I'm certainly no T.V fan, but last night after putting some hours into 'Fallout Vegas' whilst watching T.V for half an hour before getting ready for bed, I came accross two live action advertisments for games.. One for 'Battlefield 3' the other for 'Skyrim'..

Personally I find these advertismentsa little annoying to be honest, due to the fact that I've always felt that game advertisments should onlyreally consist of actualy gameplay ect(and certainly not high spec P.C gameplay when advertising consoles).. giving gamers a taste of what to expect when purchasing the actual game..

It seems that the trend at present is to advertise games with 'C.G.I infused' movie themed live action sequences, which to me seems wrong.. Firstly it's kind of false advertising, and secondly,I don't want my games to look like movies in any way, shape or form!

I was just wondering what other gamers thought of these expensive 'movie like' advertisments which include lavish special effects, and bad actors..

Do you prefer these type of advertisments, or like me, do you feel these type of advertisments should be left for movies?

Fine, advertiseyour games, but stop building them up to be something that they arn't..

Personally I love gaming due to the fact that they are totally unique, and that includes the lookand feel of the game..

If I want something to resemble a movie, I'll watch a movie!

All I know is that the ad for Skyrim looked like some kind of laughable cringeworthy B-movie.

They're nice, but why waste several hundred grands on them when CGI is cheaper, prettier and more versatile?

Although they look cool, they're definitely misleading and I don't see the point of advertising a 'game' when it's clearly not the game. I watched one advertising string which had MW3, Assassins Creed, Skyrim and Uncharted 3. The one advert I was most impressed with was Uncharted 3- it was equally polished in presentation but had the added bonus of displaying content you would actually GET. Any advert which doesn't show gameplay tells me that that the devs aren't proud enough to let the game speak for itself. That they're scared of the gameplay appearing 'boring' to the masses,,,,

I think like most adverts its a case of there's some good and some bad. The point of them though is i think to advertise the story and probably aren't necessarilyaimed at hardcore gamers but more towards casual gamers (and i mean casual gamersnot people who play farmville and are suddenly gamers) for who the story is often as or more important than graphics or even gameplay when deciding whether to buy a game or not. just imo anyway

You have to think of the demographic. You said "they should show gamers gameplay instead of live action" but they aren't intending to show "gamers" anything. The general demographic that the advertisement is trying to catch, are not gamers. They are people who watch TV. They already have "gamers" buying their game, they do enough of their smart advertising on the internet (Like GameSpot for example) because we are gamers, and we know what we want to see. Once you realize who the demographic and advertisement is aiming for, it all really makes a lot more sense. They are trying to sell a product to people who don't really game that much and who may be on the fence about the game. That doesn't make live action ads any more right, it just makes sense why they are doing them.

Terrible. TV advertisements are basely solely on consoles (most of the times)

Here in Portugal it's always about Playstation, today I've seen BF3 and Uncharted 3 advertisements on TV a bunch of times. It screws my head, since I'm a pc gamer and the freaking marketing just ignores us. Oh well, I'll just be playing BF3 on my 60fps and stunning graphics.

(no flame wars, i'm out of here)

I think they are cool if well done. They are trying to appeal to people a bit more naive to gaming whom buy games for the cinematic experience alone.

On the topic of advertisements, generally the Tv ones are terrible. THe Batman Arkham Asylum was pitful, especially with catwoman. My dad was laughing at how stupid her lines were. He did like the Joker though.

Also, once a Heavy Rain Tv spot was on. God it was painful watching it with the family, when he said "everything I do, I do for love"

I think in almost all cases the best trailers contain all in-game footage. However, all those Halo live action trailers are quite breathtaking.
