Thank you GhettoBob , JGonspy, and BDANick !!! You voiced your opinions in a civilized way without resorting to name calling or insults. In reply to:

GhettoBob- Thank you for disagreeing with my statement, but still understanding that my opinion is still of some value.

JGonspy- Are you trying to tell me to expect the worse in movies or games, so that way when it starts getting intense, I will not be shocked? That actually sounds like it could work. Thanks for the tip.

BDANick- WOW...That was one of the most detailed explainations that I have seen. I am now starting to realized that trying to get scared is the whole reason to play those games. I can understand, because I like to play WW2 games because of that high of being able to play the D-Day landing and knowing that you are takeing a trip back in time where countless number of soldiers died to fight for their freedom, and the freedom of others.

NOTE: My topic was not meant as only an opinion, but to ask why everyone else likes these games. So instead of getting defensive, explain why you disagree.

I can easily play unreal tournament. The gore in it is soo fake it is almost laughable :D. Full metal alchemist on the other hand does have some gorey moments.

Because deep inside, people enjoy having the **** scared out of them, their buttons pushed, or their adrenal glands activated.

It's the same reason why people ride roller coasters, go toa haunted house, go on ghost tours, read scary novels and so on. People want to be thrilled.

Shame-usBlackley

I normally sacrifice baby kittens to Samael before playing Silent Hill myself.

There is no doubt that gaming in general is not for everyone. But being 27, i really do not get into fluffy little games for kids. Gaming has been around since the late 70s, so those of us that grew up with games, have now become adults (some more than others)

With adult gamers will come adult games. I for one am not for censorship, but i do agree with the rating system. I have a 9 yr old step son and if my wife ever caught him with Manhunt or a GTA game, that would be the end of my gaming time as well.

This is why the Wii is so promenent. Casual/non gamers droll over its simplicity and innovention.

I do agree with the nature of man enjoying to be scared. I own every SilentHill (RE SUX) and loved playing them all late atnight. There asgood as a horror film. Scaring from roller coasters, horror films, or just hiding behind a door is justthe fun of life.'

If you do notlike it, trysomething else. Ifyou like it, dont look down on those who do not, thatswhat freedoms all about.

Personally I cant blame the TC for being upset (although his reaction does seem a bit "extreme"). There are a lot of games that dont appeal to me at all simply because, they're just too gratuituosly violent for my taste. For example, once I found out that the Darkness was all about eating human hearts I declined to even play the demo. Also, everyone seems tolike the gameManhunt but once I saw the gamplay I knew I'd never be playing it. These are just a couple of examples, but for the most part I dont like overly gory games, Iwill make an occasional exception like with Halflife2 or Dead Rising.

I think developer have focused too much on games like this lately myself.

Often they throw in exploding heads and bodies, and tons of bloody environments as a cheap way to achieve shock value. And to tell the truth, it seems gamers in general are much more blood thirsty then they were 10 or 20 years ago. Personally I think that hacking apart other characters with a chainsaw for fun and then raping thier bodies or something is very disgusting. It seems this newer generation only makes hits out of games that have a maximum amount of carnage and death.

The earlier horror based games like castlevania, had a fun vampire theme but the fun of the game was getting thru the well designed platforming levels, not on the bloodshed.

And I will admit that I really enjoysurvivalbased games where the horror is based on more realistic, intelligent fear like Disaster Report, Fatal Frame, Silent Hill and Clock Tower, where the majority of the game your goal is to get thru the world alive, using your brain to problem solve and use resourses you find to your advantage, instead of games where your only objective is shoot everything in the head until it explodes all over your screen.

When I look at video games coming out I always wonder why so many are just constantly about killing enemies. Even a more benign seeming genre like RPGs most games are about killing scores of enemies, so that you can become stronger and kill scores of even stronger enemies. Very few games actually focus on actual role playing in that case, putting you in the shoes of that character in order to simulate trying to live in a strange environment, but are just level grinding thru killing.

Of course most movies and tv shows are no better.. I think most prime time tv shows are about someone getting murderered in a bizarre fashion and some putz in lame sunglasses solving the case, and most movies are all based on introducing characters and then bringing them into some sort of epic battle or another. When people try to make movies that are slow paced, psychological, and intelligent and put them into a national release, they are either underground releases only, or they are actually rewritten to include more action.

Im definitely not saying there is no place for enemies in games, or war simulation etc when it is done well, but killing and death are really a very small part of life, and a part of life that is less fun than many other parts of life, but is over represented by video games and other media for now.

Well put. I think the one thing most people are overlooking here is age. I mean the TC sounds young, and every game mentioned on this thread is rated mature and not meant to played by people under a certain age. Therefore maybe he actually shouldnt be playing these games yet.

I think, for better or for worse, that games provide a certain kind of "release" that no other medium can provide. As long as that "release" is there, developers will continue to push the envelop in terms of what they put in games, no matter how graphic it gets.

