I don't think I can go beyond five. And in no particular order:

Last of Us

The Last of Us is probably the most polished and least-flawed example we have of a narrative video game. It's not the most innovative, it's just one of the best executed narrative games. Some of the best performance capture in the industry. The performances don't have a cringe-curve because characters are really grounded and realistic. The characterization is really sophisticated and subtle for a video game. Naughty Dog have created a system that gives you weapons and ammunition based on what you already have, so that they can easily manipulate how tense a certain part of the game will be. If you already have a lot of ammo, you might be lucky to get a single bullet from killing an infected. It's brilliant. And on top of that, it's not afraid of downtime. There are some great quiet moments in the game that you can speed through if you want, or slow down and explore the environment, taking as much time as you need.

Silent Hill 2

This game uses metaphor better than any other game I've played. It has maybe the best soundtrack in any game. Akira Yamaoka has an amazing ability to create a unique atmosphere that immerses you intensely into the experience. It knows exactly how much to give you and how much to hold back. You're never shown so much that it becomes less tense than it's supposed to be or less disturbing than it's supposed to be.

Metal Gear Solid 3

Camp as heck, but dramatic and tragic at the same time. Not a common combination. Unprecedented freedom to approach a situation any way you want. A soundtrack that brilliantly combines a feel of the sixties, the jungle, and mischievousness. Overpowered tranquilizer gun though. Poor vocal performance from the Boss, even though she does have a weary-sounding voice that does fit the character.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Incredible world. Everything is brilliantly designed. The soundtrack places you in the world very strongly. It has social sequences that are more dramatic and tense than any other game I've played. The hub locations are brilliant. They're dense with stories and items and areas you can go snooping around in. Hacking is overpowered. The plot is not tidy at all (I think Mankind Divided did a better job of its main plot). The bosses are awful and contradict the design of the rest of the game. The pacing in the directors cut is AWFUL since they shoehorned in the DLC parts into the main story. Such a horrible idea. I hope there's a mod out there that can cut the black site mission out. The social commentary is very shallow. There's actually not a lot of interesting dialogue regarding transhumanism. The best I could remember was the line from Taggart about how replacing yourself with robot parts is like indulging your insecurities. But I actually thought the ending was really meaningful. I don't understand why people are so averse to an ending that presents you with a few buttons to press. There's a lot of meaning in those buttons, and you can debate which button was the correct one to press forever.

Tetris

Tetris is probably number one to be honest. It's the distilled essence of what a game is. It's the bible of games. It's about sorting seemingly random chaos into order. It has perfect balancing. It speeds up based on how quickly you are gaining points. It's the best example of a game that's easy to learn but impossible to master. Which is Nolan Bushnell's criteria for a good game.

As far as all time and mix of personal choice and what I believe everyone should at least play, if not beat:

1. Last Of Us (Modern level graphics, amazing story, great gameplay, unique spin on the typical zombie)

2. Zelda OOT (Obvious reasons. Great for kids)

3. Halo (Any of them really but 1 is what started the story. Shooter game with a good story, fairly modern graphics, great controls and top 2 choice for multiplayer during it's time under bungie. Great for kids)

4. Portal (Very unique use of physics and great way to play a shooter without the violence. Great for kids)

5. Super Mario Bros (Obvious reasons. Easily could be #1 or 2 but just a personal choice. Great for kids)

6. Bioshock (One of the best stories/environments/shooters for the modern era)

7. Starcraft/ Diablo 2 (Both have great stories, both are classics, Both had/have great multiplayer. The choice between them depends if you prefer medieval or futuristic. Great for kids)

8. GTA V (Considered one the best, if not the best modern game available between the story, gameplay, multiplayer, great side activities and variety)

9. Journey (Gives a very different feel and message than every other game. Especially if you have the opportunity to play online with others. Great for kids)

10. Silent Hill 2 (more of a personal choice. Very dark and twisted story, environment, characters and very off putting/frightening. Not great for kids.)
