Hey, so me and a couple friends of mine have started a band and need some poblicity. We're trying to play at this Local Musicians thing that goes on ever Friday untill the end of August, no luck though, their booked untill an act cancles. We're also playing at places like the library, movie theatre, and such to see if people like us. Does anyone here have any ideas on how to get our voices out there. Like, to see if we're any good. Which we are, most people like us. Anywho, any ideas? Really appreciate it.

Back when I was gigging regularly, we used get a lot of gigs from jerseyshows who runs a small circuit on southern Jersey.  We'd always try to hook up with other more experienced bands, since sometimes they would invite us to open for them if they liked us.  There was also this small record label who used to get us shows, but that never went anywhere.

What helps is if you're close to a city, especially one like New York.  There are tons of bars and clubs to play in there, at least if you're all 18.

You should record a video of your band at a gig and upload it to GS so we can see you guys play.

Yeah, me and a friend Stuart wrote a song (I wrote lyrics and he helped with guitar and he sings) and I recorded it on my MP3 player, it's a shockingly good recording. I've been passing it around to poeple to see if they like us.

http://www.files.bz/files/7665/Voice060725001.mp3

I'm on guitar and Stuart's singing. He messed up a couple times singing by forgeting words at one part and singing a line wrong, like lines that go "oh what a cruel ghost we've got" and the like, he drug on the "got" when he's not supposed to. It sounds better the other way but it's good anyways.

Play at the Battle of the Bands, or at events in outdoor areas where they have food and stuff; they usually are looking for good cheap ameteur bands to play at those things, we have a lot of those in Minneapolis.

Well good luck with that.  And another piece of advice I didn't mention before...try to make sure your band is really tight before you start playing a lot of shows.  Its tempting to just start playing out once your band sounds halfway decent (since thats why you started a band right?), but you're not going to impress anybody if you're sloppy and making mistakes.  Even if your songs are good, your band needs to have them perfected if you want people to listen to you.  If you do sound good and bring a lot of people to you with to your show, you'll get the club owner to start respecting you a whole lot more.  Its also a very good idea to have some kind of CD with you that you can sell or give out.  You'll always want to be getting more people into your music, and its hard to do that if you have nothing to give them after a show.

You should start a myspace profile for your band ;) I know it sounds kinda stupid, but that's a way to get your band's name out. With that myspace, you could also record a few of your songs and upload them, so people can hear them. I'd add you guys to my friends too, which is what counts most ;) :D :P

New recording available for listening. This one is called So Mature Now. Written by me and Stuart both, mostly Stuart. He's also singing again and I'm on guitar. This one is a differant style. I think the other one is better but this one is pretty good too if you like it's style.

That was pretty good. You have a good voice. The only thing is that I think you could use some more instrumentals. Drums, Keyboard, Bass Guitar, something. I don't know if it's just me, but just having 1 guitar in the background is annoying. Lyrics were good too. Also, about the myspace thing. Myspace can only hold 4 songs for you, so you wouldn't need too many recordings.

NOT ME SINGING THAT IS MY FRIEND STUART Just to clear that up. also. Yeah, those are just first recordings. I've already written drums for Limbo and So Mature now. So Mature Now is just gonna be acoustic and faint drums though. Limbo however, is gonna have electric guitar, drums, bass, and cello. So yeah....it'll be sweet.... Gonna be a while before we get anymore recordings. Stuart is out of town for about a week so yeah. Those who are eagerly waiting for more. Sit tight.

Both songs sound good and I'm sure once you get a bit more experience with guitar they will be much better. The vocals could also use a bit more improvement but again, you guys just need practice. You do need more instruments also, but I'm sure that will come along. Personally, I don't think you guys are readdy to start gigging however. You need more music, more instruments and more practice. Those things will come along with time. For now, I would try and form relationships with more experienced bands. You know how Euphoriette kinda piggybacked on Vendetta Red for a bit? Try do something along those lines. Not only will being around more experienced musicians help you improve, but it will probably help get your name out there. The myspace page is a good idea because it will make it a lot easier to share your music. You can't count on that to earn you fans though. Try to get involved in the local music scene and when you're ready, start playing whatever gigs you can get your hands on.

I agree we need to practise more. We just need to get tight. Those are just two recordings I needed to get our style our style and feel out there. Kinda "tastes" if you will. Also here's the list of instruments we're including in songs.

