I have been gaming along time. To the point were when I am playing my Atari I am called granpa, and gaming hasn't even been around that long. Good grief. I have played each generation and have played or owned many systems with many games. Even those exspensive consoles like the Neo-Geo. However, when the Ps1/N64 era came around, I was amazed at how games evolved and a few things had amazed me, but of course, ther was a share of bad games as well. Let me get to the point here, when Ocarina of time came out, and I played it, I have to say that the perfect score it received made so little sense to me I came up with a theory. The theory is, while the PS1 was selling as fast as it was, people were playing less and less games on the N64 or paying attention to it. So while Nintendo fans saw this, they decided to overrate a few games on the system. THis would usually go unchallenged as people playing all those PS1 games would just ignore it. What eventually happened is that more and more fans got people to overrate the game to the point were stupid idiots that followed game reveiwers a little to much started overrating it to, and then it just go out of hand way before people started challenging if the game was as good as was being said. Of course, this attempt failed to sell hat many more N64s but it created In My Opinion the most overrated game of all time.

Now this is not a rant/blog/hate/troll or whatever post here. But I think Ocarina of time is not "Flawless" Has one of the most generic stories, and is extremely repetitive. I also think a lot of the dungeons are broing for making you do smillar things EACH TIME like torches or pushing blocks for one example. I also notice most people don't find the game "Epic" until after Link goes in the future. That's a pretty long way in the game don't you think?

But I am not going to go into a review of things I don't like about the game or the bugs and crap I see in it. Instead, I want to ask you, the reader, what's YOUR OPINION? Do you think The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time is some timeless flawless legend? Do you think it's overrated? Do you think there are alternatives like Spyro, Rayman, or whatever? Tell me, and if you can, add a little summary of why. Because I have yet to see actual reason why someone hates or likes this game.

I like it, and I do believe it's one of the best games ever made, but for me it's too difficult, and I personally prefer earthbound, spyro, rayman and lots of others over it, I might like it better if I could complete that doggone forest temple....

I put it up there with Zelda 1, ALttP, Chrono Trigger, Half-Life, Deus Ex, Okami, SMB3, SMW, etc as one of the absolute best games ever made. Your theory amused me though, I actually lol'ed.

Very good game that redefined the fantasy action adventure genre and had a profound impact on the gaming scene. GTA IV, Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 seem much more over-rated to me. Also Spyro and Rayman 2 are not to be compared with it but rather with Mario 64.

Spyro can easily be compared with it. As for your redefine comment, how did it redefine Fantasy Action Adventure games? You failed to explain this. Just asking, not attacking.

In a way it defined many of today's games, it was the first to include Z-targeting, what we know these days as targeting with L/L1/etc, in a way, it was really important for video game legacy.

Spyro is a platformer thus a bit different game. If you want a better comparison you could compare it to Soul Reaver.

It redefined those type of games by introducing the auto lock system, by pioneering the night and day shift and much more elemets that were deemed "revolutionary" back when the game came out (for example playing on the Ocarina, riding a horse, ect.).

It also had a very good dungeon design and a massive 3D world to explore. Most other remiscent console games at the time had only 2D sprites for background whereas OoT had a real 3D world.

Most people back then actually compared it to Final Fantasy VII although it's not really a RPG.

Auto targeting was not exactly NEW, it was implemented better. However, Zeldas auto targeting was terrible, and it was also pretty much the only way to control the camera as well. But remember this is my opinion now. As for Spyro, it had bigger 3D worlds and I do believe that they are more comparable than most, but we could also compare Zelda to Alundra or Medievil since the game I believe were actually the same exact genre as Zelda. Even if Auto lock was "NEW" is that a reason to call it one of the best games? Introducing stuff is fine, but it can fail as well as be good. For example, Guilty Gear 2.

It might not have been new but it was implemented in a way that many games to follow copied it. It certainly wasn't "terrible", that's just your opinion. The camera wasn't the best but it worked good enough considering there was no direct control over it.

I already mentioned many reasons why the game was considered so important back then.

And I honestly haven't heard anyone compare Spyro to OoT yet. Everyone I know says Spyro was the "Mario 64 of the PS1".

By the way, Final Fantasy VII is also considered one of the best games of all time but does that mean it's not if someone doesn't like it?

Think about it.

First I say it was my opinion, but then you speak as if I spoke of it as fact and said it WASN'T like it was a fact. Just hope that's not the message you're sending. Yu also failed to say how it could be the greatest game of all time. Important games is cool. But what do you play games for? I have been waiting for a gameplay answer from you. Important is good, but that's not a reason to me to see how it's gotten so many perfect scores for being a bit linear and having a few control problems. Ph, and I never heard anyone compare Spyro to Mario. Heck, I remember when Spyro wasn't even called a platformer by most people. Heck, at first it was only compared to crash because of the portals before people were like "Hmm, there is a lot more to compare here." But remove 25 jumps from Spyro and you have a magical adventure game. Unless of course, you compare it to Medievil.

