It depends - if I'm really excited about a game, I'll pay $60 for it. If it looks good, I'll wait until it's $40. If it's meh, might be good, might not, I'll wait until it's $20.

It's kind of fun to get a game on release day, when everybody is talking about it online, etc.

Because usually I've looked forward to the game for over a year, and want to experience it as soon as possible.

Because I pay the price I think the games are worth at. Some games are worth the full retail price, for others I prefer to wait for a drop in price because I don't want to play right away or because I know the gameplay value won't diminish. Almost all MP games I buy, I buy at near release.

I always wait for price drops too. A game has to be at least less than $30 for me to want to buy it. The only full games I'll consider buying at full price are only my most anticipated.

I normally always do. I have Gamefly, so I actually rent more games than I do buy. Otherwise, I like to look through the $20 or less games for some good finds.

I got burned on a few bad purchases. Now I buy them used on Amazon for a fraction of what they're selling for.

Indeed. A lot of trust has been lost between gamers and publishers over the years. Why do you need to wait months to download patches for a game that is supposed to work correctly off the shelf in the first place. I do not get paid to be a beta tester--and I don't suffer some horrible fanboi ailment to volunteer (or feel 'sorry') for the developers either.

My price point for most games is $20 or less, unless there's a great MP side to the game. Games drop in price fairly fast.

When I was in college and highschool I waited for price drops now I'm very financially stable and have plenty of money plus I'm extremely impatient.

I'll still pay full price for niche games or for developers who aren't just following trends. I'll probably pick up the Witcher 2 as it seems CDProjekt is one of the few remaining RPG developers that still value RPG elements. Likewise, I paid full price for Yakuza 3 and will gladly do the same for Yakuza 4, because if you don't buy these games at launch, you'll never see the sequels. But other than that, I wait most of the time. I originally tried to limit myself to a strict budget to reduce my backlog. Unfortunately, I got so good at looking/waiting for bargains that my backlog stays the same- I just spend less money in the process.

When I had my PS3 I always waited till the games I wanted dropped to $30 or less. Actually I got my system so late in the day that I think I paid $17 for a brand new copy of MGS4. But I can see why ppl buy games for $60, they have the money to do it. If I made more money I'd rather buy the game right when it came out rather than having to wait and hear how good of a game it is from so many ppl.

Why dont most people wait till a games $20? Theres a bunch of $60 games that you know is gonna be dropped down to $20. Like mass effect 2. Its $20 now. I would have bought it for $60 if I beat the first one I bought. I look at the sales of when they drop a games price down to $20.It sells less for some reason. Im not buying another game at $60 unless its call of duty, gears of war or halo. I dont find it any funner buying the game on first day. Probably gamestop takes all the sales selling it used when it gets down to $20.

slipknot0129

GT5 was the first game I've spent $60 on, since Halo Three. And before Halo, I don't even remember. However, the industry would probably tank if everyone waited until games were $20. This gen has been good for me in that I don't play games that often anymore, so that before I even know it, I'm looking at loads of great games ranging from 20-30 dollars. Some people are psyched for Resistance 3, a series which I am yet to play and now can, for probably 40 dollars.

A variety of reasons:

I want to have it day 1, its something I simply don't want to go without.

I want to support a game that doesn't have the user base it deserves such as Yakuza.

Multiplayer in games lately has a huge dropoff after a month, and waiting for the price to drop for most games could mean getting the game far after its multiplayer has lost its audience.

A lot of games, specifically Nintendo games, may never see a price cut. Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy have never seen a price cut, and at this point I've waited years just to pick up one game.

Honestly, I spend a lot of money on games, sometimes it feels like a waste, but there are also games that I spend over 100 hours on. If I get 10 hours out of a game I spent $60 on I think kits worth it. I almost always pick up games near launch if I'm interested in them. Its an expensive hobby though, and if next generation is all motion sensors and cameras this will be my last big generation, so I might as well live it up.

I wish that was the case with a lot of games, but the fact is, A LOT of games don't hit that mark for well over a year. And if you actually want the game, you would rather pay than wait.

My prime example is Metro 2033, I was dying to play it, but when it came out I didn't have the money to fork over, so I figured I would wait. To this day, it has only dropped 10 dollars in price, and I have never seen it on sale. Oh and used it's still 45 dollars. I ended up just renting it and beating it over the course of a weekend instead.

If a game is released that is one of my favorites, I don't see the need to wait. I don't mind supporting my favorite developers.:)

I used to buy games at full price cause i didnt get that many in a year so i could afford a few full priced games. Now when looking at my list of games i consider must haves for next year (total of 11), i may have to wait a few months for the price to go down and buy them.

well when u consider most of the cod line since 4 is 40+... they dont drop by activisions standards...and this really isnt an answer...but surmise this...why do people go to the movies...or buy full priced movies...or buy entire albums for 1 or 2 songs...or...why do people buy the newest model car...its cause they can and they have the money...and they arnt patient or they just dont care...lol

If you don't care or need to play a game immediately, it certainly makes sense to wait for a price drop, as software depreciates rapidly. However, as somebody who loves this medium and supports those who develop the games I love to play, I personally feel an obligation to buy many of my games at full price to support the developers.

Grammaton-Cleric

This to some extent. I really only buy new games from developers that I have a preference for, and don't mind paying full price for as such. My last few new purchases have been from Atlus and Tri-Ace, and I prefer supporting them when they've made a good game. This being said, with how prices on some PS2 Atlus games have increased over time it has also been beneficial to purchase their games early.

If you wait until every game you buy drops to $20.00, it is likely that your friends will have already stopped playing that game, along with most people. This could take away from the online play for games like COD.

I typically do... the only game I bought in recent memory at full price was Starcraft 2.
