I don't really run into these sort of people, are you just talking generally? Or are there places on the internet that you see a lot of this happening? Indeed, people do get defensive when their favorite franchise is attacked but that's just human nature really, to defend something in which you cherish.

Because by saying the game you like sucks, the troll implies you suck for playing it. People get mad, trolls laugh, rinse and repeat

People like to have their opinions postively reinforced. When something you like is insulted, you're more likely to feel insulted yourself, as if there's something wrong with you for liking it. So some people get upset because of it.

The way i see it, if someone argues that something I like (like a game) isn't good, in order to agree with that person, or accept them, I would first have to accept that my liking was misplaced, and that I had made a mistake. Admitting that a game is as bad as someone says it to be would mean that all the time spent playing that game would have been wasted. And if that game has become as a part of you as a human ("yeah, I love MGS!"--or "playing Age of Empires was really something, wasn't it?") it becomes harder to admit such a loss.

If I've spent lots of time playing it, I know I'll get pretty upset about it in an argument unless I rationalize it somehow, even partially. But some people don't like to compromise, and if that's the case, i don't think it's particularly useful to continue arguing at all..

To paraphrase:

Because by saying the game you like sucks, the troll implies you suck for playing it. People get mad, trolls laugh, rinse and repeat

Because they like it? It's a criticism and disagreement of their opinion and choice, and many people are unable to distinguish between a difference of opinion from a personal attack, and hence become offended and therefor defensive.

The same reason people get extremely mad when their favorite sports team is insulted, or their favorite music group, or their favorite film, or their favorite TV show....etc, etc, etc.

This is true when someone is expressing constructive criticism on your preferred game (ie: "I think CoD maps are too small and you move too fast"), but some people just offend some games gratuitously ("CoD is the worse gaem EVAR!!1!"). I think that's where opinions end and where trolling begins

If people make valid claims, then it doesn't bother me. It's when people have the inability to look at things objectively, and then choose to say, "that sucks"---then it becomes annoying. For example: Mario 64 is a brilliant game. Beautiful art direction, control, and play mechanics. This game was obviously very well thought out and did what it set out to do. You can personally say you aren't a fan of the gameplay, but it is a very well made game.

An example on the other side of the spectrum is Fallout3/New Vegas. Many people adore these games. That is fine. However, after playing 3, I can say that I'm not too fond of the gameplay AND that I find them to be extremely buggy. Conceptually these games are pretty good, but when you sit down and play them they are more often than not, a MESS!

I get upset under certain cirumstances, especially when "Fan Boys" have a negative attitude towards games they have never played, because it contributes to leading gamers away, from playing a game that might be a very good game.

I think that the abundance of comments like the example you've provided have warped some people into confusing constructive criticism with pointless whining. I've gotten lots of angry messages for opinions as mild as "I didn't like the game because of it's slow mechanics."

I honestly don't care if people think a game I like sucks (or anything else I like). I'm confident enough in myself that I don't need someone else to tell me whether or not I should enjoy something. Now, when people troll on this site I get annoyed at the level of immaturity, not the insult itself.

The same reason that people get angry about their political party, religion, etc.

When people invest time and energy into something they want to think they are making a good choice. When someone confronts them with evidence that their choice is not optimal they naturally get defensive, as admitting the evidence is correct is akin to admitting they made the wrong choice. And not only have they made the wrong choice, but they have dedicated weeks, months, or even years to it, which makes them feel extremely foolish. Most people's egos simply will not allow this, so rather than admitting any fault they simply ignore all evidence counter to their belief. The stronger your claim against them the more hostile their response will be.

Same thing can be asked about consoles are anything about gaming. Everyone has something they like better than the next person. Why people get mad, I can't answer that because it doesn't make me mad.

Why does anyone get offended when something they care about is insulted? :D

No but seriously though some people do have problems with other opinons. Often times many people see their opinions as truth which blurs their perspective and makes them unpleasant to discuss things with.

Yep. More often than not this is the case when it comes to disagreements. Why people can't just agree to disagree is beyond me.

I think when you get down to it it simply stems from ego and immaturity. Many young people are insecure about their own opinions and feel they have something to prove. When one gets older, it's not such a threat anymore as they have more confidence in who they are, and why they believe what they do.

I suppose. Still doesn't explain the obsession over trivial matters such as a person's opposing opinion on a videogame, let alone the need to insult someone because they like something you don't. Always seemed childish to do so (in regards to the latter, that is).

I think immaturity explains a lot of it. People resort to ad-hominem tactics when someone disagrees with them trying to make their point of view seem more valid by personally attacking or trying to point out flaws of character instead of addressing the argument at hand. These people need to attend debate 101.

If you insult their favorite games, you are incidentally saying that they have bad tastes. People like to feel right.
