I seen tons of coverage from media sites and every other Twitch stream is about Destiny. I know it's been out for a couple years. And I know it's a shooter game. But that's all.

But what the heck is it about ? And more importantly, why do gamers like it so much despite most thinking it's a piece of crap?

Who's most?

Anyway, I don't know. I haven't played it. I guess so many people dislike it, because it doesn't appear to fit neatly into a specific genre. People expecting a shooter will be disappointed, people expecting an MMOG will be disappointed, people expecting an RPG will be disappointed. Lack of proper story is another complaint I see a lot. And there also seems to be a lot of grinding involved, which many consider cheap and boring.

But some people love the grind, some people don't care about story, some people are part of a group of friends who regularly play (which is arguably needed if you really want to enjoy the game). If you look at Gamespot's Erick Tay, who likes the game, maybe it'll shed light on what kind of people like Destiny. Tay likes competitive shooters, he doesn't seem to care even a tiny bit about story/lore, he also likes the loot grind (I remember him playing a lot of Diablo 3) and he likes MMORPG's and ARPG's (and also MOBA's, I believe). This is just from what I've seen him play and heard him say, it's not necessarily a complete picture.

Destiny seems to emphasize the stat and loot grind of ARPGS and MMORPG's in a competitive shooter format with a social element added to it. That's just an limited outside view, though. Again, I haven't actually played it.

From what I've seen it's an MMO esque shooter with looting elements, like Diablo. Personally, the game doesn't appeal to me.

@dwispa: I played destiny and the reason why a lot of gamers dont like it is because its overrated, it has very good shooting mechanics but thats about it the story sucks its very repetitive and you will get bored very quickly.

Lol, Destiny is not overrated. Gamespot gave it a 6 when it came out. Its a game that tries to do many things and fails at almost all of them.

It's just the typical vocal minority who thinks that the game is 'crap', same thing with the Call of Duty games and about a dozen or so more popular games I could mention. Some people just can't help themselves but to constantly berate something just because they don't like it especially when that something is popular with a lot of other people. They want to feel that their opinion is somehow the 'correct' one and the only one that matters. The people who enjoy these games are typically too busy playing them then to spend time in petty online spats.

It's a fun shooter that just had a rocky launch. Even without buying the expansion, there is plenty to do.

@dwispa: Destiny is an odd title in that there are many different ways you can enjoy the game. For some it is the co-op aspect of PVE, doing strikes, collecting loot, playing side by side with friends. For a large portion of those players, the raids are the biggest draw, they give the best loot, and require the most team work. Six players solving a giant puzzle together in a sense. For many others it is the PVP experience that they enjoy the most. The game shares many features with the Halo series Bungie is more known for, and gameplay feels very similar to those Halo games, which makes for one of the better online PVP shooters on the market.

For someone who hasn't played Destiny yet, The Taken King is a good place to start, much of what original Destiny players complained about has been addressed by now, the game is more balanced than ever, and the story makes a little more sense this time. But for the most part you end up getting what I feel is the complete "Destiny" game for $60, while I ended up paying over $140 for it(really paid even more since I have it on both consoles).

@Archangel3371: For some of us, it had more to do with the fact we could see the product was unfinished and that content was removed prior to release, plus the cost to get the full game. We basically paid $100 to beta test Destiny 1.0 while they finished the game and released it as Destiny 2.0.

So what exactly is the story about? It's just funny that even though there are many other games I haven't played, I basically understand the gist and storyline to them. But for the last two years, despite being inundated with coverage about Destiny, I know nothing about the storyline. With all the money they spend on these commercials, I still don't know what the game is about. LOL.

All of us here know about opinions and what they are like. Good or bad, this game has its share of them all. As a gamer I'm not one to repurchase a specific game. If I do, there must be something about it. Back when the game released I bought it at a cheap price when one of the B&M stores had a sale. Once I hit level 20 I decided to unload it and make a few dollars. A few months went buy and I bought it again during a sale and I was at the point where the only way to increase in level was to obtain high quality gear with light. I made it up to 28 and sold it for a bit of a profit mainly because my backlog was growing. Maybe the third time is a charm as I bought the Legendary Edition this past weekend. After downloading a big update I started playing and it feels like a solid game with ample content. Compared to the last time I played it now has new strikes, a new social hub, obviously a new story, etc.., It actually feels fun now.

Hmmm... Destiny was somewhat of a disaster (launch wise). It showed a lot of potential in it's pre-release, but it turned out to be a mediocre Online FPS Shooter with some RPG elements to it. It fell flat, because it was over hyped by people and the expectations got through the roof. It wanted to be somehow borderlands just with events and the MMO component paired with futuristic elements. There were some nasty bugs too. We all know what happens, when something gets over hyped and doesn't meet peoples expectations: Joy is being transformed to hate. After my opinion the game isn't bad, but it doesn't really set itself apart from other Free2Play shooter games. It isn't simply that good.

BTW: Bad internal business decisions and insults towards their own community from the developer itself made the game look even worse :/.

I forgot I owned it, which says a lot about it to be honest. I never brought any expansions to it and did 2 raids, felt like the rest was going to be more of the same.

You shoot things with a gun, then you have another gun you can shoot things with if you get bored of shooting things with the first, but you kind of have infinite ammo because it drops all over the place and is more common then grass. You have got a heavy weapon, which is either a decent rocket launcher or a heavy machine gun that can't hit crap as and is less effective at killing then your standard weapons so it's kind of junk. Then you get one single measly power to use every known and then. The powers are fun and the best bit about destiny, it upgrades over time and the Warlocks can be jawdropping, except you only get the one power, so it's like boarderlands in that sense. Some players feel compelled to get their guns to hit as high a damage number as possible, others find it boring as hell.

The game does create a very out worldly sci-fi feel to it which I appreciate. I like that sense of weirdness, where you feel part of the world even though you don't understand what's going on. It has lots of lore but it's very vague, but it does depend on how much you focus on it. It sets the scene and it reminds me of a Prometheus.

P.S - It's shotguns annoy the hell out of me. They have an effective range of about 6 meters, these are suppose to be high tech shotguns, I've blown clay pigeons with a chocked shotgun at a distance of 150 meter. I hate it when games make melee shotguns!

There's no campaign in Destiny, just little bites of do this that, there's no story other then the game itself telling you about the darkness which doesn't fully explain it. Destiny is using the mechanics from Halo games since this is Bungie who made Halo what it is today. I'm not surprise you're not following Destiny since it's not on PC. I been playing Destiny since launch but the game wasn't good as promise what Bungie told us, the only 2 things that I enjoy about it is the class abilities and gameplay. That's it. I'm not saying the game isn't flawed, I'm saying I got out of a $60 dollar game what I felt I should have gotten, and I don't regret buying the game. Even if the game wasn't worth the price, what I got out of it was. That said, I'll just post this video review from Angry Joe who can explain it better what Destiny pros/cons.

Destiny has a very good and polished fps mechanics, and that's where it ends

Rocket league has a better story, however
