By 3D I mean you fight on a three dimensional plane, not just the character models and backgrounds are in 3D, but you fight on a 2D plane (i.e. Street Fighter 4). So what are your favorites? Here are mine:

-Virtua Fighter

-Virtua Fighter 2

-Tekken Tag Tournament

-Tobal No. 1

-Street Fighter EX alpha plus

-Virtua Fighter 5 (not legacy, but still amazing)

Tekken 2 and Virtua Fighter 2. One can argue that further editions improved each respective formula, but where I'm from these two were the games that were out at a point when arcades were still very popular.

The original Soul Caliber for Dramcast. I can never put my finger on quite what but there is definitely something special about this game. I like the weapons and combos, characters plus the single player campaign mode or whatever they call it.

Tekken 3 (Arcade, though played on PS2 via T5/PS1) and Tekken 5 (PS2)

Zatch Bell! Mamodo Battles (GameCube)- Yes, I'm putting an anime/manga based game, but I love it SO much.

Soul Calibur II (GameCube and played a bit of the PS2 version with my friends)

Soul Calibur 1,2, and 5

Dark Rift (an obscure 3D fighter for the N64. Not a great one, but one I enjoyed immensely as a kid.)

That's it... I'm a bigger fan of 2D fighters.

Soul Calibur is in the middle

my most dislked being Tekken , although I don't think its bad, just not A+ material like DOA or VF (or even B+ material like SC)

Tekken 3 springs to mind. I'm a Virtua Fighter fan however. Never really liked Soul Calibur tho.

Fighting games are not my favourite genre (though paradoxically, I play quite a lot of them) so I can only go on the ones that annoy me the least.

Virtua Fighter 4 - I like the enormous variety of moves and really beautiful moton capture. (the latter is also a strength of the Tekken series, but it doesn't play half as well)

Virtua Fighter 2 - Arguably hasn't dated that well, but was a complete revelation to me when I played it as a child. Nowadays, I still love the outstanding soundtrack, badass taunts/voiceovers and hilariously weird physics.

Dead or Alive 4 - Even the brutal AI in arcade and story mode has caused me a lot of hair loss, I just love how this game feels and plays and I like the factthat reversals are not half so easy to execute as in previous DoA games.

Soul Calibur I/II - I can't choose between these two. Again, a fighter that feels very natural to play and the extras/unlockable are aweseome and great fun. I agree with critics of the series thatthe moves vend to look very stilted and awkward on screen compared to VF and Tekken, butthis doesn't spoil my enjoymenttoo much.

I really must play Bushido Blade.

Just remembered another awesome 3D fighting game, Dragon Ball Z Budakai Tenkaichi 3. It is probably the best DBZ fithing game ever, and a very unique experience. If you're a fan you'll probably love it 10 times more.

My top 3? I have all the Tekkens and pretty much have all the other good fighters (3-d and 2-d). While Tekken 3 was the big hit, I believe Tekken 5 is the greatest fighting game of all time.

My other great 3-d fighting games are:

Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution

Def Jam: Fight For NY (so underrated)

Soul Calibur 2 is my favorite fighting game ever. I had hours upon hours of great multi-player fun with that one. I think most people like the first one more, but I had the second one before it.

I always seem to go back to Tekken Tag (PS2), it's Tekken 3 on steroids.

Though I go back and play all the Tekkens occasionally, only one I'm really not to fond of is T6 just didn't get me addicted like its predecessors did.

Soul Calibur series. And I like DBZ Budokai 3 and have enjoyed bits of Tekken 5.

I always thought I just hated fighting games, but after playing some good 2D ones I think I'm just not comfortable with that extra bit of z-axis.
