This is simple plain, undeniable fact, folks. Scientifically proven. In fact, all that Ocarina of Time really is is a reskinned ALttP made in polygonal 3D (and even then, it fails at being the best 3D Zelda).

The superiority of A Link to the Past is demonstrated by the fact that it actually laid down the foundation for every single series convention, that have been mindlessly followed since. This includes structure of the story, world design, dungeon design, the two world mechanic, as well as recurring series themes such as the Master Sword and Kakariko Village.

A Link to the Past also had some of the best dungeon design, with the Ice Temple, Turtle's Rock and Ganon's Tower in particular being devllishly hard. It also had some really ingenious items, as well as excellent ways to use them. The bosses were incredible, and while Link looked like a n00b, he controlled like a dream (although admittedly, the combat could have been better in this game).

Ocarina of Time was an incredible game, folks, no doubt about that. But its brilliance pales in the luminous ingenuity of the beacon of incredible game design that is known as A Link to the Past.

Nope. The game released on the Super Nintendo in 1991 (although it did get a later re-release on the GBA)

I should play ALTTP again, I have not in a long time. I'm not sure how it would hold up now.

I do agree OOT gets way too much spotlight though.

It holds up remarkably well. I speak from experience, having played A Link to the Past in December.

My opinions are subject to change, however. It is entirely possible that when I play Ocarina 3D, I change my mind to some degree.

Indeed, I wonder what you were doing to be hit by a tsunami to begin with :P
I'm glad you got out okay and with (hopefully) minimal damage, though I lament your loss of your GBA games
I recommend you play it again, it's available for cheap on the Virtual Console.

Also, what's, er.... wrong with handheld games?

A "wrong place, wrong time" saying comes to mind, place being hotelroom on the beach, ground floor and time being during the largest tsunami in recorded history.

The loss of my games was in fact the most tragic thing to happen to me personally that day, which is saying a lot.

The problem with handhelds are simple. They are tiny, they are poor and they are primitive. I want my games on a big screen with a comfortable controller with some good surround sound. Not something so small I'm in danger of swallowing it.

I'm playing Ocarina 3D now, I got only sand temple and the ending left. The good and bad are mixed. 3D is nice, but gyro is nicer, and they don't work well together. In general, pushing L and R at the same time on the 3DS is a pain in the ass, it craps my hand, the shape of the DS and 3DS don't seem to work well with things like that. With 2 touch screen buttons, 2 physical buttons and ocarina always on screen, it is nice essentially having access to 5 items at once. The game feels 99% the same though, with gyro being nice, but rest of the controls being not as nice as N64 (at its time) or GC version.

Sorry Charizard, I am afraid I disagree with you here again. A Link to the Past is not superior to Ocarina of Time.

In fact, I cannot figure out any aspect of Ocarina that is inferior than any aspect of A Link to the Past.

Nostalgia is blinding you, for AlttP's combat is atrocious, navigating the overworld is a pain, the dungeons are short and confusing, and they couldn't even get Link's hair color right, despite being right in the manual

Sure, AlttP introduced some of the best music in the early series, but it cannot compete with what Ocarina brought to the Zelda soundtrack.

Not only that, the overworld in Ocarina is not made out of square sections like in AlttP. Ocarina felt like a real world, AlttP felt like a mess you had to clean up.

And compared to Ocarina's story, AlttP's story is almost laughable. Pure generic fluff compared to the innovative (for gaming at the time) plot of Ocarina.

AlttP isn't even the best 2D Zelda.

As much as I enjoy OoT and MM, I disagree. Here are some reasons with I think about all three games:

 1. ALTTP had more to explore (both light world and dark world) OoT you travel the same Hyrule with little changes and Termina field wasn't very big than Hyrule, but other locations such as the swamp, mountain, ocean, and canyon sections were a bigger improvement over.
 2. There were more enemies to fight in ALTTP. OoT Hyrule field  felt dead unless it was the evening and as Adult link, there were no enemies at all but just 10 big poes. MM improved what OoT had, but those jelly's respawning was annoying.
 3. Although the amount of dugeons are even between OoT and ALTTP, MM felt very short yet relied on the side quests and human interaction more.
 4. In terms of story out of the three, MM had the best and most dark story ever which kept the game from being a disappointment.
Those are some of my reasons, come at me :P

Don't be hating on handhelds, buddy. They are anything but primitive, considering that quite a few advances in gaming- including touch screen- have come from handhelds. Plus, with headphones, they provide good surround sound. Ultimately, I think your preference for consoles over handhelds comes down to just that- preference.

I disagree. The dungeon design was genius, and ALttP had the best overworld of any game in the series. The music in this game was head and shoulders above Ocarina's, and while it's story was definitely simple, that wasn't really the point, as A Link to the Paststands out simply because of its gameplay.

