It’s been around 4 years since Telltale’s Walking Dead episodic adventure was released. I have a lot of great memories with this game, and it is still one of the first games that engrossed me in an interactive-story experience.

I remember being fully immersed within 10 minutes of the game. I was presented with choices from the get-go which affected the world and how others perceived me. This was and still is one of the best and most lovingly-designed experiences Telltale has given us.

And no, this is not nostalgia speaking. I’ve recently gone back and replayed the game, I still feel bad for choosing to save Duck over Shawn. These moral quandaries stick with you and that is part of what makes this game so good.

The other reason I love this game is because of its gameplay. No, the gameplay isn’t amazing but it helped made this game feel like a GAME as well as an interactive story. The various puzzles and linear exploration sections of the game break up the story. These sections aided the story. It made you feel like you were actually in the show exploring and interacting with areas like Hershel’s farm.

Now here’s my biggest problem with their newer games like their Game of Thrones and Minecraft series. WHERE THE HELL IS THE GAME.

These games still retain the great writing of the Walking Dead and Back to the Future (which nobody seems to have played), and they all mimic the writing and feel of the content its based off perfectly.

But I can’t help but feel that Telltale has shifted the direction of their games to appeal to a much younger audience, or maybe to appeal to their mobile audience. The “games” do not feel like games at all, but rather a 3-hour long cutscene with a quick time event every now and then.

There is no doubt that gameplay has been watered down in the years following the Walking Dead. They have completely branched from their point-and-click roots and simplified their games to the point where there is no game. There is nothing to break up the story apart from those pesky QTE’s.

There were only very few times in Game of Thrones where I got a chance to explore an area, even then, they are restricted to tiny, unimaginative courtyards. They even somehow managed to make exploration of Castle Black boring and restrictive. There were only about 3-4 things I could actually interact with in the courtyard at the wall, this was a huge missed opportunity.

As I stated earlier, I loved the mix between gameplay and story because I felt like I was exploring landmarks of the show. However, I didn’t feel the weight of exploring Castle Black. I didn’t feel anything because Telltale didn’t do anything to make you feel like you were in part of this world.

It is no secret that Telltale is attempting to move away from the PC and onto our phones. Telltale makes no effort in making their games a great PC experience. They have made no attempt to update the quality of the games textures, it has exactly the same graphical quality of a 4 year game. The texture quality is barely noticeable on the phone, but on a 16-inch screen, you can really see the lack of detail. This is only one of many flaws on the PC version of the game. Another which is immediately noticeable is the QTE’s. They are very clearly made for the smartphone first and the PC second. It just feels to me like they are neglecting the audience that made them who they were, they dropped what originally made them great in favour of gameplay more accessible to mobile users.

Telltale games have gone from amazing and revolutionary gaming experiences down to fun stories. Well anyway, that’s my two cents. And that is the reason why I will no longer be playing anymore Telltale games.

In a sense, Telltale games were always more about the experience than the game so it's just more of what it's always been. I'm actually glad to see them broaden their horizon to more franchises and am in love with their wonderful storytelling. Graphics never really mattered either way since it's always been more for the sake if artistic direction than realism.

I really liked the Game of Thrones one, but I love Thrones. That was the only way to get me to finish the story, because I love that world. All their other games have been too boring for me. The Jurassic Park, Back To The Future, and Walking Dead ones were a pass for me.

Do not agree.

Telltale has continued to produce awesome story games , granted Michonne´s mini series wasn´t top notch, but it was a great appetizer for walking dead season 3.

But they did a epic job with Tales from Borderlands and a decent job in Game of Thrones. Not to mention the epicness that is walking dead , season 2 was not to the highs of 1 but it was still a awesome adventure game.

Not surprised that you never heard of them because gamespot only covers mainstream games. Daedalic Entertainment is way better adventure game developers than Telltale these days.

Their game worlds are original, stories are well written and their games have challenging puzzles that are logical at the same time. Their games remind of Lucas Arts.

If Telltale added decent puzzles to their games they would be awesome. In Walking Dead Season 1 they at least had some parts where you had to think for a second, like getting the train started. In Season 2, The Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands puzzles were non-existent. I absolutely love the settings and the atmosphere of those games. Especially Tales from the Borderlands was surprisingly brilliant. But there's no challenge whatsoever. So, I don't hate them but they could be much better.

I enjoyed the Walking Dead games and god bless them for supporting PSV as long as they did... but what I didn't like that they generally did was a lack of polish. I'm talking about various glitches in their games.

The first TellTale game I bought was Jurassic Park (PS3) and it had so many polish issues. There were quite a few parts in that game where the QTEs were incredibly difficult to properly accomplish due to the game's frames per second dropping significantly making the timing way off. There were also audio glitches and graphical tearing. The game did have a decent story though. I just wish it would have had polish to go with the story.

You won't regret it. I found out about Daedalic like 1.5 years ago and ever since I've played shit ton of their games. All of them have different tone. Some are funny, others are dark or have fantasy elements etc.

I'd say pick up Deponia: The Complete Journey (pack) first. It has all three Deponia games from original trilogy and the story is amazing.

I loved TWD S1+2 and The Wolf Amoung Us. I absolutely hated Game of Thrones though. I am a snarky ASOIAF reader so that explains why I hated the story/writing. The engine however was inexcusable. The game looked dreadful. The textures looked ugly. I personally think they've taken on too many IPs. I know they've promised a new engine with the Batman game, but I'm going to wait and see before I purchase that or TWD S3

also, "hate" is a bit strong, don't you think? I mean you said you enjoyed some of their games, you just don't like the direction they've been going lately.

I would have to object to the statement that Telltale games are well written. Dialogue is fine, but the way characters behave is just irrational.

Walking Dead Season 2 was a heavily flawed game compared to the first one, and I really don't understand why so many people still love it as much as season 1. Like OP said, the entire game just feels like you are watching cutscenes with interactive dialog 90% of the game, and then you get to walk around and click on something a few times in each episode.

The biggest irk for me tho was the game's pacing. All the episodes in season 2 were very short compared to season 1, and it made the entire game feel like it was rushed through production... I also didn't like the way how they "disposed" certain characters in the game, as it really felt like the game writers just couldn't figure out what to do with a certain character, so they would just kill them off in a really dumb way whenever they inconvenienced the game's plot.

I mean Telltale games have always had the problem with your "choices don't matter" in many of their games, but the only choice you make in the entire game that actually makes a difference in season 2 is at the very end of episode 5.

The Walking Dead didn't live up to the hype either. All this talk of meaningful choices in a tight space affecting everything midway release and when it was over you got one unavoidable ending with only a difference in execution.
