Well here's my dilemma; apparantly Assassin's Creed 2 is good, damn good and I want to play it, but I have not beaten the first Assassin's Creed, and from what I understand the story essentially takes off right where AC1 ended, now I care about story in my games so I would like to know what's going on when playing AC2, so I'm wondering if it is worth it to buy AC1 again, I owned it previouslyon the 360, but never beat it (I then sold it, I was maybe a quarter through).

Now I did enjoy what I played of AC1, I thought it was quite fun but I just didn't have the time to beat it, so I wouldn't mind playing it again sometime, now I could just read a story synopsis of AC1 and buy AC2 and be done with it, but I've done that before with other games and it just didn't fly. I can buy AC1 off Steam for $19.99, play that then buy AC2 after I beat AC1, or I can save $19.99 and some time and just read a synopsis of the story and buy AC2 without playing AC1, but I feel that would lessen the experience of AC2.

Opinions? Thanks.

Well since you said you've already played the first one a bit and you could read about the story online so it's up to you. I enjoyed the first AC and just skipped some of the more repetitive side quests.

I was in the same boat and decided to go through Assassin's Creed 1 before playing 2. I wound up not caring for AC1 very much by the time it was over and almost wound up returning Assassin's Creed 2. There was some stuff I liked a lot about it but the last 25% or so drove me nuts. But after spending time with 2, I'm glad I played through 1 because I feel it enhances the experience with 2. I'd recommend playing it but skip the optional quests unless you really like the game. If you just focus on the main quest, you should be able to get through it pretty quickly and onto Assassin's Creed 2.

I have Assassin's Creed 1 and 2. I didn't play the 2nd one because I wanted to beat the original first. It's worth the time put into it. The game is a lot of fun, and the side quests are challenging and fun too.

i liked AC1 at the very beginning too. it has some good mechanics that can impress early on. its just that those mechanics are never developed and they quickly become transparent and dull. sure, you may really like it (plenty of people did), but i wouldnt give any sort of enthusiastic recommendation.

Nor would I from what I've played, but I really want to feel the progression from the first to the second, how the mechanics were fleshed out and I want to experience the improvements from the first, not to mention the story. It's not like AC1 is a horrible game by an means, a very playable and fun game, it is just repetitious which I can see becoming annoying but I feel it may be worth it to play through AC1.

I'm in the same situation - I'm getting AC2 for christmas, but I don't think I will replay AC1 to actually finish it. I'm awful at finishing games as it is, and the repetitive missions in AC1 really put me off. I think I'll just start AC2 from scratch, else replaying the first one might kill the whole experience for me - and I certainly don't want a christmas present wasted! I guess it's up to you - If the story is important to you, you may as well give it a shot, but be careful not to tire of the style of gameplay incase it taints your first impression of AC2.

I personally found AC1 to be a top-notch AAA game and if you'd like to dive into the great conspiracy-fiction they made throughout Desmond and Altiar's part then I'd say go for it.

the first one is o.k i'd give it about 6.5/10 the second one will blow your mind, and you don't need to know the story from the 1st to understand the second because I don't know what the hell was going on in AC1

It would probably be much better just to play AC before ACII. The story is very important, and you get to experience the amazing improvement.

I think AC is a great game. Many people don't like it for being repetitive though.

Great gameplay, maybe a little repetitive but I don't really mind when it is this good.

Great story, great production value, very polished.

Shouldnt take too long to finish if you skip the optionals.

Go for it.

Replay the first, but do the minimum requirements for missions (3?) and pay Very Close Attention to the story.. heck if you need to write stuff down, then by all means! Nothing like going into a direct sequel being completely clueless..

Buying the original:
Assassin's Creed 1 - Yes, if u like hashashins, templars and Crusades!
No, if u do not like a bit of monotone games.

Assassin's Creed 2 - Yes, if u wanted a better "Assassin's Creed".
No, if u are a FOOL!

You can easily get caught up with the story of Assassin's Creed 1 and know what's going on for AC2. If you want, I could even explain all you need to know in a few sentences.

Looks to me like you answered your own question. Me? I beat the first AC, and honestly it was a struggle, all I wanted was for the game to be over, not because its a bad game, just crazy repetitive and I got very bored with it. Same goes with Viking Battle for Asgard for me. If you dont feel that you would get the same satisfaction by just reading about the first one, then by all means you should play it and beat it. It is a good game and all, I just dont think its nearly as good as the scores it recieved.
