While the final fantasy franchise is widely known and widely played it lacks the mainstream appeal and broad accessibility of a FPS or any straight forward action game.
It has less to do with the brand and more to do with the genre in my opinion. RPGs are simply less played across the board and are less appealing to people who just want to get into a game, blow some stuff up, make some progress and the turn the system off.
It will sell really well in comparison to other RPG offerings but standing up numbers wise to the more mainstream brand names is highly unlikely.
The choice to release FF content on the 360 is more than likely entirely related to the ps3 installed user base. Im not sure on how many units of FF13 they have forecasted to sell but they may have considered themself user limited based on a PS3 only release.
Coming out on both systems was a cheap and effective way to double the amount of people who would possibly buy their product. Its nothing more, nothing less.
I dont think Versus will take off unless the message gets out that its action based.

I gotta agree here. I'm a big FF fan, but the series doesnt have a fan base that is experiencing explosive growth. Will it be a success and bring in big profits? Absolutely. Will it smash through records set by GTA4 and others? Certainly not.
