well DE1 is the best game i have ever played and its an RPG....so logic would dictate that DE1 would be my choice. .....but its not. i would go with the baldurs gate series. weird i know...crazy paradox and all that. :D
For their time, I'd go with either Wizardry 7 or the original Bard's Tale. Obviously, the technology doesn't compete with today's tech, but I really thought they were great games for their time.
