I'll be the first not to say The Last Of Us then. Fire Emblem takes it for now. I've put very little time into GTA 5 so my mind can change.

I would say Papers please should be made GOTY
Because for a concept that screams "boring go away" it was a great game that for some strange reason was addicting as .... also the moral choices in the game was really choices and not just something put in like in most AAA games.
But i know that won't happen and the title will go to either GTA V, TLOU or Bioshock.
The game that had the most "soul" in it : The Last of Us. GTAV is probably the better game in terms of gameplay variety and lasting appeal but it just didn't grab me the way TLOU did.
For me it's The Last of Us. I don't know who determines "Game of the Year" or if it's just something a bunch of gaming sites do (I clearly don't pay attention every year when this goes on) but I can never figure out why people go crazy over it. It's obviously opinionated, and having one game win over another doesn't make that game any "better", but I guess this is no different than any sort of awards show, and I should just sit back and not care too much about it.
Honestly, it's been a shit year. Next year will be 100x better.
If I had to give it to something it might be Mario 3D world, or AC4.
my favorite games of the year were brothers: a tale of two sons and gone home.
if i had to pick one, it would probably be brothers. i wrote a user review for it, but i don't even know where to start for summing up what it did right for a forum post. the first 90% of the game is great in and of itself, but then that ending comes and it gets even better as you realize just how much of the mechanics and puzzles were a setup for something even more.
Leaning toward Rayman Legends right now (it's so good), but I don't know. Need to think on it some more.

It should get some nominations at the very least. If not, then something has gone seriously wrong.
Until a few months ago I was thinking Antichamber should get it, but I don't know, there have been heaps of great games this year.
Still, I guess I have to be the first to mention Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. I could see it being in the top three of the year, it's that good. And from the sounds of things, Mario 3D World should be up there as well
Well the top 5 games that I played and completed this year are: Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, The Last of Us, and Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and Guacamelee.
I thought Bioshock had the best story, Tomb Raider had the best game play (other than the quick time events), The Last of Us had the most attention to detail I have ever seen in a game, the new Zelda is definitely one of the top 3 Zelda games, and Guacamelee is the best Metroidvania game that is not Metroid or Castlevania.
Still debating which of these 5 will take my game of the year. Also, I am waiting on GT6.

TLOU touched me in strange places too.
To me it probably stands between The Last of Us, BioShock: Infinite and GTA V. If I absolutely had to choose between those, I guess I at the moment would go for The Last of Us. Unfortunately, I haven't beaten GTA V yet, but I'm not really expecting it to, well, move me like The Last of Us did.
I imagine The Last Of Us will probably do really well, However if i had my choice I would say the game that I played the most was Metal Gear Rising Revengance

GTA V
Those sales numbers and the sheer magnitude of the game on a last gen console is amazing. even tho the story is bland and the main characters are easy to forget, the game itself is excellent for a current gen.
TLOU and Bioshock Infinite both suffers for being done so many times tho in some variation and are simply not enough improvement over their counterparts that they can be made goty.
@Jacanuk: i think GTA had an amazing gameplay and i totally agree with you on the bland story and forgettable characters. that the only reason i just cant go to GTA for some reason, i would say if GTA 5 had a vice city or san andreas kinda story i wouldn't mind it being GOTY. but with characters and stories that bioschock and TLOU presents i cant give the award to GTA.
The Last of Us, certainly.
However, Rayman Legends, Puppeteer, Dragon's Crown, GTAV, Bioshock Infinite, and so many others deserve recognition.
@ Jacanuk
How is more of what we had in Arkham Asylum and City, which were both GOTY Winners mind you, make Origins not a contender ? Especially to that sorry excuse of a shooter Bioshock Infinite.
Because more of the same is not good enough.
Look at Assassin's creed, Black Flag is as far away from anything remotely AC you can get, but its a absolute joy and it took some interesting turns in a new direction
@ Jacanuk
Theres a difference, Assassin's Creed is good and left plenty room for improvement, Batman was Excellent, Rockstaedy couldn't do any better than WBM did. A wise man once said "If it aint broke.... Milk It !"
I kinda disagree Rocksteady have made 2 great Batman games but they could still improve on the game, a few places, the travel, character design, combat, "openworld" mechanics, story (which in AC was baaaaad and thinner than a cup of one dip tea)
Dead Rising 3
Hello new friend. :)
I know it's not a perfect game, nor has any of the Dead Rising games been objectively "great", but for me they are amazing wonderlands of zombicide and I enjoy each and every one of them like it was a holiday. I'd never even try to nominate it, rather I accept that I fall into the niche that Dead Rising happens to appeal to the most, but as far as personal GotY lists go that one is taking top honors from me.
So far I'd say the best game I played this year remains Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. I feel genuinely aggravated by it at times, as I do many fighting games, but I'd have to say Killer Instinct is definitely in the running as well. (really conflicted on that one, and with fighters in general I still have one foot in the door at best)
