Before you think this is a flame bait thread, its not. it is my opinion that pokemon is now nothing more than rehashment. That series can go into the dump of gaming history.

I liked Diamond and Pearl, thought it was a definite improvement over Ruby/Sapphire. And now that HeartGold/SoulSilver are around the corner, I'm ecstatic. If you don't like the games, don't buy them. The series needn't stop for just that.
It's been over ten years, no? Before pokemon, how long did the last child craze last? I think feeding the pokemon machine, even if the games are fun for the core audience, is just keeping new and exciting things from coming out. That sounds harsh, but when a company knows they have a sure fire hit on their hands, they'll stick with it until people eventually stop buying it. Extreme pokemon fans remind me of a scenerio from the HBO show The Wire, Season 3.

That's true, in a sense, but Game Freak is the company making it, not Nintendo. Pokemon has really become GF's forte, and it doesn't hinder Nintendo in the slightest. If GF wants to keep on making the games, then that really doesn't have any influence on anything but GF itself.

Quite a few popular, long lived series haven't changed appreciably over the years. Why single out Pokemon? If you're bored by it (I never was a fan) just ignore it.
I like the games personally. I'm just tired of the whole "buy three games and import from the three older versions just to get all 4 zillion pokemon we've come up with" idea. I'd like to see a fully realized Wii (or even DS)RPG pokemon game in which you have a huge chunk of land to explore and you can actually catch all pokemon in THE SAME GAME! I know, it's a novel idea but I like to think outside the box. Realistically, who trades pokemon with anyone but themselves and who took advantage of the global ttraining center in the last games? Not many.
I was just trading Pokemon last night O___O
I think they're still fun, I bought Platinum not too long ago and it gave me a reason to pull out my DS phat again.
I'd kill off yearly Call of Duty's (even if they're alternating devlopers) far before I killed off Pokemon.

:D I didn't realize that, so I suppose you are also right, in a sense. However, with that said--myself not even knowing they weren't nintendo games--they are almost branded as the nintendo rpg. Really, you have mario, zelda, metroid, and smash bros--pokemon is so popular and exclusively nintendo that it fits in with that group. Now, Pokemon brings in LOADS of cash for nintendo, just look at the amount of merchandise surrounding the franchise, and this flagship status the series has acquired also requires a massive marketing push. If nintendo were to release a similar game, and push it as the "you kids got to have it" title--and the game was good--it would eventually lead to pokemon fading away. From a business standpoint, it doesn't make sense to do such a thing, and so ten years down the line it seems pretty obvious that the only way it is going to die is when people stop buying the games. Whether or not they are good, it just doesn't matter. I somewhat feel that if Pikmin was meant/or could have been the next pokemon. It probably came a little to early, and the game just wasn't marketed as much as it could have been. Just my thoughts on the subject.

It would be interesting to see some new megafranchise on the market, I agree with that. I hope the upcoming Pikmin 3 can appeal to a broader audience. That being said, I think what the Pokemon series needs the most is a good injection of change. I'd love to see a 3D action game where you explore the world as any one of the Pokemon, with a move set you could control and vast environments of all shapes and sizes. Either that or a 2D Pokemon with a new art styIe, battle system and/or story format.
I really don't understand why people say things like this. Why should it die? It has a large dedicated fan-base who enjoy every installment in the series. Why would they stop making them? Because you don't enjoy it? I don't see how these games affect you in the slightest if you don't buy them. No, Pokemon shouldn't die.

There is so much rehashment. Nothing changes. its the same battle system, same see-through "storyline", same "quest". Nothing changes. That is what gets my goat. Its the same battle system, etc, etc, etc. Pokemon, NEEDS a serious overhaul is what I'm saying. But, the series is being milked so much, that I don't understand how people can keep buying it when they know its the same game as last year's. That is why I'm saying the series should die.

