 Click the smiley.
This has surpassed all of my expectations. I expected something high but damn, not that high.
So...I'm guessing the hype-o-meters for GTA IV have reached a fever pitch for everyone else here too eh?

"The series cheered (and criticized) for glorifying violence has taken an unexpected turn: it's gone legit. Oh sure, you'll still blow up cop cars, run down innocent civilians, bang hookers, assist drug dealers and lowlifes and do many, many other bad deeds, but at a cost to main character Niko Bellic's very soul. GTA IV gives us characters and a world with a level of depth previously unseen in gaming and elevates its story from a mere shoot-em-up to an Oscar-caliber drama."
If this is true, and not just IGN being dumb like they so often are, then I'm going to have to get this game. And I absolutely hate GTA.
Why is it that everytime a popular game like GTA or Halo receives a score like this, people automatically scream "overrated"? I mean, you haven't even played the game yet...that's a pretty bold assumption to make about it without having played it for even a second. :?While I can't speak for the others, I'm just saying people shouldn't get ahead of themselves. Between the hype for GTA4, IGN's reputation for giving out high scores (like Jade Empire) and the current (read: ****ty) state of gaming journalism, it's hard for my to take a 10/10 seriously, especially one for a series that usually has a number of technical glitches and some questionable mission designs like GTA. For all I know GTA4 could very well be deserving of a 10, what I'm saying is take the reviews with a grain of salt.

I always noticed those statements usually come from people who like niche games for some odd reason.

Well it's a rarity for a game to get a perfect score, especially if it's a popular franchise like GTA. It seems like these reviewers are biased. Maybe they want to make the fan happy? Do they want T2 happy? I don't know, but I really doubt this game is so great that it deserves a perfect score.
Let's look at the other games that got great scores, but are overrated. Halo 3 is a good example. It may have some great multiplayer options, but it's single player is short and weak, the multiplayer selection has many glitches, and Forge mode was a good idea, but it has a weak selection. Call of Duty 4 suffers from the same problems. Great multiplayer, but a weak single player. Super Mario Galaxy was too easy for me and I got bored quickly. Crysis has great graphics, but a boring campaign with dumb AI. Shall I go on?

The difference is that you've played all those games, whereas you haven't played GTAIV yet. And to even insinuate that IGN gave it a 10 'to make T2 happy', without a shred of evidence, is quite silly. IGN is sometimes dumb, sometimes swept up in hype, but they aren't on any publisher's payroll. For that, you need to look no further than our home sweet home of GameSpot.

I've played Halo 1, 2 and 3.
I've played GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas.
I think I have reasons for my opinions.
Not able to get it unfortunately.
My mother just doesn't approve of me playing game where I can kill innocent civilians.
If it's a M rated game where I kill truely evil people or demons like DMC, MGS, or ninja gaiden then sure, she'll let me buy it. But she just crosses the line at GTA.
I haven't read both versions reviews, and correct me if I am wrong, but it doesn't seem that they held one version superior over the other.

That's not a good basis for comparison here. After GTA 2, which couldn't even manage an A rating, I'm willing to bet a great number of people were pessimistic about GTA 3. That is, until they played it. Who would've guessed that the next title in the series would go on to score a 9.6 (which is, ironically, a reverasl of GTA 2's score)?
Well I think the same thing applies here. this is the first next generation Grand Theft Auto title and I truly believe Rockstar has delivered on what it means to be "next gen. The AI has been improved, the targeting system is worlds better, the city is larger and more believable than any prior game in the series and the multiplayer (especially the free online mode) is looking amazing.
I know all of this should be taken with a grain of salt until you actually have a chance to play the game yourself, but to immediately damn it and say it's overrated is wrong in my opinion.
If IGN isn't just conjuring up BS, and GTAIV actually delves into who your character really is and makes all the senseless killing have actual consequence...then I'm probably going to get it.I'm still abit dubius tho-...wait...what is THIS:
"Partially depress the trigger and you have free aim, which is great for targeting tires or specific body parts."
....Sold.

They were careful not to say one is better than the other, but it does sound like the PS3 version is more stable from what IGN wrote.I haven't read both versions reviews, and correct me if I am wrong, but it doesn't seem that they held one version superior over the other.

Seven page review? Goddamn, that's long. Is this a review, or a novel?
I haven't been too hyped for GTA4 (didn't like San Andreas that much), and just seeing a 10 for a franchise that traditionally gets very high scores from the media (every GTA since 3 has gotten straight 10s from EGM, for example) isn't going to instantly change my mind from "don't care too much" to "MUST HAVE NOW!"
But if they're right about the series actually being serious and having consequence and things like that, I'm definitely going to have to pick it up sooner rather than later.
I'm not going to really be able to buy it for a few weeks anyways, so I'll wait and see what people think before I make my decision.

No. I'm just being skeptical over a game. I've hyped many games in the past. They didn't live up to my expectations so I was disapointed in them. I want GTA IV to be as surprising to me as any other new game. I want a good experience this time. I want something that actually entertains me. I want a game that came out of nowhere.
Considering 10 now means "Prime" and having a Launch Center now a days usually means at least AAA, we may be seeing another AAAA in the near future.funnymarioAAA for sure at least, but given how review embargos tend to work and the only ones out so far are AAAA reviews, I'd imagine if GS was giving GTA IV a 10, they'd have the review out already.

No it's not that. I mean every game I hype turns out dissapointing. For example, I hyped Gears of War so much. I thought it was going to be better than Halo. Well, I was wrong, and I didn't have as much fun than I did with Halo 2. Super Mario Galaxy also dissapointed me. I thought it was goin g to be the greatest Mario game of all time. I was wrong because it was so easy for me that I got bored and decided to play something else. It may just be me, but I may be losing my taste in gaming. I'm afraid to pick up games now because I'm afraid they will be dissapointing. I try listening to my gut, but my mind contradicts me. I can't control it. I need someone to tell me if I would like a game or not.
This is the most hyped I've been for a game since TLoZ: Twilight Princess, and a perfect score from IGN, my favorite online source, certainly doesn't help any. Now if only they didn't release the game right in the middle of finals week...HoffgodQFT...I hate you rockstar!
I just paid off my Limited Edition preorder this afternoon and found out I'm not working the midnight launch! I can't wait to get the game and hop online with you guys (well, those of you with the 360 version of course) :D.The_Game21x
Me too :D
But I am currently on a GTA IV media drought b/c I don't want to see any gameplay before I play it myself.
