FF, Persona etc etc but I just like CT and CC the most)
Wait, are we three pages into a 'best RPG thread' without anyone mentioning Planescape Torment? That must be a new record, or something. :P
Nothing beats KOTOR if you ask me. charming graphics, awesome story, deep RPG elements, lengthy campaign that never gets boring, great music, incredible voice casting, interesting characters, excellent ending, light-side and dark-side, entertaining mini-games[ like pazzak]. high replay value, great using of star wars license, etc. this is the game that every RPG gamer dream to have. it even beats a masterpiece like fallout.
Xenogears.

Someone else who has played Innocent Sin? :o I really need to get myself Eternal Punishment as well. For JRPGs I think I'm going to have to go with FFX although Golden Sun 1+2 were very good as well.
For WRPGs I think I'll say the best I've played is Morrowind with Fallout 3 being a very close second and KOTOR being in 3rd place.