Couldn't agree more. Imagine the outrage and riots that will occur on our streets when people realize there will be no reward for "catching them all." :?
Over 15 million Poke-freaks can't go wrong, that's how much Diamon/Pearl sold, and counting! Imagine how much HeartGold and SoulSilver will sell. You can hate Pokemon if you want to but you can't deny it's staying power and how strong the franchise has been even after all these years.
Ten years ago, I loved it, but now I think I've grown out of it even though nostalgia can be strong sometimes. But when kids who weren't even born when Pokemon came out is going crazy over it, Nintendo must be doing something right.
These kids never played Gold and Silver before so I have no problems when Nintendo is remaking for the new generation to experience what we've played when we were young. Heck, I sometimes I wish I was a kid now so I can have fun with all this new tech with the game like online trading, etc. Remember linking with wires between two Gameboys? Yeah, so primitive!
Also, at its core, the games are very solid and deep traditional JRPGs. But it's perfectly designed where JRPG fans would enjoy it while simple enough for little kids to enjoy it as well. That's not rehashing to me. That's a formula that works and Nintendo mastered it.
I think that Pokemon needs to seriously evolve from now on. I'd love to see a successful console iteration that plays like an adventure game on the world map but the battles plays out in the old-fashioned Pokemon style. Bah, probably won't ever happen.

So, like I said, they should die because you don't like it. Can't you realize that others don't feel the same? If all these people are buying it, then obviously people must like it. I see nothing wrong with you wanting them to make a game with a drastic overhaul, but I don't agree with you thinking they should just kill the franchise if they decide not to. That's just selfish. Others are consistently enjoying each installment of the franchise, so there's no reason to kill it off. Not one good reason.
I'm sorry if the way I think comes across as selfish and that the company should only cater to me; I don't mean it that way. But really think about it. What has changed besides the graphics and adding online play? Nothing. No story, no engaging villians, just some very bland reiterations of the same thing. Its boring. To me anyway. That is my reason for this series needing to go on a hiatus.
Pokemon is a gateway RPG. People get into it because its simple and everyone plays it, then next thing you know your into Dragon Age... or am I the only thats happened to?

Agreed. There's absolutely no reason it should die since there's millions of people buying the games. Don't like, don't play it. I'm not arguing with that. I agree very little has changed, it's probably one of the most repetitive games out there. But if people still enjoy it, why stop making them? They aren't going to kill it off to make you happy. They're going to continue, and please the people that are making them money. I would also love a new game on the wii with a deeper story and modifications. But I also think they should continue the ds games as they are. I'm one of the people that hasn't missed a pokemon rpg since the start. I recognize that they're extremely repetitive and little changes from game to game. But I can't deny the fact that they're extremely addictive. I put more hours into every pokemon game than I do any other game out there. I'd be disappointed if they stopped making them entirely. And how does each game affect you, a non-consumer? Who would benefit if Pokemon was killed off? Maybe Nintendo's competitors, but no one else.

That isn't what he's saying. Pokemon is succeeding on the level it is because of marketing. He's upset that they are reselling the same game over and over and over. Even IF the formula is to remain the same, imagine what the story could be by now with all the games that have been released. They could have enveloped the characters quite a bit. Look at Harry Potter. Like it or not, but the series evolves with its audience. So perhaps it is more what could be done with the series, than hating it.

I think Game Freak can focus on something else and make money. Other 3rd party up and coming companies could try to get their hands into the world of gaming. Look at the Mario & Luigi series. Its only been 3 games, yet I haven't heard anything for a M&L 4. Pokemon is in a rut. They really can't change anything, not is there anything "new" they can try.

No kidding. I can't be the only one who thinks the whole "trading between 3 or 4 games" thing is getting a bit dated. I don't know that it even needs to be the last game of the series. I just think it's time for a fully realized, stand alone pokemon RPG. Something fresh and exciting.
The games are fun and they are entirely a breed of their own, why fix what isn't broken? I could list 100 FPS games that are so similar to each other that are vaguely separable and that is mostly by graphics alone, how many games are like Pokemon? Not many. So who cares if the games are samey, there's nothing else like the pokemon games on the market (That is actually good) you can spout "Old, been there done that, no innovation" but does that stop the games from being fun? Nope.Im_singleThey don't have to "fix unbroken games" to overhaul the series. They can continue to make all the gameboy pokemon games they want. I just think a lot of people who have played those games to death but might still be fans of the franchise are looking for something fresh and exciting to bring them back in. I'm a huge fan of the franchise but have grown tired of the same old storyline of a young trainer who starts with a pokemon from Professor "Tree" and goes from place to place and takes on Team so and so who can't believe a little kid has ruined their plans of domination by exploiting the newest legendary pokemon, becomes league champion and has to trade with 2 or 3 different version of the same game to complete the pokedex. I'd just like a new addition to the existing catalogue of games that caters to the pokemon vets who want something more fleshed out and stand alone. It's time. There's no reason they couldn't do something like that in ADDITION to the more traditional Pokemon games.