Really? I've heard nothing but good things about both the controls and the 3D.

I'll be getting my copy of the game soon (hopefully), so I'll be able to see for myself soon!

Link's Awakening did far more for the progression of the series than A Link to the Past ever did: turning the big key into solely a way to get to the boss, making the compass show chests, the trading quest, the magic instrument as well as a general focus on music (don't say it was in LttP, because it was a flute to summon a bird and nothing more; that's like counting the horse call in TP as an instrument), having more than one button mapped to your inventory, the ability to actually use your shield......the list goes on and on.

oh, and Link's Awakening introduced combat into the series that wasn't terrible or archaic or made the game harder than it should have bee. the only way people can say A Link to the Past is fantastic today is with some serious wool pulled over their eyes from pure nostalgia. it's aged better than Zelda I and II, but it's still a mess by today's standards

Twilight Princess has far more similarities to A Link to the Past than Ocarina ever did. it's a **** argument pulled out by people who just like to hate on the most popular game in the series so they can feel different

I could fit more than 4 DS lite in just one of my video cards. No handheld will ever come close to providing the experience you can get from a full fledged gaming system. It's an alternative when you are away or travelling, but thats it.

Touchscreen isn't a handheld only thing. I've been playing touchscreen games on one of my laptops since 2007. And headphones do not provide good surround sound, come on. They can provide accurate surround, but you can't honestly think some things you cover your ears with can compete with a 5.1 or 7.1 surround with a good amplifier and speakers.

You're right, it is a matter of preference. I prefer quality over portability.

Also OoT>Any other Zelda game.

Right, Minish Cap is so much better and more innovative than Link to the Past. Link to the Past back then did everything I figured a sequel should do to the original, bigger and better than the original, but it just felt like Legend of Zelda with a bigger world. Minish Cap overall is much more innnovative and brought more than 2D Zelda, so Minish Cap>Link to the Past.

I am actually in such a chair, but the game has enough trouble keeping full 3D with the flimsy top screen not shaking slightly while moving.

And you can't possibly go into facts only opinions. I'm not saying either one here is wrong, but comparing which game is better falls onto nothing but opinions.

Someone brings up review scores, reviews are opinions. Someone brings in sales, sales are factual evidence of a game's success or not, but don't determine the quality of the game either. So in the end, we do nothing but compare points and opinions about said games.

Now prove to me how it's better with facts.

Link to the Past rocks, maybe my nostalgia goggles are a little thick when it comes to Zelda but I have to agree with Charizard. It was a very meaty game, had tons to do, looked great. was 2D "2D makes everything better"

The superiority of A Link to the Past is demonstrated by the fact that it actually laid down the foundation for every single series convention, that have been mindlessly followed since. This includes structure of the story, world design, dungeon design, the two world mechanic, as well as recurring series themes such as the Master Sword and Kakariko Village.charizard1605

Doing something first doesn't automatically make it better implemented.

Also, these:

Minish Cap>A link to the Past come at meLuxen90

Who cares? Super Metroid or Metroid Prime are better than both. ;)Teufelhuhn

what is this blasphemy

the objective truth, considering the improvements made to Ocarina's combat in its sequels have been minimal, and A Link to the Past was hugely improved on in a handheld sequel

Twilight Princess>A Link to the Past? Now I've seen everything.

Laugh, because there is no way you can possibilty counter that without going into nostalgic reasons.

Now prove to me how it's better with facts.

i voted for charizard to get thrown out, but he could say LInk to the Past was more innovative and be totally right :P

won't someone PLEASE think about that framerate!

LttP has the best overworld, boss fights, and secrets of any Zelda.

(still have not played Minish Cap or the Oracles though)

the actual order is LttP>MM>LA>OoT>WW>TP.

these aren't in any order outside of their categories

Great:
Majora's Mask, Link's Awakening

Good:
Ocarina, Wind Waker, Oracles

Mediocre:
A Link to the Past, Twilight Princess, The Minish Cap

Bad:
Zelda, Zelda II

Okay, I think it's finally time I played LTTP to completion.

And once I'm done, I'm going to come back here and explain exactly why you're wrong.

No, you judged them by G standards... which honestly.. I'm surprised any Zelda made it past mediocre.

Now judging by "modern" standards is ludicrous. If that were the case, Zelda TP would be high up. I had a tutorial, it was lengthy, it may have no voice acting (but what Zelda does?) yet it still featured darker grittier graphics like today's modeern games and all that jazz. So you sir fail, and your list of opinions is fail. FACT!

/thread.

No but seriously... your list makes babies cry G.
