This is a guide I found that explicitly fits my current phone as it is upgraded to 2.3.3 with the OTA update for gingerbread. Suffice to say, I want to root my phone, but I don't want to screw it up or anything. I am a computer science student, so it isn't a matter of me getting overwhelmed, I just wanted to know if this is a good guide to go by (XDA is awesome, so I am fairly trusting of this guide already) for a first time Android root.

PS: Sorry if this is considered being annoying/breaking the rules of the board. Also, sorry for not linking, but I honestly really hate this text area. It always seems to find errors and freak out.

That seems to be a fairly solid guide. HTC phones are always a bit tough to root, but I don't see any problems there.

Just rooted my phone, it wasn't too bad. Even as a a solid computer user, it was a little hairy at times. As other people will no doubt see this thread, I would like to put up the guide I actually used (both of them do the same thing, but this one holds your hand a bit more).

One thing that neither explicitly state is that you install the HTC drivers after downloading them. Stupid that I didn't assume it, but I assumed nothing with this process.

Now that you're rooted, you should give Ice Cream Sandwich a try. ;) My personal favorite, and the one I'm using right now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380478 Flash this recovery, it's amazing. Works using the touchscreen. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1400645 Other fun things you can try: MIUI: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=915527 Sense 3.5: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278498

Oh, wow, thanks for all the links. I will definitely have to try that Recovery with the touchscreen GUI. As for MIUI, I really don't like it as it looks just like an iOS, which honestly, I really don't like very much.

MIUI, while it looks like iOS, works differently. You can theme the hell out of it. If you want to continue using Sense, I recommend either Synergy or MikG, since they are the most stable. The Sense 3.5 link I gave you in that previous post is pretty good too, with just a couple of issues. The AOSP (Android Open Source Project) ROM you'll want to try is Cyanogenmod (http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=supersonic).

Yeah I have an evo 4g, though it's blacklisted now I got kicked off sprint, cyanogen is the way to go, so much faster than Sense. I recommend launcher pro as well.

What did you do to get it blacklisted?

Probably running a Verizon PRL on his phone in order to use their network for data, resulting in high roaming and eventual termination.
