That ideal of what makes a gamer is pretty flawed. I play the 'casual' web games at times because I can't find a good router that I can afford so that I can play my 360 and Wii online, Wireless just isn't much of an option where I live, so I sometimes play the 'casual' games since I have to admit to having a fondness for puzzle games.
I've been gaming since 1984 and I wouldn't call myself hardcore nor casual, just a general gamer who doesn't lump myself into one catagory. If I see something that interests me, I play it, be it a 'casual' game or a 'hardcore' game, it never really matters to me as long as it's fun, lasts a while and has plenty of replay value.
So I don't play FPS, Bioshock bored me to tears even though the story was interesting, Halo bores me to tears and I can't be fussed with the FPS war games and Gears of War since they bore me rigid, that doesn't make me any less of a 'gamer', it just means I've got my own preferances. It's not the end of the world if one gamer doesn't fit into a neat little catagory.
There is no such thing as 'casual' and 'hardcore', all that does matter is if you enjoy the games or you don't. Such a waste of time and energy fitting people into easily defined slots.
