I'm a guy, and when I play through an RPG, I play as a guy. It never even occurs to me to play as a female. The only RPG I can think of that I've ever played as a chick was Sacred, where I wanted to be the angel character, and they only came in girl versions.

So, my question to everybody else is, do you usually play your own gender in an RPG? If not, then why?

(Reading a post in a recent, similar thread inspired this topic. )

I pretty much do the same thing. In RPGs where you get to create the main character, i typically make a male.

On 2nd play throughs though, I'll make a female character from time to time, especially when trying different builds, such as Oblivion or KoToR... mainly as an attempt to create a slightly different playing experience.

For me, it's partly out of laziness too, it's way quicker / easier to make a "bad ass" looking male character than it is to make a "hot" female char. Especially on a 1st time playing through the game, when moving on to actual gameplay is more important than character creation.

I play as female, I was born male despite not feeling male, why would I want to spend my time when I game being male? It's bad enough being physicallymale from birth without having to be them in games all the time if there's a choice not to be. I'm only male in games if they don't allow the choice to be female.

Content to be true to myself instead of to what others expect me to be.

I am Male. Most RPG characters I play the same. Some games don't give any choice, though. One reason I would make a female is if I knew the game to be 'stacked'(pun!) in a female character's favor. Or if I was really drunk and wanted to perv cause of the rendering being 'easy on the eyes'.... :O

Aslong as the story and gameplay is good I don't care. But when they tell me to create a character I usually choose male....Unless it is like Oblivion where you could choose an animal/beast type character...Oblivion=Me being Kajiit all the way.

I much prefer to play as a female. Female characters just interest me a whole lot more than male characters. I like picking females in all games really.

Girls are prettier to look at than men so in bioware games where women 3D models are fantastic (wu the lotus blossom, anyone?) I go for a girl character, while in bethesda games, where women look worse, I settle for a guy.

The only RPG I have ever played as a female is Fable 2, and that is only because I carelessly drank that wretched potion... :P It's funny though, because I almost always play characters completely opposite to my own (if there are moral choices involved in the game) but I have never played as the opposite sex. I guess it somehow limits the immersion of the experience for me.

i'm male, but i play as females in games. i find them generally more interesting, prettier, and they are often the adequete expression for me in virtual worlds.

i really don't identify with a hulking mass of muscles. if i have another choice i try to make a mix between a female and male look.

sometimes though, for gratuitousness, i play as a 'GRRR! HULK' type character. ;p

I'm normally a guy but if they say ones canon then I try to stay in the storyline. I believe the KOTOR storyline says the canon way to go is having Revan a guy and the Exile in KOTOR 2 a girl so I wanted to dive into KOTOR 2 and give that another go as a girl.

I think NWN is the only RPG where I ever played as a female when i didn't have to. I created so many different characters for the game so that when I decided to try out a druid, it was female.

I dunno... I tend to think most of the time that the game is designed to assume you pick a dude, and if it isn't, there is usually no difference besides the voices. Even in Mass Effect, instead of giving the lady a chance to hook up with a nice alien man, they instead make being a lesbian the only choice. Even in Fable, the difference is mostly superficial as everybody treats you the same.

I'm a dude and I create female characters when I play games because I like looking at females.

Online RPG is different story though... Too creepy to play as female character in online RPG.

I play both, a character is a character, guy or girl. I think most people perception is off when they play games and see the character as a representation of themselves within the world rather than a character within the world. Just as if it was a character in a movie, I do not see it as a representation of myself but an icon within the world that I simply guide around the world.

It also have to do with creativity and having an open mind. Some people can't get past the idea of what a hero should be like so they enjoy the generic looking hero that was always presented to them. That is one of the reason you see so much good guys getting the ladies, rude psychopath killers devoid of any common sense or hot chicks who kick butts and display massive cleavage running around. They are simply the first thing that come to their minds. You could ask the same question about playing anything else than a human, why do you play as an orc or a dwarf for example?

One of my friend used to ask the same question when we were in our teens, he used to play as a guy and as I said, perceived it as an avatar of himself. Me on the other hand, I was playing a wide range of characters but I always been the creative type. Then we grew up, he started getting interested in cinema, started writing, developed his creativity and opened himself to new ideas. Just to say, he now play a wide range of characters and in some occasions even encouraged others to pick the unusual character or create a lady rather than a guy.

Like the poster above said, I'll play either. Usually I'll play a male; being a male, I can relate to the character I'm creating better. I'll want to try out other dialog options avilable to female characters eventually though.

Sometimes I feel like if I'm gonna be looking at a 3d rendering of someones backside for possibly hours on end, I'd prefer it to be in the impression of a female. That's only when I'm feeling extremely shallow though.

I'm male and I generally pick a female character if given the option and she looks cool. If I'm going to stare at the digital rear end of some stranger for an hour or so its much easier on the eyes than a man's ass.

Female :D Like someone said earlier the guys are so big and bulky, and being a female, when i play them it feels awkward. I guess what I am trying to say is, unlike real life, I would rather stare at a girl then a guy.

im a gender neutral etherial being :P nah seriously im a guy. i switch between both genders in RPGs though. in guild wars i have 4 lads and 4 lasses. i usually decide on armour appearance preference when choosing my gender in that game. eg female mesmer armour looks much better than male. one oddilty though is that i cant play dungeon siege as a male. always female for some reason. it just seems wrong somehow playing it as a male. weird i know.
