I'm compiling a list of the most pathetic, anemic weapons and power-"ups" from a variety of games; top-down shooters, FPS, platformers, whatever.

For example, The Klobb from Goldeneye was horribly inaccurate and did terrible damage. You'd prefer your standard pistol for the most part. Mega Man's Leaf Shield also comes to mind.

What other weapons and upgrades felt more like downgrades to you?

Happy gaming,

Boz

You should add all the over-the-top weapons from Red Alert 3 and Uprising. Even though they're not suited to the original CnC universe, in any game a bear launcher (or whatever it was) was a fail.

Gentlemen? I present to you....... The Fallout Rolling Pin!

Rolling Pin.png

Just to bring you up to speed, does a maximum of 3 damage points with max melee skill, it is unable to do a critical hit, and breaks so damn easily. Even the standard BB gun does more damage. (THE DAMN BB GUN!!)

The crossbow from RE2 comes to mind. That thing was a joke, and you barely got any ammo for it.

There is a specialty laser pistol Protectron's Gazein Fallout 3 that manages to be weaker (it shoots laser bolts "shotgun") less accurate and have less ammo capacity than the standard firearm. It's a "prize" one quickly learns to discard.

You know, I almost mentioned that crossbows, in general, are awful in their respective games. I cannot think of a single crossbow that I've had where I said, "This is is awesome!" Maybe Diablo 3 will change my mind, but I have a feeling I'll be preferring an axe of magic.

That being said, there were a number of secondary weapons in the NES Ninja Gaiden that drove me nuts; the throwing stars for one. All I ever wanted was the flames that you shot. Contra was the same way: It was spread gun or nothing.

The Seeker Rifle in Dead Space 2. It's like a sniper rifle, but the game is NOT designed for sniper rifles! Anything you can hit with the seeker rifle you could of hit with any other weapon in the game. Having a zome in fuction in a game that's 90% shooting at charging monsters that leap out of vents and are quite often point blank in enclosed, confined spaces, it's pretty useless.

Much more effective weapons you could pick, even the gun you get at the start is more designed for the game then the Seeker Rifle.

I loved Half-Life 2's crossbow - there was something satisfying about pinning people to the wall whilst they weren't looking with that thing. But yeah, apart from that, crossbows have generally kinda failed in games. You'd think that they would be really useful, but they rarely ever work right.

I don't need to say anything. Well maybe the Bolt Gun from Killzone 2. It was fun to use sure but it was highly impractical.

And if we are gonna talk about Megaman Weapon upgrades. The Wild Coil can't hit anything in a straight line.

I love the crossbow in Perfect Dark. One shot kills. It's a little slow, but not too bad. The laser, however, sucks.

Well I still can't come to terms with the Reaper from Perfect Dark, myself. Besides my friends and family would just set up Laptop guns everywhere :/.

Weapon: combat knife.

Game: Every game with a combat knife as an actual weapon. (IE not used as an insta-kill mechanic ala CoD)

Many of the other James Bond games have a terrible Mini-SMG weapon as well, Nightfire's 32 shot Uzi ripoff comes to mind. As for some other lame video game weapons through the years, here are a few of my suggestions:

Needler: Halo CE

Sure, the homing shots were a nice novelty, but this joke of a weapon's laughable shot velocity and terrible damage make even a full clip's worth feel more like a flick to the recipent. The Flag is a more effective weapon.

Shotguns: Syphon Filter and Logan's Shadow

Shotguns in games have one single purportedadvantage: extreme stopping power at close range. Not only do Syphon Filter shotguns lack this one single advantage, in later games the bare handed MELEE ATTACK is more effective in combat, and this is a realistic melee punch that takes over eight wacks to down an enemy. In a game all about precision headshots, the shotgun has both rediculous spread, god-awful range(the shells disapear at about five feet) and rediculously low damage that will take multiple clips even at point blank range. The Shotgun, at least Logan's Shadow's incarnation, is the worst weapon I have ever used in a game, bar none.

I'd have to say the winner is "Eavesdrop" from CoD. I mean seriously this was pretty much useless, no one used it, and if you did use it odds are you'd only here the some jerk on the other team playing music into the mic.

Giving it some more thought, grenades have - in most titles - been pretty awful. You toss one out hoping to take down a big baddie, but in the end it never lands in the right place, bounces around a corner, or otherwise is impossible to aim.

I have yet to see a great implementation of just tossing a grenade. It needs a Zelda OoT targeting system or something.

I'm afraid you're wrong Sir. Grenades are mostly lethal and throwing them is an art. Few things are as satisfying as throwing a grenade from far away, making it bounce off walls, into a window and explode in the feet of your enemies only to watch them ragdoll out of the window moments later.

And the most useless weapon... is the glock.
