[QUOTE="spiltmilk"]Cheap, gimmicky controls, it sure as hell aren't for its simplistic games or graphics. dvader654

Awesome new member.

Yeah I think a much better word to describe the games would be accessible, and actually the games are also a reason for the Wii's success.

The hype and price I would say. That were my reasons for getting it anyway, shame really as it's collecting dust at the moment, not many good games to choose from is there.

-Clever marketing, lots of media exposure.

-People are like sheep and buy whatever is hot.

-People think it is cheap, but don't realize that it is last gen hardware with an overpriced peripheral.

-Most people have not actually looked at the horrible game lineup before buying the system.

-Nintendo did a good job of hiding the fact that Twilight Princess is available for Gamecube.

BassMan

You´re the first one I met with a really true opinion without fanboyism or stuff like that.Repect.And BTW you got it all right 8)

One thing I have to add:The controller is hiding behind cheap pizes, but If you buy the Wiimote+Nunchuk+Pad to play everything the way it should, you pay pretty much.

The thing is, the people that buy the Wii dont really care about all that, and that's a bet Nintendo was willing to make at the start.

...and it worked.Sony tried the same, but if I look at the European and American sales I see it didn´t work.Maybe even the Mainstream gamers get a bit more intelligent after all...or it´s because of the price...whatever...

I have to add that the Wii has much potential, but potential alone is not egnough...Nintendo is long egnough in the Biz to know that. The N64 sold really good at the release, but got down really quick after a short time. They didn´t have egnough good software. If I look on the Wii-Release-Lists I see the same problem.

Also Clever marketing, affordable, and aimed at a wider audience. Its uniqueness sets it apart from other consoles. Not to mention a lot of mature players like old-school.

This isn't much of an arguement or discussion on my part, and my reason isn't the ONLY reason, but it's a major factor.

It's inexpensive.

Solid launch lineup and Virtual Console game seem to be the reasons (they're my reasons anyway).

It's cheap, and even cheaper next to the PS3 and 360...and people buy into fads. Look at Beanie Babies and that Tickle Me Elmo stuff...I kind of see it as the same thing. With everyone buying it though, the Wii is sure to get more developer attention so it will probably be end up being a decent console for about 4-5 years.

I however do not plan to buy one unless I see some seriously good games that actually take advantage of the controller. A really good fps and maybe some kind of sword fighting game for example.

its marketed to casual gamers and people who dont need to use what the 360 and ps3 offers. some also dont understand how the 360 and the ps3 other functions while the wii kept it simple

Here's the main reasons while the Wii is selling like hell.

  • It's cheap
  • It's pick up and play looking, giving non-gamers an urge to try it
  • That's all.
But hell, The 360 won in my opinion. Greatest support, better games coming out regularly, huge online store and great live network. Our Wii these days is lagging along but it still doing well because of the points I wrote.

At the rate the Wii is selling worldwide, Nintendo could easily win the console wars. We're doomed.

Ok, I guess here's my list for the Wii's popularity.

1. There is still something like 80% of the US population that do not own HDTVs. Yes, it really is that much. So Nintendo made a system that will look pretty good on 80% of people's TVs. That's a big market not to cater to (360, PS3).

2. There are is also a large number of people who are not technically savvy. I've spoken to a lot of people who think HD "looks nice" and they have a hard time seeing a major difference in graphics between a PS2 and an Xbox 360.

3. Yes, its cheap. Gaming is an expensive hobby, and not too many people can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a "toy".

Now, take those three statements and look at what Nintendo did. They made a console that is cheaper than the competition, and will look just fine on everyone's TV set. Oh, and they were nice enough to package a "free" game. That's mass appeal. Not to mention that the games are fun, and on average, people spend a couple of hours a week playing games. Not the 100 hours plus that people on these forums do.

Interesting how only a few of you mention it's because it's fun.

The Wii looked like fun to me, so I brought one, and guess what, it IS fun.  There's also a lot to be said with the remote-control approach, it feels so...natural to be able to kick back with one hand/arm doing all the work whilst maintaining complete comfort, they just got it right, the whole remote-thing is genius IMO, I can't wait until the games kick-in, then we'll start to see how it sells for real.

Did I mention it's fun?

I had a GC.  :)

Another reason for Nintendo's sucess is that they know exactly what they're doing.  Remember when Sega came out with the Genesis, and Nintendo came out with the GameBoy?  we all thought the big N was brain dead at that point.  But, years later, we all see how shrewd a move that was.

also, the Big N has been in the video game business then any of these other companies.  that has to count for something.

Because it's fun to use the controller, I guess.
