What is the ultimate racing game to own for either PS3 or 360?

I'm trying to get into a racing game, hopefully a newer one, but quality matters more!

What should I get if you had to choose one on either platform!

That's exactly what's so great about it. Midnight Club invented open-world racing and it's the only series that actually utilizes the open-world design. If you want closed-off tracks there's plenty of other games to choose from.

GT5, Forza, F1 2010 (11-12), F1:CE all good racing games.
