You need it for hard mode. You don't even have to bother with it on normal difficulty though. Hard+ difficulty changes the gameplay a lot though, requiring some more strategy and blocking.
Really? I thought it helped a lot when blocking against the satyr's staff attacks, for instance. Its just placed there as an option, just like some of Krato's other moves.