I think the forums are being invaded by the Christian right-wing. Did Mitt Romney put you up to this? That sly devil, always looking at how to use the latest technology available to pimp his agenda...such as blogs. JK After reading your post, you clearly are the demo audience for the Nintendo Wii.maddog95376

I'm Catholic, and I love all kinds of games...even (and sometimes especially) the more graphic ones. But I don't love them because they're graphic.

To the Topic Creator, I don't blame you for not liking violent games...some people just can't/won't tolerate some things. I just get upset when people like that actually try to make gamers feel bad for liking games...which you clearly aren't doing. I'm just saying. :P

well,as much as id like to start yelling and screaming at you,its just going to make myself look like an ass,so ill say it in a different way.

all those games you menchioned, they do what theyre genre is supposed to do.scare people.its genre is horror, you cant play a horror game without anything scary in it.duh.
if you dont like it,play a different genre.i suggest mario, yepp id bet anyone money your the mario sunshine champion.
also, everyone has different opinions than you do,ive had it up to here with people acting like what they think(is gorey and violent, must be gorey and violent)applys to everyone else
so just because one person is playing a game you think is gorey could be very normal for them, wich means that no ones a gore addict just because you think a game is gory.

theres alot more i couldve said, but i couldnt say it without cursing, and dont feel like getting banned

p.s is there like a christan revolt going on in these boreds, seems like every other day theres some prune complaing about this stuff!jebus christ!

I'm curious to see how you would react playing Killer 7...

Anyways, when I played Half-Life 2's Ravenholm, I was creeped out aswell. Even though it creeped me out, it was ridiculously fun, and became one of my favorite levels in videogame history. I can understand how you felt about being scared of games like Half-Life 2, but don't you think reinstalling Windows to get rid of it a bit extreme? I mean, it's just a game.

WOW... you have just won an argument with you wit, bravo:roll:.

If you read the whole thread you would understand that I am not putting anyone down, nor am I saying I am better. I actually somewhat envy those people who can play those kind of games. Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and equivalent are highly creditable games, and I feel as though I am missing out on these franchises due to the fact that I get incredibly squeamish around those subject matters. What stumps me though, is that I can watch or play any historic game or movie about war(which is horrible in itself) without even flinching, but I can't stomach fictional zombies trying to eat you.

If anyone wants to dispute this topic, then by all means do. Just please don't result to saying that it has anything to do with my religion, my race, or my age. That is just an escape goat for not having anything good to say.

Thank you for everyone who is responding in a MATURE way.

P.S.> I needed to do a complete reinstall of windows anyway, so that just gave me the motivation to actually get it done :D. Remember the good old days when Mortal Kombat was actually considered graphic, and fun games didn't have to resort to bloodshed to make the game fun.(sigh)... That was the good old days;).

Like any art form, there's a need to "push the envelop" in terms of questionable content. The only difference is that games are interactive... Where do we draw the line?

I am utterly disturbed by the games that people play and actually give good reviews to.

I kept hearing all this talk about how Bioshock is going to be "the best game ever made" and how everyone should preorder it, so I decided to check it out. So I read up on it and was looking through it, and I was horrified at that game. It is twisted, disgusting, scary, and all around disturbing, and people ACTUALLY like to play that, much less look at it. This was not the only game that I found horribly disturbing. Half Life 2 was just as bad. I was playing the demo of hl2 and I started the second level and once I started playing I immediately shut it down, uninstalled it yet I still was soo nauseous after it that I decided to do a complete reinstall of windows to make sure that every trace of that twisted game was gone from my computer.

These are just a few disturbing games that everyone seems to like , here are a few more-FEAR, Resident Evil, and system shock.

Is it just me that thinks it is gross and disturbing to play these vulgar "so called" games? I am the first to admit that I hate anything scary or gory, but am I the only one that doesn't find it a little wrong to get pleasure out of these vulgar games.

PLEASE: NOBODY GET UPSET AT ME, I just want to know if anyone else feels the same way, or if not then tell me why do these games appeal to you.

Thank you for listening to my opinion on this subject, and any responses are welcomed. I feel as though I am missing out on all these new awe insipiring games because of the disturbing subject matter.

lmao that's good really good. Funny to how those are some of my fav games. Then agian there some of the best so i don't see why i would be the only one. I think that's what some people want as what some people want in movies scary gore with death blood and some more death. Just like how some people like sports so i don't really seea bad reason with you not liking em. Just that you'll see more people saying they like it then not to like it. Your basicly saying you just don't like this type of games like how some people don't like rpgs.

Well, I've read through the whole topic (yay for me), and I'm glad that you respect our opinions. I must say that I respect your opinion too.

Regarding fear... There are 2 ways of "fear" - one is the basic "jump out into your face," which you can sometimes see on websites - first something normal, then suddenly an ugly face pops up (usually with some weird and annoying sounds).

The 2nd type is the deeper type... It makes you afraid in inside.

