it was a very bold risk. And the analog stick leaked vaseline or something.

I've always liked the n64 controller. If you hold it correctly it's perfect (some people try to hold it with their left hand on the outer prong for some reason)

I never had a problem with the N64 controller. I think people just like to say it's bad because the d-pad, and L button were pretty obsolete.

i find it quite akward to hold. nobody is three handed and the left handed people (such as myself) are at a disadvantage. the controller isnt comfortable when you dont use the middle. the dpad is quite stiff and the L button is rarely used. its R and Z. WTF were they thinking! and i also find the up and right c buttons hard to reach in a timely matter

Apart from how the joystick became powdery and stiff, it was perfect.

Only problem I had was the fact the stick would get so worn and hard to use, and it'd make blisters on my thumb.

I think it is pretty well in line with other Nintendo products. It works perfectly on 1st party games designed for it, but it could get pretty akward on some titles. I remember some games using the d-pad and the analog at times, and that was rather annoying. Overall it's not THAT bad though.

I liked it when I used my N64 before I got other consoles. Then when I started using the XBox, the N64 controller got really bad. The Xbox controller is pretty near perfect for me, and the N64 feels much worse now.

I quite enjoy the N64 controller and find it easy to use, although I do have rather large hands, which is why I also thought the xbox/360 controllers are decent.

A brand new n64 controller is perfectly fine. However, that analogue stick wears out like a sucker especially if Mario Party is the order of the day. If it wasn't for that horrid analogue stick then I'd have no issues with the controller.

the N64 controller wasnt "bad", it just wasnt very comfrotable, maybe it was the strange shape, but when a controller is good, I eventually forget Im even holding a controller, but with the N64 controller, I could always notice it was there

This was the first wide spread controller to have an analog. So all of people saying "horrid analog" can realize that without it, no dual shock, no xbox controller, no 360 controller, no GCN controller.

I've seen that people who own and regularly play the N64 have no problem with it and enjoy the N64 controller. However if they haven't used it in a long time or dont own a N64 they find it difficult and aggravating to use. I still have mine and after 11 years its only just starting to get worn and the control stick is just starting to get stiff. I still use my N64 and in my opinion is equal with PS1 for being the best consoles of the last 15 years. Sure Xbox and the new models of PS and Nintendo are good but N64 and PS1 have so many classic, memorable games which started hugely popularseries which carryon to this day(Banjo Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot).

ANYWAY i better not stroll to far away from the topic of this discussion...

N64 controller is overrall something you either hate or love. At least with it, it lasts a long time and DEFINITELY gets you your value for money!!!!

The analog stick. Even third party controllers were of better quality.

It's not like there wasn't analog controllers before the Nintendo came along. It would have only been a matter of time before another company picked up analog control and put it in a gamepad. The original dualshock made the N64's controller look outdated; it was decent considering it was the first to market but the analog stick was poor quality (don't last well), it was big but at the same time slightly crampt because of the useless three-pronged design and it was made more bulky by the addition of the rumble pak (which Sony integrated into their controller).

The best controller for the N64 in my opinion is the Interact Makopad/Superpad 64, which have two handles so you can reach the d-pad and L button without changing your grip and an analoge stick that's comfortable to use and doesn't wear out. But the overall feel and quality of the plastic and buttons aren't upto the official controller's standard.

I thought the D-pad wasn't really necessary(I only remember using it for 3 or 4 games...=/), and it's a bit hard for me to hold it now(Big hands...XD), but otherwise I loved the controller. =)

I used it when I was quite young and I literally never actually noticed that it was unusual, but when i use it now my hands feel all out of place and I sometimes think that the Japanese just over-estimated human evolution and that we would have three hands by the time it came out :p. I do really like it though. I always thought that the GameCube one was a bit of a shambles, because there a just buttons sprawled randomly, but I never played the first party games like Sunshine or Wind Waker, which I'm assuming it was desgined for.

My only complaint about it was no padding on the thumbstick. Because of that I remember tearing large amounts of skin off my palm while playing Mario Party. That and I could never find a decent third party controller. All 3 of my third party controllers died on me. One the L button got stuck which I could have fixed if I was older and knew more. Number 2 the entire thing kind of shorted out and only 3 buttons were usable. Number 3 the thumbstick was programmed backwards or something. I just know that down was up left was right and up was nothing.

nintendofan897

I remember someone on the GBA and GC boards always used to say stuff like that...

Anyways, there's a reason that there haven't been any more controllers like the N64. It just wasn't practical to have 3 handles with an analog stick in the center. Nintendo knew this, that's why they went back to a more traditional controller with the Cube.

its actually quite comfortable. you just need your right hand on the right where a and b are and left either on joystick or dpad Varies by game

Now that I think about it, that was probably my least favorite thing about the 64, the controller. It was just so odd and bizarre looking and awkward to hold. The analog stick wasn't much better either.

It's awkward, bulky, and you should have to hold the controller in different ways depending on whether or not you're using the analogue or not. Considering the fact that most games on the N64 were analog, it rendered the L button useless. The Dualshock was just a much better controller at the time, especially because you only had to hold it one way.

There you go. Nintendo was still using a pad in the SNES era, and the SEGA Saturn followed with a pad as well. Nintendo's 3 prong idea seems to have come from the 2 prong PS1 controller ... and a bad idea.

It was really awkward. It was uncomfortable and awkward when you held it by the middle rong, but hard to reach the analogue stick when you held it by the left one. The stick also wore out fairl quickly

It's a "marmite" situation. either love it or hate it. I hate it. it never did fit in my hands as well as nintendo would have me believe it was ergonomically designed... The GC and PS and 360 pads are all much better. It wasn't the only or first widespread analogue controller around at the time either. People forget the Saturn 3-d controller for NiGHTS came out around the same time... and aside from a plastic thumb stick that would burn holes in your thumb tip after playing extended sessions of NiGHTS or Sega Rally, was a much more comfortable pad than the N64's. It was also the precursor to the DC pad. widely regarded as one of the best pads ever made.

Any way. It's not that i don't like the pad... and certain games used it very well, Goldeneye,OOT and such. it's just it should have been less different to other more comfortable pads...playing OOT on a GC controller for instance is a much more comfortable affair!

When I was younger, holding the controller by the central extension was actually quite comfortable. Now, after having used the Xbox controller for years, the N64 is not nearly as comfortable. Also, I used pretty much one controller for four years of N64 gaming and never had a problem with the analog stick.

No, there's nothing wrong with the N64 controller. Even though I prefer the PS1 controller, I also like the N64 controller. The Xbox controller though, that a clumsy controller!
