Nintendo Power magazine recently listed "Super Mario Galaxy" as the number one Mario game of all time. If you read my most recent review, I disagree! What *is* the greatest Mario game of all time? I guess it all boils down to personal opinion.:)

I'm torn between Super Mario 2 and 3....oh wait and Super Mario World...ahhh they're all so good!:?

BTW, my name is Chillo and i'm new to gamespot. I'd love some new friends!

Super Mario World will probably always be my favorite Mario. People make the argument that Super Mario Bros. 3 was a more original game, and that may be true, but to my tastes, Super Mario World just had much more charm. I love everything about the game!

More recently, I enjoyed Super Mario 3D Land a great deal. Before that, it had been several years since I'd been truly satisfied with a Mario game. :(

Super Mario World took whatever made SMB 3 great and multiplied it, so Super Mario World. Best 3d Mario's probably the Galaxy series, but they don't come up to SMW.

Of all the Mario games Super Mario World was the one I played fanatically as a kid and I still love playing it, so it has my vote.

My favorite Mario game is Super Mario World for 2D, Super Mario Galaxy 2 for 3D, and I also loved Sunshine for it's originality, even if I hated it for it's repetitiveness. (I look at you, red and blue coins :x)

Hmm, that's a good question honestly, I really enjoyed Galaxy and Sunshine but I think my favorite Mario game would have to be Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

I'd have to say the Paper Mario series, as the plot and characters in these games were both innovating and fresh. Many of the Mario RPGs in particular seem to have broader storylines, from what I've seen.

Super Mario Galaxy was also good in terms of graphics, gameplay, and an overall unique concept that was mixed with your generic Mario storyline (aka "Bowser kidnaps Peach... but this time, in space"). I also loved the scenery throughout and the creative boss battles. Both Galaxy installments seemed to be successful due to this.

I also like the New Super Mario Bros. franchise, in part because they're fun, entertaining, and great multiplayer. :)

I tend to like Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 the best.

To me SBW had by more interesting Level-Designs, Secrets and Enemy-Types than Super Mario Bros 3. It played alot like a more lavish and polished SMB3.

About M64 i liked its sense for movement, exploration, freedom and secrets, as well as its challenging Level-Design. By not automating every skill, motion und movement you can do, it does alot things well, other 3D-Games don't.

Really loved SMW and Super Mario 64.

Super Mario World really perfected on SMB3 in my opinion added a larger explorable world more secrets and added a little bit more challenge.

Plus you get to ride yoshi and thats cool

Super Mario 64 perfected the 3D platforming game, again with the secret stars, smooth controls an interactive castle, mini bosses, I often find myself messing around in the castle than playing the game. And it can keep you playing for years trying to collect all stars.

Definately Super Mario Bros 3 for me. I love Super Mario World, but believe it or not I prefer the NES Mario graphics to SNES Mario, and the gameplay is more challenging. I love all the Mario games, but the one that annoys me the most is Super Mario 64. And it's a great game, a masterpiece, but the camera angles in it are just the most frustrating thing ever. That's the case for most 3D platformers of that time. At the time when it came out, I was so up-in-arms about it, I never noticed what a hassle the camera angles are until 15 years later. It's one thing about 3D games that had yet to be perfected, and nowadays makes it very frustrating to play, when ur jumping to another platform and suddenly fall down a pit into some area u can't see, cuz the camera won't reach, and u move the toggle stick and u fall off an edge. The game is genius, but that one element annoys the shit outta me.

Easily Super Mario Galaxy.  That game just had such great level design, memorable locations, fantastic gameplay, and the element of worldbuilding (by that I mean improving the hubworld and stuff like that, which really makes you care about the objective, not minecraft worldbuilding) with what's at stake surpasses all the others.  It also has a ton of spirit put into it, which is why I like it more than smg2.  I like world and 3 for what they are, but objectively, Mario Galaxy is just so much better.

Top 5 1. Super Mario Bros 3 (Holds a special place in my heart and is challenging if you don't whistle your way through it) 2. Super Mario Galaxy (1 & 2 because they are essentially the same beast...and amazing) 3. Super Mario 3D Land (Though well reviewed, I thought it was still underrated: IMHO, the true sequel to Mario Bros 3.) 4. Super Mario Bros 2 (That princess floats! The first time I dodged all those white monster things after taking the rocket ship up to that ice platform was one of the greatest moments of my childhood; plus SMB2 is tied with Sunshine for being the most unique in the series. 5. Both incarnations of Yoshi's Island (Maybe not really in the same vein as the rest, but you can shoot unhatched eggs at bad guys; levels are expertly crafted) Why Mario 64 is not on the list: Many consider this the best because of their fond memories of it. However, after playing Galaxy or 3D land, the controls on M64 are almost unbearably clunky and non-intuitive, the environments are fairly bland, and it just doesn't hold up that great over time. So shoot me.

On a side note, I'm really diggin the New Super Mario Bros 2 game. It definefaly has that classic Mario feel to it.

[QUOTE="drockus"]Top 5 3. Super Mario 3D Land (Though well reviewed, I thought it was still underrated: IMHO, the true sequel to Mario Bros 3.)

I thought so too until I play New Super Mario Bros. 2. It felt more like a true sequal to SMB3...ever played it?
