I just want to share my experience yesterday that I had with a person who thought the 3DS was just a gimmick and waste.

My younger cousin stopped over and we were going to hang out and play some games. We got on the topic of the 3DS already cutting price, etc etc. He laughed and said "About time, but it still isn't worth $170". Although I agree that $250 was a bit more than I wanted to pay, I definatly argue that the device is worth at LEAST the $170 they are dropping it to. So I said, ok....defend your argument. As with most people I have had this discussion with, there was no real argument. I handed him the 3DS. I had him play the built in AR games, Face Raiders, watched some preview videos off the e-shop, and of course play a bit of the retail games. He was absolutely blown away by the system. He loved the AR games and was completely impressed with it manipulating your own surroundings. Within 20 minutes of playing with most of its features, the story is completely changed. He didn't realize there was much more to the 3DS than just the ability to do 3D.

There is my story. Now, with that little bit of experience the end user has completely changed their tune and impression of the 3DS. I know the 3DS really has had a decent amount of ads / publicity, but was it going about it wrong? Here is a younger generation kid that is surrounded with nothing but false impressions of a device, and myself (NOT a marketing expert) was able to provide a significantly different view on the device in minutes. Do we need more demo units showing all its features and not locking it to a single game? Do they need to back off of the "3D" feature and focus on more of it's other perks? What are your opinions and experiences with your 3DS?

I think i had the reverse experience. Seeing it in magazines and TV commercials made it look "cool." After playing it for about an hour it started bothering my eyes so I shut it off. The 3D itself became "old" after that 1 hour. Depending on the game there were significant changes in the effect. Although Zelda looks good in 3D i prefer to play it with the 3D off. The colors are more vibrant and it looks like you're running around in a painting.

The improved graphical fidelity of the system should have been more of a pushing point. They went on and on about the 3D, but barely any mention of just how much more powerful the system is.

To gamers who pay attention to specs instead of advertising, they made a few mistakes. Most notably the sparse launch lineup. Key features not being available right away also didn't help, and neither did the abysmal battery life (almost requiring replacing for a third party).

At the price of a DSiXL, this thing is an absolute steal now.

I don't think Nintendo made it clear enough that this was a new system and not simply another iteration of the DS, so, yeah, I'd blame poor marketing.

I've heard so many conversations from parents who thinks it's just another DS with the 3D effect stacked on. Sometimes I talk to them explaining its a whole new portable and its features, and I even show them my 3DS, but sometimes I don't even bother. BTW I don't work on a videogame store.

This. What were they thinking? They are making the same god-damn mistake with Wii U, nobody wants it and it doesn't have a clear purpose to it. 3DS sounds like another rehash of DS, naming it something else gives some excitement and curiosity I think. On a side note, I played Pilot wings resort and I wasn't impressed by the 3D at all. I tried OOT at a booth and I was blown away by the impressiveness of the 3D, it was truly remarkable. Maybe they should have demoed that instead.

Absolutely and Nintendo is finally realizing it, this is why that after 4 months of little advertising and concentrating on 3D (which might actually been a negative thing for the 3DS considering 3D movies are losing popularity) they're finally realeasing commercials like this

in order for the 3ds to sell well is to get good games but in order to get good games the 3ds must sell well to make good games.

maaaan,, marketing too damn tough

it is like an un ending spiral that needs to stop and get it balance.

this has to be it, the price cut has to be the balancing factor

This is a heck of a step in the right direction for advertising. Clearly define what this is. I enjoy my 3DS (with it's limited titles) , and I hope it doesn't tank. I hate to see any console/handheld fail.

That commercial is long, with ads, you have about 10 secs before people lose interest. You can only tout one thing in 10 seconds and you might as well go for systems gimmick. I think the best way to advertise it is to simply focus on the games, they have a lot of software coming up and they should focus on that and end it with "Only on Nintendo 3DS" You have to keep it simple with advertisement.

Since when is a minute long commercial too long? That's about you're average length of a commercial and this one starts off pretty well show-casing some "hardcore" (not "kiddy" mario) games with decent graphics and declares the next generation is here. I'm thinking anyone remotely interested in games would be invested in the commercial by this point.

Just my two cents.

No. The length of your average commercial these days ranges from 10-30 seconds.

The 3DS is a victim of a changing market.

There are more players on the market that offer similar content for less price. You see more casual, pick up and play games on iPhones and what not for $0.99 or so and versus the price of a retail game. A stronger emphasis on the eShop for those casual games would definitely help Nintendo, while still providing premium content for $39.99 (people will still pay that much for a Mario title or a Zelda title).

And I guess the same will happen with the Wii U... Nintendo has to change the name of it.

Whoever said that about the first ten seconds: a gamer is a different demographic than the average tv viewer- I don't own a PS3 but if there is a commercial for a game running, you bet I'm paying attention regardless of platform- it's a videogame commercial! Unless I've seen it more than ten times, i'm paying attention because I love videogames. And if I am sufficiently floored i'll buy a videogame system over one game.

That's a tough marketing angle, that would certainly be a new one for a game company to try and pull off. I would guess the only way to do that is by going on talk shows and things like that to talk about and then just throw in the OPTIONAL 3D thing at the end.
