Why are fps boss battles so weak these days?

What happened to the days when boss battles actually meant a challenge? I just beat Deus Ex: HR, and without giving anything away I can honestly say they were the easiest boss battles I've ever played, and I didn't even optimize my character's upgrades specifically for those situations. Not to mention, the final boss was rather disappointing. The same goes for the first Bioshock. I went into that battle thinking it would be tough and it was really rather easy. I understand this isn't really the focus of the game, but wouldn't it just be easier to make a more challenging final level if the final boss isn't overly exciting (especially when the rest of the game is often really good)?

Now, they aren't the only 2 games with this problem, but they're two notable ones. Anyone else miss the days of interesting boss battles?

Well Deus Ex isn't really the type of game that should have bosses, imo. It's also widely regarded that the final boss in Bioshock was the game's weakest part.

Most FPS games don't even have bosses anymore. If they do, they're usually just hugely scripted events that aren't really that much fun/challenging. See: Resistance 2, Bulletstorm, Killzone 3.

Old style games, like Doom where a Cyberdemon popped out of nowhere, aren't even that prominent anymore. Resistance 3's Widowmaker fight was pretty fun. Wolfenstein had some solid boss battles and so did the other Raven helmed game Singularity. I'm hoping Rage will have some cool bosses too.

I'm not really sure what those games are like, but from my experience with shooters (first or third person), they seem to be trying to make it more realistic. Having a human opponant surviving a large amount of bullets with a big health meter is not realistic. So they make them as weak as any other opponant, just with perhaps more skill, or more shields or cover.

I like it actually. While I usually think my games don't need to be realistic, this sort of style works best with shooter games in my opinion.

Games I am refering too are: The darkness, Uncharted, 007 Blood Stone, Halo

this is true, as was shown in R6V2 and it's laughable final boss. In the case of COD (specifically MW2 since WAW had a good ending level), the final level should have been harder to make up for it (though, at that point I lost interest in the story and was just playing for the action). It just seems like a lot of games lack a strong ending in terms of combat, since the ending cutscene/sequence is often not that bad. Though, U2 had a nice final boss battle.

Have FPS games ever had decent bosses? I mean, outside of the Serious Sam games where you fight the most ridiculous, most oversized enemies imagineable, they've always been some degree of awful.

The hardest bosses I have Y game are pretty much anything bosslike from the first two Metroid Primes, nothing else has been challenging, I mean, the boss at the end of Halo 3 is a floating basketball, really?
