Which one of these reasons do you play video games for? IT depends, for everyone it's a different story. I used to play video games for the fun of it, but now I am looking for other factors in games.

Graphics? This is the end of the term video game as I know it. I might as well watch a movie or sports on an HDTV. Saves me time instead of hurting my eyes on the latest graphics :[

entertainment/story/visuals I do not view playing games as fun... Really ruins its entertainment value to me... I view games as art. I do not view games as some run sideshow attraction or rollercoaster.

I would say "escapism" but to me, that seems like it implies an "avoidance" or "retreat from" reality, when I am merely "escaping" into these worlds to experience an alternate vision of reality as created by an artist. Like any movie or book, the person partaking "enters" the world, conforms to its "rules" and experiences an adventure or journey through the guise of it's characters. The feel connected to the characters and live out events as determined by the one who created it (unless it is a dynamic world).

They'll always be fun, but with that being a major aspect to it, it also keeps my mind busy. I guess more of an 'escape' as others have mentioned which pretty much keeps me sane.

I agree though I hate how most video games TRY to have good stories. And it just comes across as awful. I think if video games are even going to try to have "stories" they should actually put enough work into them to atleast be like a bad book. But I don't even see why we necessarily need stories at all.

I used to play games for sheer amout of fun,the challenges etc.But after playing L.A NOIRE,Batman AC I have to admit that there is something more to games than pure entertainment value. The devs are coming up with some great unique intrigruing stories, real life graphics and innovative gameplay. As a result the games are indeed becoming more engaging and interactive.

I'll agree that I play games to experience a good story (hopefully!) and to get entertainment value from fun. Improvement of skills? Not so much. For me, I'd say it's more about challenging myself; the satisfaction I get from defeating a superboss in an RPG, for example, makes all the hard work and preparation leading up to that point so worth it!

If its a game like Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic series, then its for the humor and the action and the storyline and the settting during the future or whatever.

Mass Effect I'm still curious about but I'm turned off by the whole sex with female alien thing that goes on in the Mass Effect games

Three reasons:

  • Fun
  • I enjoy seeing the creativity and hard work that's so apparent in a well made game. I like to see how the mechanics work, try to imagine how they came to the conclusion that was the best avenue to take, and how all components come together so well to create a seamlessly enjoyable experience. Basically I like to try to deconstruct it from a design perspective and see how it works and why.
  • Finally, to escape life. Yea, to be bluntly honest I like gaming to keep my mind occupied away from things that cause me stress. I hold no shame in admitting such.

Skills and fun. Story for me? Not so much especially in an FPS game. The one exception is Bulletstorm. The dialog and story are crass and cliched. I love it. He He.

Primarily for fun. games let us do things which we can't do in reality. what i look in for a game is an absorbing storyline.

For something to do in the evening. TV is completely unwatchable, and games are much more interactive and fun. And for the most part, they have better stories and characters than their non-interactive counterparts. And a whole hell of a lot less commercials.

All of them draw me to a game, but only the Story motivates me to see it through to the end.

1) Escapism

2) To get my mind in gear once awake

3) To relax within the evening

4) Enjoyment

5) To see if writers can draw me in emotionally

6) To kill time when not with a loved one

Many many reasons, the list could go on and on..
