When I first laid eyes on the Pillar of Autumn and jump out of the cryo chamber as the Master Chief, I new Halo was going to be special. Halo: Combat Evolved is my #1 game of all-time and is the reason why I own an Xbox to this very day. I am totally ashamed of myself for not owning Anniversary =/...

Although I've been playing games since the early eighties, I'd have to say Super Metroid. It was the first game that was so immersive and atmospheric in every way, as cliche as it is to say, it really was more like an experience than a game. And it's still infinitely replayable today.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

killerband55

yes. exactly. this, or in my case, if i put myself foward from then, to about 5 more years later... Metroid Prime.

out of the 3D realm... that'd be my choice. Metroid Prime changed everything that i thought a classic game could be, and i don't think has been topped.

Metal Gear Solid and Zelda OOT. Those 2 games set the precedent for many games to follow.

Bioshock. Never have I witnessed such a masterful narrative that is equally chilling, clever and memorable, which eventually leads to an unforgettable twist, in a video game before. I was stunned by how awesome the art design, the setting, the concepts, and the gameplay wove wonderfully into the experience to create something truly special. Sensational game!

First game I ever spent money on was called Auto Duel.

At the time it was the best game I had ever played.

More recently I was very impressed with Skyrim, and think it's the best game ever made.

Okami There was just something absolutely magical about that game, something that makes it truly stand out above the rest (even now it still does stand out for me).

I know I may get some flaq for this....but in terms of sheer excitement and hours put into it - World of Warcraft 1-60 vanilla, the original game. I recall looking at the world map for the first time and thinking to myself holy ***t... That, and Ocarina of Time.

Final Fantasy VII.

Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid and Halflife also blew my mind when I first played them, but FFVII was the first game I played that really stood out over anything I'd ever played before, across all genres.

Ultima 7. This was the very first game I bought for my 386 pc when I got it (back in 1991 or 1992 I think), I got the game strickly off the nice graphics on the box (for its time that is) but the game obviously was much deeper then just the graphics as it turned out...

Haven't been many games since then that sucked me in so much... hopefully it'll happen again someday.

Having been gaming for 20 years now... and my memory being sh!tty as always, I doubt I could come up with a good answer. I didn't really start thinking "best game ever" until I started posting on this site really. Every game I played before that was just "enjoyable".

SkinnyJeans1995

I just played Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy for the first time recently. Found it much more enjoyable than Jak II which I have been playing So far it seems that Jak II will end up being the least enjoyable of the series. Plus my favourite game that I have played through is Uncharted 3 Drake's Deception. I will never understand why people place it so low compared to UC1 and UC2.

I definitely like Uncharted 3 better than the first, but not as much as the 2nd

Probably Super Smash Brothers, I remember playing that all night at a kids house the first time I played it. I also remember being obsessed with Crash Team Racing for a few months back in 2nd or 3rd grade.

My first best game ever had to be Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction. I remember growing my Paladin and gathering loot, leveling up on my first ever skill tree, and mowing down hordes of enemies. Of course, I didn't own the game, I only played it at the local PC arcade. The first best ever game I actually owned was Mercenaries 2- and the moment I decided that was when I leveled my first skyscraper.

I was pretty sure the open beta was PC only, and as such, I haven't got access to it. Regardless, I will buy the game at or near launch day.

For me it was X-Wing vs TIE Figther. That multiplayer in 1997.... good stuff.

Other contenders include MoH Allied Assualt, Sim City 4, and Battlefield 1942 and 2142.

It's the best survival horror I've ever played... Of course it's a good choice. I miss the good ol' ink ribbons. There was a time when SURVIVAL actually meant carefully concerving your supplies and meticulously planning out every little move you make.

Don't have a PC capable of running it? Only a few weeks away, pointless to pick DIII up unless it's in the mail.
