Today I bought Titan quest(because I was bored). I brought it home and opened it up to install it. The game asks me for a CD key and I begin to look at the manual for it. On the back there's a little box labeled "Titan Quest Install Code" and its empty, blank. I can't even install the game.

So I call THQ tech support. Its a friggin answering machine! "We are sorry but we are revamping our phone system, please excuse us for the trouble... you can e-mail us at support@thq.com or leave a message at the beep". So I e-mailed them and haven't heard a thing.

So I huffed and puffed my way back to Wal-Mart to the customer service counter just to have them tell me "we can't take any opened software due to copyright laws". I never heard of this before. If that's the case  then how can people "trade" in their games and not violate this law? Someone explain this to me please and if you can advise me with my issue that would be cool too.

First off....WalMart is evil.

Second, places that do not sell "used" games usually have a policy about taking back opened games. There is usually a time period of "x" amount of days where you can return or exchange anything that you buy at any store. All I can say is keep fighting and never give up! I would send an e-mail to everyone...Walmart, the game support center and call the 1-800 numbers too. Don't forget you as the consumer have rights and WalMart will try and treat you like you have none. I've been down this road before and I came out on top....so will you.

I sorry you can't install it. And your question about trading in games, is that yes you can do it, but like guild wars and EA games they will ban your accounts. Most companies hate it when you trade in games because they lose money and sometimes they will take action against it. But Gamestop and EB-Games do not take used PC games, so they don't get in trouble. They only take hand held and console games, which requires no CD codes. One time, my friend bought Guild Wars on EBay, and when he installed it and created an account, the creator's of Guild Wars deleted the account within 24 hours. This is because your not really buying it from the publishers, but from the person who's selling it. It's basically resale, which companies dislike most of the time. Store's can sell the items since they are given permission. What you could do however, is to call the company everyday and see if they have the phone fixed, or you can stand by your email waiting for a response. Did you call the publisher or creator? you should call both. Most of the time you call the publisher, like for AOE, I called Microsoft, the publisher, no help. Then I called Ensemble Studios, the creator, and i got a lot of help from them. I hope you can install your game soon. Also another simple idea is to buy the game again. After you have installed your new copy, wait to you get the CD key from the publishers/creators/ or some other place and give the CD key and game to a friend for their B-day or Valentine's Day.

Yeah I tried calling IronLore and they said they said THQ is responsible for Customer Service. Yes i could just buy another copy, but now that I'm getting the run around I don't want to give these people my money again after bad service. Its like tipping a waiter that spilled coffee on your lap.

Even IF I get a response, I bet the only way to resolve it would be to ship the game back to them and wait 2 weeks or more for a new game, and that's looks to be a big IF . =(

Yeah its funny how Wal-mart seems to have different policies with every store. Some people say they could return it, others just exchange, and then there's some like me who are screwed and get nothing. Remember back in the day when things were simple?

I think the moral is: Never buy videogames from somewhere that sells breadmakers and scatter cushions. Wal-mart sounds like hell on earth.

Don't buy anthing online from Wal-Mart. I recommend just buying from the actual store. Online purchases are the same situation at most retailers.

They don't take them back because they figure you copied the game and want to get your money back, not because of copyright rules. They should allow you to exchange it for the same game, though. I hear you about not wanting to give THQ the money, but there's really not much you can do about it.

I don't know of anywhere that you can return and opened software purchace. That policy has been in efect for many years for all stores, Walmart, Best Buy, Comp USA, Circuit City...etc. As far as the whole "used" games thing goes thats only console games. No used PC games. I have had my fair share of bogus games purchaes... but have come to realize its not the stores fault. Blame it on the publisher.

Exactly, most stores have the policy that you can only exchange opened software, cd's, and dvd's for the same product. Just go back to Wal-Mart and say it doesn't work (which it doesn't because you can't install it) and ask for another copy. Usually, I find Wal-Mart has one of the most forgiving return/exchange policies.

I usually prefer to buy from Future Shop/Best Buy or EBGames, ever since buying Deus Ex: Limited Edition from Wal-Mart (they meant Limited as in an extended demo!!!).

That said, I've been very impressed with Future Shop... I bought Star Trek: Legacy, hated the game, then exchanged it for Medieval II: Total War. The customer service person said that they usually didn't do exchanges on open software, and gave me no reason why this should be an exception, but did it anyways.

As has been said above, policy seems to differ from store to store, even among the same franchise...

So, in short, keep pestering those blasted Wal-Mart people. They gave you a defective product, and it's your right as a consumer to have the issue resolved. Maybe you'll finally get through to one of them.

As a retail manager at a large retail chain I see this all the time. The issue is this, Based on copyright laws in effect they will only  exchange a game for the same game. This is because there is software out there that lets you bypass any cd/dvd burning security on the disc(s). Now if you are having a true episode of bad discs or its scratched then they would exchange it BUT they have to open it. They open it so you can't resell it or return it to another store with the receipt that you have. It protects the retail chain and the publisher / developer from losing out on money twice.
