Taken directly from 3DSbuzz.com:

One complaint many people had with the 3Ds is that after adding friends on their console, there wasn't a whole lot they could do with them. Other then see what games they liked and check their Friendcode, the communication was limited.

However, Nintendo put that to rest today by announcing the Nintendo Letter Box.

The feature works much like Picto Chat on the previous DS models, except takes the concept a lot further. 3DS owners will be able to draw messages and pictures onto their touchscreen which can then be sent to friends, or even be stored until you meet someone with StreetPass, and then the message will be sent to them.

As well as that, the messaging system allows you to choose from a preset list of backgrounds to decorate your message, and you will also be able to attach sound files and 3D pictures you have taken with your 3DS, and implement them into the message.

The Nintendo Letter Box will be available via eShop download this December. At the moment, it hasn't been given a price, so we assume it will be a free download, but that's subject to change!3DSBuzz

So its an app you have to launch separate from games? Really? Some tell me I'm wrong. That means, if I'm playing Mario Kart 7 online, and I see my friends list that someone just signed on, I have to exit MK7, open this app, then message them. Then start playing MK7 again, then if I want to see if I got messaged back I have to quit MK7 again and check the app? Why isn't this built into the friends list itself? Or am I grossly misinterpreting this as a app that can't be run at the same as software? Plz, I'll happy if someone tells me otherwise.

Thats what I initially thought, but when you really think about it, how do you think this 'app' messages your friends in the first place? After looking at it that way, I think the two are somehow linked, meaning most likely you wouldn't have to go through such a hassle.

*EDIT* It may even be an app that would replace the Friends List app altogether, you never know.

Not to mention the 3DS can multitask. I think it will just be a feature in the friend list (which you can access without leaving your current game).

Yea but there is only the five core essential apps that it can multi-task with. If this is anything below the top bar, then it probably isn't something that can multi-task I don't want it to be like this, and we don't know if it is or isn't multi-taskable yet, but it would very Nintendo

At this point I don't mind if it's a hassle to get it working. This app has been long overdue. This is me right now: :)

Or just use the built-in mic.

*EDIT* Now that I think about it, FOX news will be all over this one... "You can send pictures or video of your privates to strangers! Take it away from your children and smash it now!"

I really like this feature, it's great they took advantage of the 3DS's capabilities. As for the app, I think it will probably be a top bar app and be able to be multitasked. That's how most messaging systems are and although the DS didn't multitask Picto chat, the 3DS has more then enough power to run a game while being able to message a friend. It's hopefully going to be implemented in the top bar or be able to be multitasked.

According to the first and only "Nintendo Direct" video on Nintendo.com

The messaging system will be called "Swapnote," here in America atleast.

Can we just get a regular text option? Drawing on DS Systems is horrible.

Eh, I couldn't really care less.

I'm in my thirties and don't know anyone else with a 3DS, so I don't have a need for a messaging system on the 3DS. Good for the kids who have friends with a 3DS I suppose, but just use a phone, who cares?

I was hoping it was integrated into the friends list so I can chat between games but after reading some comments it seems that it may be a separate app. oh well better than nothing....

Since Mario Kart 7 is right around the corner with leaderboards and communities, this better be integrated into the friends list! :)

Seems pretty cool, I could see myself using this if I had some 3DS buddies. I hope it does replace the friends list system, but if it doesn't I still can't complain.

You know, the 3DS messages will be free, unlike sending a text on a phone.

I agree, that would be pretty pointless, but thankfully it does support StreetPass and SpotPass:

"Nintendo Letter Box: enables you to exchange messages with your friends via StreetPass and SpotPass. You can even add your own 3D Photos and voice recordings to the messages." - Nintendo.com

"You can send these messages to your friends, and they will recieve them via SpotPass. So if your friend is not online, they will get them as soon as they open up their 3ds. If they are online, they will get them instantly." - Nintendo3dsBlog.com

you can also IM from a phone, or use a number of other communication devices on a phone/computer that are free.

And, if you pay per text, you might need a new plan.

True, but this way it's linked directly to your 3DS friends list and doesn't require you to give out extra information to people and/or set up extra accounts to prevent giving out personal emails etc.
