I was just thinking about things every person who calls themselves a gamer should have done at least once.
....played a NES or Atari 2600
....played online
....owned more than a single console or console brand (ie. not a fanboy)

in my opinion u can't call urself a gamer unless u own more than 3 game and either a PC or a console or maybe a handheld
You're a gamer if you play video games on a regular basis end of the conversation. If you're a fanboy, retro, hardcore, casual, pc... gamer is another story
And for so long I thought I wasn't a gamer just because I played games!
This thread has shown me that I actually am a gamer.

Don't be picky guys you know what I mean. For example people who play those web based casual games can't be considered real gamers by our standards. If the criteria for being a gamer was to simply play games then everyone on the planet would fall into that category, and that just isn't right!

There is casual gamer, and there is hardcore gamer.
Casual gamers do what you said such as play stupid web games, and don't spend much time on the couch playing games. Probably don't even use online, or own more than one console.
Hardcore gamers take gaming seriously. They keep up to date on games, they play online, they own lots of systems, they like all the games, and they play a lot.
I can call myself a gamer if I am a person that plays games.
I have never played any of the old school Nintendos or really played any Mario game and i could care less if i ever dont....does that not make me a gamer?

Just because people don't own multiple consoles doesn't make them blind fanatics. On the flipside, lots of fanatics use the 'I own this and this' as a guise to cover up their fanaticism.
in my opinion, you are not a gamer unless you wacked off to a game character.....

Yes I agree with that. But it's not the end of the conversation.
I still think there would be some kind of criteria because I don't like the fact some gamers know nothing of what happened before, like, 2006. I don't like the idea that there was nothing, for some, before MGS 4, Halo 3 and GTA IV.
I don't like to see 12 year old kids begin their "gamer" life with an 360/PS3 without having the tiniest bit of experience and knowledge about gaming history. Or played some older consoles. Or at least seen some footage of what games used to look like.
Call me Old School!
Oh, and I hate fanboys... they're an insult to gamers.

I can't understand you. Why must a newborn gamer start playing classics, which are more valuable to oldschoool gamer,s when there are things like PS3/X360.
unless...
you've played Super Mario Bros. for the NES
BraunoftheDead
that is a real good way of finding out if a person is a true gamer really!!!!!
Madatory rules for being a "gamer" are both arrogant and stupid, in my opinion. I've been playing since the days of "The 7th Guest," the Sierra "Roger Wilco" games and "Dark Seed." I don't think that makes me any more of a gamer than people born 10 to 15 years later. Nor does having a preference for online vs single player games. Actually, I would argue that a lot of, shall we say, "veteran" gamers dislike online multiplayer games, in part due to the idiocy one has to endure as the result of people with mics who think they are comedians, or who fill the game with static, the sound of their television, burping or other moronic chatter.

Glad you agree.
If you're into video gaming enough, you should at least go back and play one of the games that started it all, at least once.
i agree with this but i have owned the NES, Sega Genesis, Sega 32bit add on, PS1, PS2, PS3 and have played WoW for about a year and CoH for about 3 years oh i have played Atari a couple times. I actually just found a bunch of Genisis games in the basement yesterday, cant seem to find the console though. You're a gamer if you play video games on a regular basis end of the conversation. @TC: Are you being completely serious? Sorry, I don't mean this in a rude way, but I've played games for 12 years, own 10 consoles and around 300 games. I haven't played a NES or an Atari 2600. Am I not a gamer? Once again, not meaning this in a rude way.

Actually it is more like, you won't call them a gamer unless they fit this criteria... which is ok by me. I'm glad you can call me a gamer. But on the other hand, they could have bought a PS2 with 'American Idol' sing along; A Wii: downloaded SMB off the VC and also played SSBB online once and still fit all your criteria. And to me, that would not be a gamer...in my opinion, you are not a gamer unless you wacked off to a game character.....

Does it count if I looked at a Tomb Raider Legend poster while I was....you know....:(?
A gamer is someone that is dedicated to gaming and it is one of his/her main hobbies...as far as I am concerned anyways.
I play games and keep up with the industry. So, I consider myself a gamer. I should think that would be the only criteria. Although, I'm not sure I agree with having to play an online game to be qualified as a gamer.Canvas_Of_Flesh
I think that if you keep up with games that are coming out, are familiar with each industry's capabilities/specialties, and play games for more than 10-15+ hours a week, then you are a gamer. Determining a gamer by what games he/she has played is a bit ridiculous. Obviously, if you play games you own some sort of gaming platform or a PC.
Let's see... my paren't bought us a Sega before Sega was "cool", we had all of the sonic games (even the pinball one) and the baseball ones and toejam and earl.
Now I own a ds and about 10 games for it, but I'm not really into shooting games. I like final fantasy and crono trigger though. And I have a wii and own about 5-8 games for it.
Whether or not this all makes a "gamer" idc. I talk about games a lot at work and have 75% convinced a co-worker to get herself a ds becuase she REALLY wants one and I think she would enjoy it.
Think of me as her enabler.
I found your criteria too centralized on your self'fish' and it stink!
In my 'ebook', your a gamer if you used the gears and games available at your time to complete a few titles.
Here's a few of my stinker ;
I used to play with an atari, a colecovision, intellivison and a commodore. Than in the late 80's it was the arcades! You just couldn't play at home a game like Punch Out! nor the race car that was round and turning right to left on 360 degree's! or was it 180? And the arrival of Mortal Combat! I was running at every arcade to find the new games. I must have spent a few thousands dollards in there. All the money I should have spent in college instead.
Suddenly it was 1995 and microsoft was launching it's new version of windows, and intel was launching it's pentium pro. Like many people, I had the sting for the beast, and I spent $3000 for a pentium 133 with 8 megs of ram. And I spent $75 to upgrade my ati mach64 from 1 meg to 2 megs! And that love grew bigger with the arrival of the Voodoo cards!
I sold my voodoo 5500 last year only.
What's a gamer if you don't throw lan parties at your place! Alright shut me off now!
So much great memories! Thank's, Now I know why I'm broken!

You can still be called a gamer even if you haven't done any of these things.

yes it counts, you are a true gamer.
You can't call yourself a gamer unless...........
-You have broken a joystick in an act of pure frustration.
-You have replaced joysticks that were 'worn out'.
-You OWN people on certain games.
-You have FINISHED no less than ten games.
-Your parents have warned you about wasting your life playing games.
-You have 'hung out' for the release of a game.
-If the game was good enough, you would pass on a night with Jessica Alba to play it.
