Well, in US dollars, it comes out to roughly $64.73. YIKES!!!:o

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3171750

At an event in Japan to play up the March 28th, 5,980 yen ($64.73 -- yeah, they're going to charge that much for it over there) release of Dragon Quest IX for DS.

It may or may not change when it gets localized. But regardless, that is too expensive!!!

Also, DSi exclusive DQIX bundle:

Remember, DSi are NOT region-free, so think twice before you want to go head-over-heels for these slimes. Unless you can read, write, and speak Japanese, not worth it.

Yeah, I think they just pay more for stuff than we do. Nobody will buy the game if it costs 65 bucks.

to mimic everything everyone else has been saying.. japan's pricing is always higher.

i doubt that even the great taxing square enix would be as unwise as to price a ds game higher than new ps3/360 games.

and if they do, it will be an utter failure.

Heh is the DSi is only around 180$, the DQ limited edition bundle will be around 230$? I've never purchased a CE in my life, but if the outside "shell" was completely remolded instead of just a case, they might be on to something...

I would be very surprised if it was that much here. It is probably only that much in japan because SE knows that most people would pay that much for a DQ game there. In the US, the series is not as popular so most people would not pay that much.

No, that's not how it works. Selling things in foreign markets is not as simple as converting the price through an exchange rate.

I don't think its going to cost 65 over here, people won't buy it if it costs that much.

Considering thats going psst XBOX 360, and PS3 game price territory I highly doubt that number is going to stay. Unless there is some incentive (like a collectors edition or something), then all I can say is that it better be one great game.

Also a simple matter of demand. In Japan, the series is outrageously popular and people want the newest installments desperately enough to pay that. In North America, most people would just laugh at such a price.

It's going to be no more than $40 in the US don't worry, no one is going to buy a handheld game for that much that's absurd.

thats not so much

One month ago i paid 62us$ for a copy of Super Mario 64 DS, which is a 4 year old game, and i dont even like the game so much. Its just that i live in Argentina and here there are almost no stores that sell games. DS games can go up to 70us$, and there is absolutely no variety. I just chose mario because it was cheap compared to other games and it was the only good game on sale(most games were moviebased games)

and then they wonder why is there so much piracy...

Why dont you try to bought it online. Its like 40 dollars less one in good shape. Stores sometimes charge too much for a game in LA

To clarify, it's not so much that things are more expensive in Japan, but really just the value of the US dollar has plummeted compared to the Yen. A few years ago it would have averaged 120-130 Yen to the Dollar. Right now its just around 91 Yen to the Dollar.

This. DS games usually run about 50$. I bought Pokemon Platinum over here for like 48 bucks. Most new console games are closer to 70 bucks, too.

Holy cow! I don't know much about DQIX or what it is about or what it's like, but that seems like a ton of money for a ds game. I'll only buy it for that much if it can make me food and turn into a penguin.

Even though the US price will probably change once it's localised, I just still have this sick feeling that the game will be more than the usual Square-Enix $39.99 price tag.

$40 for a DS game is expensive as it is, I can't imagine it getting any more expensive. Guitar Hero makes sense because of the extra peripheral but DQIX will just be a game.

Just think, IF DQIX is priced at $59.99, that's like buying a PS3 or 360 game!

I expect at least $49.99. If it's more than that than that'd be too insane.

Games are always, ALWAYS more expensive in Japan. I recently ordered Ketsui: Death Label, which was $60, and before that, Bangai-O Spirits for $50 (before it was localized). It's a safe bet that the game will be the usual $40 (for a Squeenix game) when it hits America. There's no need to cause a scare about the game's price considering games usually go for 1.5x to 2x the cost of games in the US, Christ..

well this is a DSi game... maybe theyre going to sell for more? I mean theyre not going to sell for more to me, but some one will be buying them. I didnt know the DSi had region lock outs?! WTF the nintendo? Im not going to buy a new handheld from the company that cant even make decent console games. I love my DS and theres already alot of good games coming out in 09 for it. Will we need a DSi to play some new games? probably, and I bet its becuz it had more memory built into the system. This is all gayness, when they could have just released a memory add on to go into the GBA slot of the normal DS, instead they come out with a new handheld starting at $180?! that isnt even really a new handheld, its just what the GBAsp was to the GBA, with a memory upgrade.

This brings up an interesting question: If DQIX released and you heard nothing but great things about it (great story, adequate length, wonderful replayability, awesome gameplay), what's the most you'd be willing to pay for it? For me, I think I'd go as high as $50.

Don't know where you heard that.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/ds/data/937281.html

While there is a limited edition DSi tie-in, the game itself is for DS. No WAY would Square-Enix pass up on all of the established DS owners, considering that the DS prints money (worldwide but especially in Japan) and Dragon Quest is so popular in Japan there's actually a LAW against releasing a main entry in its series on a weekday. (because so many kids skip school... and many adults call in sick to their workplace... can you guess why?) True story.

You are totally wrong. This game is not going to be just for the dsi, is going to be available for all the ds versions. What square-enix is doing is to release a special skin for the dsi of this game and that doesnt mind that you are not going to be able to play this on your ds lite or ds.

Nintendo is releasing a new handheld system to atract more the attention of people that do not own a ds cause some people still think that handheld nintendo systems are just for kids (but they are totally wrong) They want to get this people with new features like music, video and the two cameras.

Honestly the highest i would want to pay for DQIX would be $39.99, I just can't justify paying more than that for a handheld game no matter how awesome the graphics may look.

...

I paid $60 for Ketsui: Death Label recently, a 2D shoot-em-up for the DS.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/zweihand/video%20game%20shots/Ketsui_DOOM.jpg

Import-only, though, so the extra cost is to be expected; everyone in Japan pays more for their games, and their economy-- until recently-- was even worse than ours. Not to sound like a weeaboo, but Americans can be so spoiled sometimes, damn...