F.E.A.R. is a nice example of this 2nd type. The 1st type would be the HL zombie level (I absolutely hate the fast zombies... You hear em, can't see em, and suddenly they're behind your back!). Also, I absolutely hate invisible guys.

I'm not sure if facing fear head-on is the best way to get you "on better terms with creepy games," but it probably is A way, even if it isn't the best.

Regarding blood and gore... It isn't always a bad thing - depends on the game. Sometimes it really adds to the atmosphere.

But of course, there will always be games which overdo it (can't say I object tho :P ), tho I can't think of one from top of my head.

Oh yeah, and I know you've been told this before - but you're mixing up disturbing and creepy. Disturbing is the last paragraph (before this one) - overdoing stuff. I remember seeing a couple of those kind of games, but I can't recall their names.

I'm not exactly the kind of person that likes being scared by a game either. Hell, I don't like being scared period. So I avoid games like FEAR, DOOM, etc.. Though it only matters when the game is in 1st-person. So RE4 isnt very scary at all to me since it's in 3rd-person.

And for some reason I get scared in most FPS single-player campaigns for no real reason. But in online multiplayer i'm just fine. I guess it's because i'm a very competitive person. hehe

and finally,i held back on my statment,i was veryy freaking mature,do say that crap just because you disagreed with what i said.you have to realize, after reading one of these clueless topics everyday being negative towards anything other than bright and shiney vediogames, how agrivated can we get?

if its possible, tell us your relgion, race, age just for statistics(well use the honor system here,be honest)

If you would have read the rest of the posts, then you would have realise that a lot of people have disagreed with me, and as long as they explain why without trying to insult, then I am more than glad to try to see it their way. You actually where handling it well, until you threw in the comment about religion. That last comment made the creditability of the rest of your post go down the drain. So if you want to debate this without trying to insult me, then I would be more than glad to listen :D .

I LOST!!! .I downloaded the Bioshock demo, and I couldn't even get past the first cutscene with the slicse or whatever before I had to quit and uninstall it. How sad is that.

Does anyone know of a good scary game that you actually play with a squad, or team in singleplayer? I just hate that feeling when you are all alone, that is when it gets creepy :| . Please recommend me a good squad based game that is slightly scary/suspenseful.

Thank you in advance for all the help.

P.S.> I do not not need to see a psychiatrist. I am a perfectly normal scaredy cat  .

Whats disturbing to some people is not to others. If you are younger and havent seen a lot of horror movies than you may be more susceptible to be bothered by fear and graphic violence than others. Many people enjoy the rush, the adrenaline horror movies or games provide. Its really an aqquired taste I guess. There is nothing wrong with not liking the horror genre of games/movies but you are missing out by not giving them a fair chance, its fun to be scared now and then.

They are just games. I don't see what is wrong with them. Half-Life 2 is great, you are fighting for a good cause. I fail to see how it is sick, twisted, disturbing and vulgar.

I don't play those games because my graphics card can't handle it :P. Lots of people play the Sims 2that's not disturbing. Lots of people play World of Warcraft, that's not disturbing. Lots of people play Civilization IV, that's not disturbing. So I don't know where you got your information from. Plus, I don't even know what BioShock is about.

Perfect example of how an innocent game can turn into AO because someone got bored :P.

Different games are meant for different people.

Bioshock, FEAR etc etc are supposed by a disturbing and scary that's the whole purpose of the game.

I respect your opinion but I love these games, they let me escape from this world and go into a world, be it dark and disturbing, it's downright fun and entertaining

ConfusedZone

Why do people read Stephen King, Clive Barker and all that jazz? Why do they like watching horror movies and gross teen comedies? It's the same thing. Don't worry too much about it.

Are you in the hospital now, the last time i played Half-life 2 i burned down my house to remove all traces of the game, then i got sun burn so my skin would peal.

But are you serious you re-installed windows, why did you even download it in the first place. WaitWhy are you even on this website, all games have something wrong with them but dont over react and re-install windows.

I can definitely see ConfusedZone's point. If I understand correctly, you do enjoy action-packed games, though you strongly dislike gory ones. Games like those mentioned in the opening and following posts are meant to be disturbing, which is way beyond 'thrilling'. I've been part of the gaming community for a very long time (though I've just started posting here) and I think we've been witnessing a little abuse on the gore side throughout the years (dismemberments, exploding heads, bodies torn apart, SoF2). I mean, I don't really need to see splattered brain dripping from the walls to enjoy a game and tend to consider excessive gore some kind of drawback to a game's overall value (though I like both Half-Life2 and Resident Evil Any). I agree with CZ on that.

Allright, about a useless display of violence: I've been at a games store and took a peek at 'The darkness' on the 360. Dude, that is a disturbing game. At first it looked like a F.E.A.R. clone, but it quickly degenerated. I mean, people that get their faces bitten off (by your character btw) and stuff like that. CZ, I'd stay the heck away from that.
