Why do soooo many games have the over-shoulder cam, it's getting boring!!!

It works great in Gears of War, and seems to fit with RE5, but so many other games have the same over-shoulder zoomed in view. Whatever happened to seeing your characters feet? Sure it helps with accuracy, but when you're exploring the environment do you really want the camera right on top of the character all the bloody time. It's starting to annoy the hell out of me... and I know what you're thinking, 'don't play those games then', but trouble is I like 3rd person action games and I really like alot of the games that do it - Kane and Lynch, Mass Effect, Red Faction, but I'm just getting tired of putting up with the crappy view with no options to change it (you just have to love GTA IV for giving us players a few options to play around with).

Anyway, rant over!

What's your view?

agreed, i was playing Batman demo and, unless you run, its over the shoulder all the time. which is lame really when you consider that batman is meant to be so nimble... but then again, the game sucked anyway

I prefer first person view over third person...I wish all games like that (first person and third person games) would offer the option to play either way....third person view games tend to be clunky for me..(*cough*...Fable 2)

I really like that viewpoint myself so as far as I'm concerned the more the merrier. It seems to work quite well in the games I've played and is typically the best camera angle for the gameplay of those games.

While I prefer Third over First, I'd love the option to have either in every game, and have it done right. ES IV and Fallout 3 had the option, but it was pointless to use Third...

Seeing that there has already been a thread made complaining about this, my guess is that all of you guys just get bored TOO quickly. I mean really, how many games were just 2D side-scrollers back on the SNES? Pretty much ALL of them. Did anyone complain? No. And don't go saying "this is a new era and we can accomplish more". There comes to a limit people. Video games need to have a certain degree of simplicity. Going with 3rd person view is what's best for all the games coming out now. Unless you guys want to go back to 2D side-scrolling. Because right now, there are 2 views in most games. 1st person, and 3rd person. Take your pick. If not, make your own game with something new (which isn't likely, because it isn't possible).

I don't know, it works very well for shooters but I prefer a more zoomed out centered camera for my adventure/brawler games, not super zoomed out but close enough to see the action and far enough away that your char isnt taking up 3/4 of the screen.

I agree that options would be nice but if the game is really good small concerns like that tend to fade away fairly quickly.

What we have beats a top-down view. Always made me feel like I'm in a helicopter. Not very realistic.

I have no problem with it. Resident Evil 4 made it a fad, but since it works so incredibly well it became a mainstay. For shooter games in which you need to be able to see your character, it's great.

Very annoying. The reason why I only played GoW once.
