It is often suggested that android is just a copy OS, little do people realise the things that android did first things that have eventually became the standard for competitors as well.

1. The revolutionary notification center of android was a part of it from day one, nobody had done notifications like that before and eventually the competitors had to give in and adopt a similar style.

2. Over the air updates - now a standard throughout all platforms in the world this was something introduced by google from day one.

3. High resolution screen - many people falsely believe the iphone 4 was the game changer for smartphone resolution. It was not!! The motorola droid was the first phone which took a quantum leap over the screen resolution and general quality of previous phones and forced apple to get out of their comfort zone of the same screen for 3 years!!

4. Free turn by turn navigation, once again something that we now see is being copied by competitors.

5. Social network integration - once again now a standard for all platforms!!

There are lots more things but I have specifically listed things that got copied and things which influenced competitors to come back harder. I believe the list is going to get bigger in future, NFC was also introduced by google and could become the standard in the future for all platforms. Anybody who thinks android didnt innovate needs to think things more reasonably.

Both were released in november 2009....the HD2's pixel density and general quality was no match for the moto droid screen. It was the best screen until the galaxy S and iphone 4 landed. It really started the screen wars...

The HD2 is perhaps revolutionary for the screen size craze but not in terms of screen quality.

Oh ya the SE Xperia X1 I didnt know about that. I suppose that would be the first "retina" screen, man even I was of the impression that apple made the first 300+PPI screen.

Anyways the moto droid still remains pretty big though. The X1 had a resistive screen with poor sunlight performance, the moto droid screen is superior overall. You could say the droid is the first phone with a "complete" screen having no major weakness.

A few things to point out: 2) My old Samsung Rant (dumb phone with features) had OTA updates. 3) The Droid wasn't a particularly high resolution device relative to other high end phones.

1) Growl Notifications on OSX, 2006. 2) My Sidekick and Blackberry had OTA updates 3) HTC was the first to implement higher resolution. Even then, the HD and Moto Droid are not as high resolution as Retina display. Retina Display is an innovation in screen resolution. One that has everyone scrambling to match or outdo. 4) Hardly has to do with innovation more than it has to do with Google intentionally nerfing the same app on iOS due to conflict of interest. Hardly matters. 5) facepalm material. Remember how long it took for Android to even have a working FB app? More less FB Chat. What Microsoft is doing is more innovative than what Android has ever offered. Android started off as a blackberry and Palm OS rip, only to quickly imitate iOS literally right after its announcement.

It's funny how you're trying to use "prior art" to dismiss Android "firsts". You realize the can of worms you opened up, right?

I don't think any of these points are factually accurate, with the possible exception of point #5. Growl has been around for years and I don't know if anything preceded it, I've had OTA updates on my last few phones including my Blackberry Tour, free turn by turn has been available for a really long time with 3rd party apps like Waze and others (and I don't think I'd consider a free phone navigator an innovation anyway...). I don't recall if it was Google that was responsible for that integration or if it was FB.

Thank God they're finally re-launching the FB app on iOS (and maybe Android? I really don't know). It's so bad.

1. Hmm we are talking about phones here not computers.

2. The sidekick was produced byAndy Rubin so nevertheless the google camp did it first.

3. Actually it was sony which had the first retina screen as already pointed out. In any case 265 PPI is bloody good however you cut it.

4. Google developed it doesnt it? And android was the first platform that got it? Ya google sure deserve credit it seems.

5. No I dont remember I havent been using android for that long. Doesnt matter we are talking about right now.

Good thing android imitated the clickable icons thing from iOS, look where those awful tiles have got microsoft.

It's the very nature of android anything can be integrated fairly easily and anything can be kicked out.

I disabled google+ from my google phone without even requiring root access, thats freedom for ya.