I didn't say it's the greatest game of all time as I personally don't consider it to be. If many people consider it as such fine by me. If it's their sincere opinion I honestly don't see anything wrong on it. It just proves that the game managed to impress people very well.

I play games for fun and have a taste of my own.

I don't know what exactly do you expect me to tell to you about the game's gameplay. I'm not going in-depth simply because I don't have the will to dissect the game. May some fans write more detailed gameplay descriptions to you.

Perfect scores in general are nonsense in my eyes as no game can ever be perfect. Many other games like GTA IV also got a lot of perfect scores yet you don't complain about that which may suggest you just want to hate on OoT.

If you feel Spyro is the better game and may be compared to it - fine by me. Just don't call your opinion fact.

I didn't call my opinion fact, u indirectly did. Then you said I did after I clearly typed IN MY OPINION in full letters. I am asking you to tell me what made you like the game. You seem to be not able to understand this but there, I explained it better. What grabed your attention. I never said you thought it was the greatest game of all time, but why you think the game is very good or one of the greatest. It's because stuff like this happens all the time where the opposing person does not ever give an actual reason and that annoys me because you are giving a game such praise only because you followed another person, listened to reviewers, etc. That's why I asked why, because I want to know at least 2 people that like the game for a reason. A real one to. So, as I asked before, what aout the game seemed to suck you in? What made you think it's great?

You want my personal opinion about the game?

Well, I personally wasn't all that impressed by it because I played it rather late. I did, however, like the interesting cut scenes, the vastness of the game world (if a little empty in a way), the well thought puzzles (some weren't that great though), the interesting characters, the unsuspected moments, the well designed dungeons (some more some less), the sense of epicness, the amusing fighting system (game's camera felt a little broken though), the changing locations during day and night time (I didn't like how fast the day and night were changing though), the cool bosses, the transofrmation from young to adult Link, the interesting artifacts and upgrades, the solid graphics, the many secrets, ect. To sum it all up - I found it to be a very good, almost excellent game and I could imagine how impressive it was when it came out. Although I personally prefer Majora's Mask.

Maybe they got good scores because they were, you know, good games?

Many PS1 games also got good scores and I'm not sure if you can judge wherether those N64 games were over-rated. You may express you feel that way but that may not be a fact.

Well, at least you didn't think it was Flawless hee hee. Yes I see, finally, a rational explanation. I to prefer Majora's mask. But of course, I think neither is godly but of course we all have opinions. I however, am amused at some of the stupider one on the GS user reviews.

I never said only N64 had overrated games, but at the top for a couple months, older N64 game were suddenly being praised and hyped up for no reason, for example, Banjo-Kazooie didn't start out to well but got a bunch more sales after it was featured in a few magazines saying all this stuff about what Banjo could do that PS1 games couldn't even if it was a load of BS. But however, it's only a theory.

However, it's true that during the time Mario 64 came out the PS1 didn't really have a real answer to it. Crash was more of a "2.5D" platformer and not really comparable. You had to wait till Spyro to get your "PS1's Mario 64".

Hah, it amuses me how nearly everytime I come into one of these types of topics, there's always some sort of "heated debate" going on instead of going with the actual question at hand. It's so predictible. Anyway, I remember when I first laid eyes on OOT in the rental shop, for I wasn't expecting its release at that time. So I rented it, brought it home and loved it to bits and pieces. Over time it was given to me as a gift and I completed so many playthroughs, it's not even funny. But at this point, when I look back upon every Zelda game I've ever played, while OOT is definitely an amazing one at that and undeniably planted an entirely new seed for the Zelda series, it isn't my favorite whereas A Link to the Past is. But I wouldn't mind coming back to OOT in the future and giving it another go, it's really a terrific game.

I've played many games in my life, and this has to definitely in my Top 10, most likely Top 6, since I have a pretty diverse gaming setup. I love OOT, the music, story, colors, weapons, feel, smooth, enlightening. I can go on. :D