Guitar (acoustic and electric of course)
Drums
Bass
Cello
Violin
Harmonica
Flute
Trumpet

That's all I can remember for now. It's a pretty good combination of tools I think, from what I've heard it's all working out together really nicly. We've also got a lot more music than this. Me and Stuart are working on 2 more songs together, Stuart and Logan are working on a song. We've already written about 7 together. Also I'm counting on Stuart to come home from his trip with at *least* 3 more songs. Oh, and I'm working on a few myself. Which is a PAIN without a real guitar, all I have is drums and a bass guitar. We definatly need more practise. With Stuart going out of town right after I get back into town, this is hard. Logan and I however have been getting together and practising. Him on his cello/bass and me on drums. So we've been getting the hang of each other that way, and me and Stuart are pretty tight as it is. We just need to get a lot more real practises together.

I do kinda agree that we arn't really ready for gigging. I mean, we started or got together and formed a *real* band only about a month or so ago. I just really want to get to this local musicians thing to get our sound and name out. I've been going to it for the past weeks and the talent that goes there and performs, really doesn't have any talent. There's a lot of bands that really suck, like this group of 14 year olds. They used the same powerchord for every one of their songs, and it just stunk.

I also noticed that every teen I've heard so far, is really, really, *really* trying to sound like Kurt Cobain.

Thanks again everyone for the compliments.

No problem. Sorry if I've been a bit critical but I think if you guys stick at it, you could do well. I just needed to stress the point that you really do need to stick at it. Practice practice practice. There are far too many startup bands that forget how important that is. Also, I could help out on trumpet stuff if you guys need it. I'm sure you could probably find some better trumpet players, but I would be willing to work wth you guys a bit if no one else is on hand.

Yeah, definitely.  The reason I said before to practice a whole lot before you play out is because too many bands start getting gigs way too early and get discouraged when people don't like them.  Even if you have all the potential in the world, people aren't going to listen to you unless you're tight.

Yeah, this I understand. Practise is a number 1 priority. Stuart got back today so we should get together all this week. That'll help a lot.

Okay guys, honestly. What band names do you like more?!

Servo
or
Talk of The Town
or
The Sunbeams

I think Talk of The Town is the coolest band name ever, and like, a million people agree with me, instead of my band mates. Same with Servo. and they love The Sunbeams, I honestly think it sounds really unprofessional.

What do you guys think?

Yeah, I love Talk of The Town. I think it's just strictly a cool name. And we're from Marysville Washington. Why do you ask?

Well my band's gonna be doing gigs soon in the NYC area, and if you guys were from around here I'd say we could do a show together or something.  But I think it'll be a while before we make it out to the West Coast.  :P

Sorry. I really have no experience with that kind of stuff. I may listen to music like a freak, but I have no clue how to play at all.

Lol, yeah. Probobly a long time before we make it to NYC. What I imagine for this band, is keeping really down low for a couple years considering two of the members are 14. Meaning we can't play at most of the places. then onces we're all older, hella tight, a lot better at our instruments, and are writting songs better. Then I dunno, I just have a feeling that tells me we're not going anywhere for a long long while.

Two new recordings, I'm not too hyper about these ones, but injoy. I'm also not in them lol. Stuart (my friend) on guitar and vocals. Logan (Other homie) on backup vocals and second guitar.

PS. Still thinking of a band name. Siiiigh.

Anyone have any ideas they are willing to throw out? Thanks.

I only had time to listen to So Mature Now. I actually really liked it - quite relaxing. You seem pretty old-school, kind of reminds me of the Beatles. You almost having a Pink Floyd sound. You listen to them?

That's a song I wrote myself and am playing by myself. It's really choppy and it's a bad recording. I recorded it with Mp3 my Mp3 while my guitar was hooked up to the computer threw an adaptor. I also messed up a lot. Sorry...I was tired....still.....it kinda sucks...

anywho...tell me what you think? Thanks.

Adam.

http://www.files.bz/files/7665/Sounds%20in%20the%20Night.mp3 New song WOOOO! This is called Sounds in the Night, written by me, performed by Stuart. This one was really annoying to record. We recorded 11 times before we could get Stuart to stop mssing up. The recordings are pretty hilarious. You hear the good song then all of a sudden he screams and he's like "WRONG VERSE!! UGH!!" it's funny. Anywho, I hope you like it.

You guys can feel free to post any of your music here. Or other arts. That'd be cool. Obviously, I use files.bz to host my songs. It's free and you can link without getting banned.
