I am considering getting an iPhone 4s as a $100 smartphone seems fine to me as I really don't play many games (but that may change with iOS) and I mostly just browse the internet or check my email. I am upgrading from an HTC Evo 4g and I was just wondering if the iPhone 4s is still worth getting. I really don't care much for the bigger screen (both will be a downsize from my current phone anyway) as I am more worried about battery life and CPU speed. If I get a iPhone 4s now, would I have issues 2 years down the road because the newest iOS version is simply too much for the iPhone 4s' CPU? Also, how is the battery life on the iPhone 4s. I remember rumors that it was rather bad, but that was a long while back when it first came out.

It's still a good phone that you can count on several years of support ahead of it. I say do it

I'm assuming this is to get the iPhone 4S on contract?

If this is the case, my suggestion then would be save up the extra hundred and get the iPhone 5. Especially if you live in a 4g LTE area.

Nope, Sprint is slow to put up LTE. And for the price of an iPhone 5, I would probably go Samsung GS3. The $100 iPhone 4S on contract is what makes me want it.

Never buy a cheap smartphone. You'll be stuck with it for 2 years and the cost will be pretty much the same because the data costs that same. Unless your carrier charges extra for LTE, in which case go ahead and get the 4S.

That is why I am looking at an iPhone 4s. At least from what I have seen, it'll be supported for awhile to come, whereas I am not so sure about the Galaxy Nexus as (my opinion), Android has a nasty habit of killing support for their phones quickly.

Just get the 5. It'd resell better down the road.

Though I am suffering from lightweightgate and tallgate issues.

Get the 5 for the simple fact that it has LTE support.

Both the iPhone4S and 5 will enjoy good support for a few years. They're both very capable phones.

As I said above, the reason I am even considering an iPhone 4S is because it is $100 on contract. If it wasn't for that, I would be getting a Samsung GS3 (as it is a very nice phone). I just find the iPhone 5 to rather lackluster relative to Android phones in the $200 (on contract) range, but at the $100 range, the iPhone 4S appears to be the one to beat.

You shouldn't have any issues with the iPhone 4S when it comes to support, Apple has quite the number of devices using the A5.

I don't know Sprint's pricing or how many years the contract is (assuming 2 years?), but here in Canada with Rogers, the iPhone 4S is $80 (w/ 3yr), the Galaxy S3 is $160 (w/ 3yr) and the iPhone 5 is $180 (w/ 3yr).

To my surprise the new LG Optimus G is only $130 (w/ 3yr), so that might be an option and at the same time is significantly better than the GS3 (I don't know Sprint's pricing, but if there is any indication from Rogers' the Optimus G should be less than the GS3). There is also the Nexus 4 coming in the next few weeks, but I don't know pricing on that (same hardware as the Optimus G, but using software direct from Google). If you do consider another Android phone, at this point the GS3 would be a waste, unless there was a reasonable price drop.

^ Just to add to my last post, turns out the Nexus 4 will cost $299 (8GB) and $349 (16GB). I don't know the carrier pricing yet.

In the end, the you'll end up saving $100 over two years and in two years, you probably won't wish you hadn't spent the extra $100. My point is, you may regret getting the 4s, but by getting the 5, you're guaranteed to have the latest, whereas the 4s is over year old. Whether or not the 4s will still do what you want it to do is a different matter. Whatever the 4s can do though, the 5 will likely do better.

It is. It's also capable of running virtually any game on the market right now.

Nothing at all wrong with the 4s. A half inch of screen isn't enough to make me want to break my contract for a 5.

Nothing wrong with it but coming from a 4.3" screen you might just find the screen a be tiny. There is very little between the 4s and 5 besides a slightly bigger screen.

It's okay, but the iphone 5 is better, and there's better android devices too (s3, nexus 4). you might just want to wait a bit. and the battery life is okay, but battery life on alot of smartphones aren't great imo.

The 4S is still a viable smartphone and worth the small investment. Although, the iPhone 5 is slightly better (yes, slightly better) - the 4S still is quite capable though.

After using an iPhone 4 for 2 years and upgrading to the iPhone 5, I really don't see any huge improvements. Yes, it is faster but it still uses the same boring OS. If my 30pin connection isn't broken I would still be keeping my iPhone 4. Get the iPhone 4s if you want to save some money.
