If the rumor about the player being able to enable/disable or at least adjust the level of "3D-ness" is true then the 3D-feature can only be little more than a gimmick and not really add to or affect the gameplay in any way. It's basically reduced to a "neat" visual effect. How could it be anything else if you can play the game just as well with the effect toned down or disabled?

I don't believe that Nintendo would design a new DS that only add 3D visuals and no real new gameplay feature.... the question is what.

Could we get a "holographic control system" where you can actually interact with the 3D visuals with 3D controls, a sort of 3D touch system where you can touch the 3D objects where they appear to be and you can actually not only move objects on a 2D plane as with the DS but in full 3D, push and pull and everything.
That could be cool but then the 3D visuals could not be disabled or it would b, so I guess if the rumor above is true then this is not it...

I think it may be neat in certain situations, but as mentioned if you can turn it off it obviously can't be anything important to gameplay. I'm thinking minor touches like being able to tilt the handheld a bit to peek around corners in a shooter, or help you spot semi-hidden pieces in a 3D puzzle games. It'll probably end up being more of a gimmick than anything. Or it'll just take four years before any developers figure out what to do with it, like the DS's second and touch screens. Some of them still haven't figured it out.

It's been said to be powerful as a gamecube, and 100% backwards compatible with all DS games. It's a totally new next-generation handheld.

IMO, its going to be a gimmick. Nintendo is known for that. Like in super mario, the clouds will stand out at you, and when u hit an enemy it flies off the screen. Stuff like that.

First off, what the hell are you talking about? Ok, so to the OP, yes it would be cool if we could move holograms with our fingers, unfortunately I don't see that happening this time around. This isn't really a gimmick, it's just the next logical step. After two dimensions, it only makes sense to go to three. This kind of gaming will probably never go away once it's widely introduced.

I really don't see how 3D can be interactive like touchscreens are. It's nothing more than visual effects. So as of right now I see it as a gimmick, but hopefully, Nintendo does something unique with it.

Ok, after reading that post ten times, I understand you're trying to tell us how boring and predictable Nintendo will be with their use of the 3D tech. It will be comparable to the Wii, yes it can be gimmicky, but if done right, you should see some awesome things with it.

I was also hoping the 3D would affect gameplay and be innovative in some way, and not just be a visual thing. Some people have suggested that maybe it can be turned off and on because it is only needed for 3DS games, but would hinder regular DS games, which kinda makes sense.

That could make sense too, like changing the brightness of the screen conserves power. Then if you are working on a regular DS game, you could turn it down to conserve power.

The 3DS is backward compatible. You wont need to turn the 3D "off" to play a DS game. It will know it's a DS game and play it like one.

It's not meant to enhance gameplay, and I don't see how it could. It's just a visual effect to make games more interesting and fun to play.

I really don't like 3D. Don't like it in games don't like it in movies. I would rather developers take the time/money they are going to use to make the game 3d and make the game better. Use the extra processing power to improve the game (ex: AI, number of characters on screen). I am sorry, but 3D is really lame. I love all of my Nintendo handhelds to death but this just scares me........ a lot.

Unfortunately, knowing Nintendo, I am going to call this gimmick. I would be so much more interested if there was no 3D but it was still heavily rumoured to be very powerful.

3D does not take that much effort to develop for. In fact 3D solutions on the PC can actually work with many games that were never designed for it. It also shouldn't put a significantly greater strain on the hardware.

True. Unfortunately this makes me believe that the 3D implementation of the 3DS won't really bring anything new to the table.

I hope 3DS gives us more than just new visuals, Nintendo is usually all about the gameplay, I hope we get something new in the controls department too.

well lets be honest nintendos handhelds really dont have any problem with games they have a massive selection compared to say the psp the only reason i havnt bought a ds yet was because i am waiting for the next gen of handhelds to come out, its just a natural eveloution for the games to get good looking as technology advances and 3d seems to be part of this and as for myself i would much prefer to see something like 3d become widespread compared to say motion controls at least 3d wont (hopefully) spawn a uncountable amount of casual games

I think it will be a gimmick. 3D on a handheld just seems wasted. How well will you be able to enjoy the 3D while on the go? Will the 3D even be that good? There are very many questions surrounding it and I would rather not have 3D on a handheld.

It's all but confirmed that there will be an analog stick. There may be an accelerometer as well.

3D actually makes more sense on a handheld then it does in the living room ATM. Because the device is generally used by a single person at a controlled viewing angle you can employ an autostereoscopic display without the limitations of such technology becoming a problem.

Well, the thinking is that the 3D can be used in clever ways to enhance gameplay. Like the demonstration video from that DSi game where they tilt the system to find things hidden in the background. I imagine the 3D being able to obscure hidden chests in RPGs, or maybe serve as a control of some sort. The system has some sort of motion-sensors, and while I have no clue how they work, someone drew a concept picture where they imagined the player laying the system open flat, and chess pieces would 'rise' from it, which they could 'move'. I don't know, it's just neat to speculate...We really don't know what all the system can do for sure yet.

I don't think most players play handheld games on the go. I tend to enjoy playing games on a handheld, which I can carry freely with me around the house. I usually close it up when I am going somewhere, and pull it out when I'm there. It's great because in multiplayer games, you have your own screens, nobody can see what moves you are making, and it's your own personal gaming unit. I think anyone can understand owning your own personal electronic gadget. You can't take a stereo with you to enjoy music on the go, and in fact many people enjoy their IPods more than they do regular stereo systems.

Word. I only use my stereo if I am having a party or if I want surround sound for my TV (movies or games) my iPod and Bose headphones are higher quality anyways. :P I also enjoy my DS more inside either at mine or the significant other's house. On the go there is to much glare from the sun.

I am ready for this new handheld and am so pumped. I am just scared that it is going to be more annoying than entertaining.

That's good, but what I really meant with "new controls" - sorry for not being clear on this - was something completely new that hasn't been done before, such as the controls for the Wii.
And no, I'm not saying we should have Wii controls for the 3DS ;)

Technically the controls for the Wii were not completely new. It mostly just popularized them.

Of course not, but they hadn't been used in such a fashion for console gaming before. So while it wasn't a technological breaktrhough, it was a breakthrough in how games can be controlled.

Actually there was a game console that came out in 2004 called the XaviXPort. Like the Wii it was built around motion controls. In some ways it's even more advanced. You can see a video of it here. (note: I do not agree with his assertion that the Wii was a "rip off" of this)

Interesting.. while the technology isn't the same, the concept is very similar, perhaps too similar for it to be a coincidence... Nintendo might have gotten a lot of inspiration from this system indeed.

While looking up something else, I happened upon this article. It talks about a pressure sensitive touch technology. And what's interesting is that company who licensed it actually supplies touchscreens to Nintendo.

This certainly isn't confirmation of anything. But who knows, maybe the 3DS will bring something fairly innovative in terms of control.

That coupled with multi-touch could probably be used in very interesting ways.
