Am I completely out of touch with reality? Is Kid Icarus a bad game?

Kid Icarus is a game that people have been waiting to play again for quite some time now. When the VC was announced and everyone started making "must play" VC game dream lists, Kid Icarus was usually not too far from the top. I myself have fond memories of Kid Icarus, I bought the Japanese GBA cart because I couldn't wait for the Wii version. I've finished the game at least twice in the last year, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Now Gamespot has reviewed Kid Icarus and given it a mediocre score. Reading the review, I can't find any fault on the part of the reviewer....everything he says seems to be true, I just never regarded them as problems before. I am a little shocked at the score...I always thought it was a good game.

1.  What's the general feeling with Wii onwers about the Kid Icarus franchise?

2.  What do you think of the original game?

3. If Nintendo redid the series in 3D for a console release, would anyone care?

The original Kid Icarus was a fantastic game for it's age, sure it's a bit too hard for now days standards but that dosen't change the fact that Kid Icarus was one of the most complete games of it's time you really had variation when going through levels some time you had to go upwards or other times it was side scrolling and talk about the cool last battle on the sky. The cool thing also is that Kid Icarus featured zelda-like dungeons that were hard as hell but really cool as you could get the maps and release the petrified winged warriors that would asist you later in the game, it also had curency to buy items, when i think about it now i definitely think that Nintendo should aim for an rpg-adventure zelda like style for a sequel regarding Kid Icarus franchise.

God forbid a game actually be challenging for the sake of being a worthwhile experience. Gamespot has always had terrible reviews. If I want an unbiased opinion I go to IGN. Even Nintendo Power is less biased.

Infact, Kid Icarus is not like a Zelda game. It's more like the original Metroid game. In some levels, it's side-scrolling platformer a la Super Mario Bros but most the game is like Metroid. I'll download it if I can because it's one of the most challenging game ever made.

Well GS reviews games for the general public, not just you alone. The general population may not take as well to an extremely challenging game as you do.

Sometimes games that were great in the past just don't hold up under new standards. The VC is a painful reminder of this. Sometimes a classic from the past should just stay that way.

You're right, games were you go from one area to another pushing the same button over and over again don't do a lot for me.

I will admit, items being more of after thought is most certainly correct (game could have always been better in that regard, I completely agree).

Also, in regards design, I can see how person would feel that way, though, I think he was being bit too harsh...

In addition, while I understand that everyone may not enjoy challenge, in turn, does not mean everyone will not. For those who do not, I can understand, however, that is why you state something along the lines of "fun, simple and challenging game that everyone may not enjoy" (or something else along those lines).

Anyhow, with all of this being said, while I disagree with score (I think it could been in high 5.0/low 6.0 range, at the very least), I can understand it...though...I think its clear seem as if only put view of casual gamer wanting something easier into considering (should have tried little harder into putting both views into context, however, I digress).

Gamespot decided that games that were too hard for the public recieve lower scores AFTER the 9.6 rating for Vagrant Story was released.  Some reviewers are leary of giving a good name to classics that have been around for 15+ years because it makes the industry itself look like its sat around and piddled for those 15 years.  Everyone else has been playing GBA games for too long, and thus becomes disappointed when games only use 1-2 buttons instead of every button available on the controller.
Kid Icarus is a SKILL based adventure game with side scrolling elements.  If you can handle jumping while shooting then you can handle this game, but just be ready to avoid the eggplant throwers, else this game gets crazy hard to find the healer that will set you free from the spell.  Besides, you dont need totally awesome ratings to be a game expert, you need games that appease you and not someone else.  Don't let one man let you down, especially when your friends will look at your profile and see that they might like to try a game you gave a 9.0 yourself.

I think its a great game. It still holds up pretty well today. Of course the graphics and sound are not up today's standards. The gameplay is still challenging and fun. I have to agree with the reviewer though. Everything he says is true, yet I still enjoy it quite a bit. I think it deserves about a 6.5. By the way, check out my union.

Huh? In case you didn't notice, we were talking about the classic NES game. I can understand how you might have missed that, since most of your experience with games doesn't go too far from Big Mutha Truckers.

Yeah maybe if you want to abuse them

It was an ok game back in the day, the complexity of the game overshadowed the faults of the game.
These days it doesn't even get a passing grade.

Kid Icarus is a fun, albeit tough, early NES action game. Maybe it's one of those title that you "just had to be there" when it came out. It doesn't have the graphics, it punishes you for mistakes, and the play control is old school NES al the way.

But so what? It's a cool game. Power ups, dungeons, and big bosses. It's a franchise that holds a lot of potential and I think that is why fans are interested in something new happening with it. Consider this game a blueprint for what may be to come.

The score was a bit harsh and if you have any interest in Retro gaming, the VC offers a lot more worse choices than the $5 you'll spend on KI.

dont take it to heart, the site for some reason seems to rank Nintendo VC games low relative to the other systems lately

It's a classic... like so many other retro offerings, if you didn't play it back in the day, you may wonder what all the fuss was about. And all the n00b kids will be crying because it doesn't hold your hand like games these days do. But I definitely got a lot out of this game back in the day, and I plan to DL it in the near future.

I've imposed a strike where I don't DL anything until I see Donkey Kong Country. It's not really effective, but I'm self-righteous and a little... off... so it appeases me well enough.

Most of the people who talked big about this game in the past few years never played it. They saw Pit in SSBM and he became a cause celebre among Nintendo faithful. The game just doesn't look any good. Hell, the original Metroid isn't fantastic these days either.

The thing is, it's such a big deal now that fanboys aren't going to admit that the game was no good. You're not alone though.

The day I rented Kid Icarus for the first time, my other choices were Wizards & Warriors and Karnov, both of which I had played and finished.

If you doubt Kid Icarus' greatness, just look at what else was available at the time. Even scarier, what other games were popular at the time.

We all had Super Mario Brothers because it came packed it with the NES, and Legend of Zelda actually doesn't take a long time to complete. Yes, there were better games, but they were very few and far between.
