Quake's 15th Birthday Game NIght - June 22 Discussion Thread

This thread is for your questions, excitement, or for practicing with other GameSpotters before this game night!

Note: Anything question in orange font needs to to be updated. 

1. How do I get in on the action?
We'll be sharing which Quake will be playing in the coming weeks. We want to make sure everyone has the same version of the client.  

2. I am from another country and timezone other than California time (Pacific Time). What time is that for me?

We might have tons of lag playing with each other, but why not see how bad it is?Go to this url http://www.timezoneconverter.com/cgi-bin/tzc.tzc to see what time it is in your country. If you want to be extra tech savvy and you use Firefox, download the foxclocks application to monitor your timezone versus other timezones.

3. What mode will we be playing?

Well, it kind of depends on the client we end up using. I'd like to find the forefather of Rocket Arena, known back then as Rager Arena, but so far it's been difficult to find. We'd also like to see if Team Fortress QuakeWorld is around, so there's some research we need to complete, and if you have any suggestions, please share them! 

4. Why this game? Why not another one?
Because it's Quake's 15th birthday! We also might play the new Duke Nukem Forever, so feel free to share if you'd like to play both of them on June 22! 

5. Can I drop by a little late to participate in game night?
Of course! Why not? Just make sure you join the chatroom so we know that you exist. 

6. What GameSpot folks will I be playing with?
This hasn't been cofirmed just yet. I'm sure as we get closer, more interest will build among editorial staff. 

7. What's this week's bounty requirement?
The non-scientific method.Get yourself noticed by either being a star player on a staff member's team or fragging them a lot in the game!

8. I am totally the best, and you know it. What if you give the emblem to some other dude, even if I know I am better?
It's the staff call on who becomes the MVP for the week.

9. So, do I have a good chance of kicking GameSpot butt?
Depends who you're playing. I doubt you'll be as good as me.... ;) 

10. Do I get an emblem for playing?
This is a birthday celebration game night, so of course you should get a special emblem for participating!

11. Where should I report my game night experience?
The game has a way to record the matches, take screenshots and post your reactions to came night in this board. Someone may use the information and post it in the game night report hread that will be created after game night is over.

Here's what I'm researching right now, and asking some old school friends on where stuff is.

1st, the Quakeworld client. I think these days it's easier for people to play QW rather than NetQuake, even if my skills laid mostly at the netquake side of things. I could always feel something wasn't right playing on Quakeworld servers... but hey, that never stopped me from playing Team Fortress QuakeWorld!

2nd, where can get QuakeWorld Team Fortress? It has to be around, somewhere!

3rd, I've gotta find the Nacho Rage Arena map. This was one of my favorite maps, and had a spectator's area. Definitely not going to be nearly as fun if I don't get to share this awesome map with all of you who never got to play it for not being on the West coast servers like kitty1.stanford.edu. It's a West Coast Quake gamer thing, but OHHHHH so much fun. 

4th, anything else you guys want to play? Like a favorite mod of some sort back in the day? 

5th, want to check out some total conversions too? Man, the original X-Men Total Conversion was THE BOMB!

A better question is: can those who don't have the game/platform required for the game night get the emblem by joining the chat and watching it live to celebrate the 15th birthday with everyone?

i think Jody is talking about playing some old mod or map on original quake. i dont know what that is, i tried browsing for it but there are soo many patches and updates to make the original quake run online, plus all the sites having these files are dead. i am still clueless about Team Fortress and Rager Arena map

You can get the QuakeWorld client from id's FTP (ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quakeworld/). There's also a deathpack1u.zip and q1edge.zip map pack and some ctf mod, haven't tried those out yet. Edit// Hm nvm, I can't seem to get it running on Windows 7. So er, QuakeLive? XDphazer

thats what i was talking about. you need several compatibility patches to run it in never systems. Quake runs smooth on Win 2000/me/nt. but not on xp/vista/7 

We have low turnouts quite often for popular, current, console games. I really hope we don't needlessly complicate things by not playing Quake Live. If we are we at least not some information about how to get it best working and what we will be doing early on, not the day of or day before the game.Legolas_Katarn

i agree with this. we culd use some info now to make arrangements, than jumping last minute

Well, I might be watching the webcast but I would also like to play. We just need to download the game and play it on our PC right? Like what you said in the emblems about being able to play by just downloading it.tmaclabi

Lol was just looking through some old CDs and actually found my original quake CD from 1996. I have no idea why I kept it. Took a little bit to get running on single player, now Ill see if I can get the multi going. Hope this is still on it will be more then amusing.

Any of you try these free shareware versions yet?

I was doing some testing today, and I need to finalize a zstep by step process on how we can join servers togehter, etc. 

Also, the steam version already has Quakeworld, and GLQuake installed. So, if you have it on there, let me know.

A friend gave me this listing of QuakeWorld related servers.

Feel free to try some of them out, but keep in mind that some are TeamFortress or other modifications.

I and bunch of my friends tried the freeware version some time ago. Works fine as good as original Quake.

System requirements are a laugh so I guess everyone should be able to join. 

The game is not much heavy so it works fine even with Dial-Up ineternet. Another plus point. 

The server on the site seemed pretty much dead. It is working but no one is coming up there for matches so I haven't played much of multiplayer. Also one of my friends was unable to connect to the server. Maybe we can try more servers. I will try some servers of you posted and get back ;)

I have GLquake at the moment, but I don't have Steam Quake. While I am excited beyond words at the chance to get fragged by some GS staff, I'm not even sure I will be able to attend. What time of day does the mayhem start?

Something to consider - I know it's getting awful close to the day of the event, but can a second time of day be available? I'm pretty sure I will be working down here in Australia. 

Even better - if no game version has been decided yet, why not delay until the weekend when more people would be available to play?

I'd download a freeware version by then, if only temporarily, for that, no problems. I have all the Quake 1 and Quake 2 games so it would sadden me to miss this. Haven't played in Game Night since Left 4 Dead.

Just tried out some quakeworld against some bots...lol they were kicking my ass for awhile. There aim was ridiculous but good fun.

Question: What is the time for Game Night? And who from GS staff will be playing?

I am yet to try those servers 

Is this thing still happening? It's awfully last minute, and I haven't seen any official guidance as to what client is being used or instructions for connecting to the appropriate server. Or am I just an old fart and have no idea how any of this stuff works anymore?

...ok so we know WHAT we'll be playing....but, and i'm not home yet so I hope I make it home in time, how to find each other? Also, should we just use our GS names so we all know who's who?

 Also how late will it go till?