Well my OPINION on the game is: That the story is highly generic with a bunch of filler in it to make it longer, and you end up doing the generic "COLLECT THE ____ TO DO ___ TO SAVE ___" Twice in the same game. I Believe the camera is just terrible and the Controls (Controller aside) need work. Especially the target system which doesn't really TARGET the TARGET and you miss quite a bit and that can be annoying, even at close range. Then again, you can't control the camera at all. I believe all the characters have no personality except Zelda. This is because she seems to be the only one that actually evolves during the game. Link is just link, and the others have generic personalities. Ganon was even thrown at you to be the bad guy and had you predict what would happen at the beginning of the game, and you ended up being right. I Believe time travel is not EPIC, and it was not EPIC when link grew a few feet taller and looked older. Because to some players, that makes the game SO MUCH different that it's one of the main reasons to play the game. The game reaks of several puzzles that I swear the "Wonder Boy" Series already used but was considered new by fans. I believe that the weapons have been seen before and are not impressive. I believe that, like Mario 64, despite the attention of big enviorments to explore, there is nothing to do in them. Also with this exploration come linearness since following the story it will ALMOST always point you to go straight to the next area without any actual exploration. You can fit 25 Hyrule fields in Rayman and Spyro. Not impressive, since almost every other place is linear. I believe that certain colors and designs of the enviorment, inclusing mountains, and building with a few exceptions are horribly bland. Movement is a bit clunky, but it's ok. Boss' can rage from hilariously easy, to unfair until you realize they are hilariously easy. Navi does not help in any way shape or form with only like 3 exceptions. A person with a brain can get a better hint by themselves, Navi will basically just tell you what the person that sent you out on a mission told you and provide no advice, location, or hints. Dungeons look bland, some look the same, some use the same kind of puzzles, some have enemies appearing in the dumbest places, some are badly designes. Going inside of a creature may be interesting but in this game, it is not fun. There seems to be a lot of talking and cutscenes but not enough gameplay. If you replaced Link and Zelda with different characters with the exact same game, the game would have much lower sores. and probably more. But remember that's MY OPINION. Although I prefer Majora's mask, it suffers from almost all of these same problems. Almost. Oh, and the horribly quick day to night thing. And the random zombie looking things. Awkward.

Oh, and the only Zelda game I have even came back to was Links Awakening. Because almost all these problems didn't exist. (Almost) But I will say it is a decent game, and better than Mystic Ninja Featuring Goemon.

How is there nothing to do in Mario 64? Can you elaborate that?

And Majora and Ocarina are very different games despite using many familiar characters and objects and sharing the same gameplay mechanics.

A genre defining game that was surpassed by all its successors.

Awesome game. Love it. But I love Wind Waker even more. When OoT came, it was huge, beautiful, funny, charming, mysterious.. just an allround sweet Zelda game. And for the first time, in 3D. Could've sucked, but turned out awesome.

IMO the best out of the 3D games, though I prefer the top-down games best.

One of the best games ever, but not as good as Majora's Mask. It's easily in the top 10 games ever, though.

REmake for the GC is still a very good game. But it's not really comparable to Ocarina.

I've never owned Ocarina of Time, but I did play it, I thought it was great, but not really the best game ever made. Perhaps I should get it on the Wii's VC so I can finish it this time.

Yeah, the whole game must be played in order to make an accurate judgement. I'll admit the first few hours are kinda meh.

I never played it, I played Majoras Mask and loved that (only Zelda I played besides the one for SNES)... I had alot of fun with Majoras Mask and many people tell me it is the better game anyways. I think the reason OoT got the better reviews is because it came out first maybe and defined 3D action adventures. I want to try OoT someday as its pretty cheap for N64 and maybe I will try it this summer when I am done with finals. I won't get my hopes real high because I tryed FF7 off psn and it was honestly one of the biggest disappointments I had and I couldn't even finish it. (I liked 9 alot more) I am sure that OoT still can offer some enjoyment but I doubt it is still by modern standards the best game (judging my gameplay videos)

I believe The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time IS one of the best games ever made. It's not my favorite however (that title belongs to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past). I do think LoZ:OoT is flawless in every way! I never experienced any issues with my multiple play throughs and it's the time of game I want to play again and again.

Actually it didn't define **** Just like the BS that Nintendo made the analog stick. It was overrated with other games because they needed N64 games to sell, while indirectly affecting other games. These other games then were so lethaly underrated, that some of you may not have know they existed, hence why most people say the same 8 games when asked what the best N64 games were.

If you think it's flawless you are mentally unstable. Just the Z-targetting itse;f is a fail for you missing a slow moving target. In fact, the Z-target actually doesn't target the actual target. I is also a horribly slow paced game with a big world but the game guides you in a very linear way. The auto jumping has no real control, and etc. etc. etc. It's not whether YOU think you haven't had any problems but everyone know those problems happen everytime and if I hear one more person call the game flawless and complain about the freaking water temple one more time....

It's a great game but not the best Super Mario Bros 3 and World hold that title.

I'm playing through the game, for the first time, right now. So I have a pretty dang fresh perspective on it. And so far, I have to agree with the original poster. I just don't get what the big deal is. It's probably because I just haven't gotten far enough into the game yet. I'm in the dungeon that's inside of a giant fish in Zora's Lake and about to get the 3rd Spirit Stone. But so far the whole thing just seems very blah. Nothing is standing out for me, and I'm not getting that same sense of a grand-adventure that the 2D Zelda games gave me in the past. Oh, and I hate the controls. I hate that every other move Link does is done automatically.

Quite underwhelmed so far, especially considering the greatness of other Zelda adventures. I'm hoping things get better as I get further.

Fans will boast the time travel mechanic for no reason at all. It really isn't that amazing because i know this will spoil for you but once you turn to an adult, you have to do the same thing your doing now AGAIN. With more bland empty environments.

Why isn't he allowed to find it flawless? It's his opinion. I could find Superman 64 flawless and you couldn't say I can't.

Posts like these make me think you're just some anti-Nintendo fanboy.
