I own a lot of FPS games becuase I play multiplayer a lot but I almost never play the single player becuase most of them are terrible. I tried playing black ops but I got bored in about an hour its just the same crap over and over again. Other games in other genres usually mix things up to get rid repetion Uncharted for example mixes things up with platforming and puzzles most shooters on the other hand is just shooting the same 3 or 4 enemies for 8 hours. Even Bioshock one of the best FPS games I have played got really boring towards the end becuase you basiclly fight the same few enemies the whole game. The only reason that game isnt another mediocre shooter is the story and atmosphere. The best FPS I have ever played by far is HL2.

Why do Call of Duty players complain about crappy FPS games? Because they play Call of Duty.

Try Crysis, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat, The Darkness.

I remember back when they didn't focus simply on multiplayer. That seems so long ago.

I dont get how you can find black ops "boring", it was extremely intense and very good.

Stalker was quite good i guess... if you have a good pc.

Because you've played only current gen. mainstream FPS's that focus on MP, with the obvious exception of other titles (2-3) since i can't read your mind. Its only natural to feel that way, with such a minuscule selection of FPS's that you played. What in flying **** did you possibly expect?

Here, son. FPS's with legendary stories.

It must be getting popular to bash call of duty campaigns. I think they're brilliant. They're different from stalker, Metro 2033 or FarCry (all of which I love), they're linear and scripted but that doesn't make them terrible.

I've really enjoyed many recent FPS singler-player campaigns myself. For instance Halo 3, ODST, Reach, Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, and Black Ops.

Not terrible, but I can imagine someone gets the impression that FPS campaigns are shallow if all they play is Call of Duty. They're decent, and fun to play if you've got a day or two with nothing to do, but they obviously lack substance when compared to some of the other shooters mentioned here.

IMO, COD4 had a surprisingly good SP campaign. Short as hell, but memorable. "All Ghillied Up" is a classic mission, for me at least.

Becuase most fps focus on mp.

Would you rather have a great 12 hr sp campaign or a mp that you can put 100+ hrs into.

Because everyone is too busy playing MW2 multiplayer. No offense, people, but there are other games out there.

Of course, I'm talking about the fanboys, not ALL of the MW2 players.

Same. So far in SP shooters this year, Metro's 12 hours left a much more lasting impression than COD:BO's or any COD games' SP's for that matter.

I agree that most FPSs have pretty lame SP campaigns... However there are a few exceptions. Two of my favourite games of all time, Half-Life 2 & Bioshock, have excellent SP campaigns.

Unfortunately it has become acceptable for games these days to feature multiplayer (that you must pay extra for if you're on the 360) as the main game and the single player as throw away bonus content you can skip.

This is why I tend to stick to games made prior to this generation.

Because they focus on multiplayer. Also i think that hl2, crysis and stalker have pretty poor mp as well. Just cant compare with oldies like doom and far cry.

To be honest i find those "nonlinear campaigns" to be utter boredom in comparison and id rather play cod because it does not bore you to death.

LOL yup same here... multiplayer is fun in doses but the best FPS live or die on their single player campaign.

Nobody wants to go back to the darkness and despair that was the Quake 3 years.

are you kidding? S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl probably is the worst single player. u just take mission here and walk to there is some far away places, so many goals are given at a time and the diary itself was very confusing. never did i find out how this game works lol. may be i don't have the mind to play it ...... but i was really really bored. :-(

COD these days is just a Michael Bay movie on steroids minus the story and twice the plot holes...

Anyway I think most FPSs purposely shaft singleplayer. Games just aren't about making great stories anymore...

i think a lot of these multiplayer focused fps's should drop single player modes and storytelling completely and just make what people play them for: fast pick-up-and-play fun. anyway, i thought bioshock was great. i mean, i probably wouldve found it to be repetitive if i just ran around with my shotgun popping splicers, but there are more options than that. the plasmids were good not just in how they functioned as alternate firearms (har har har), but in how they involved the rest of the game world. water can be electrocuted, oil set ablaze, objects flung, and all sorts of combinations resulting from the AI. mix in the scenarios of killing with ones that appeal to your humanity and you have really diverse gameplay.
