How does it really work? I put things up for bid, I have friends on my friend list for online, but I can't see any of their items up for bid.

On the surface, the auction house appears to be a great means of completing your collection, as it tone would assume that it would be at least feature items from gamers nationwide. Sadly, this is not the case at all. Items can be placed on auction during the appropriate span of time and a reserve price can be decided on, but you can only auction off one item per auction, which looks to amount to around one item per real-life week. When the bidding phase of the auction begins, you will have the ability to bid on items offered only by people on your Animal Crossing friend list and your Wii system friend list. In a bizarre twist, Animal Crossing actually utilizes the system list. Regardless, the end result is both a very limited audience for your item, and a very limited library of items to bid on. This flies in the face of what an auction house in a game of this nature should be. It is impossible for a mini-economy to form in which in-game items can attain a true monetary value.
The auction house is one of the few reasons to return to the city, as auctions commence at specific times during the week. Not only can you put your own items up, but you can also bid on other items beamed across WiiConnect 24 from other towns. The Happy Room Academy office is another point of interest, if not for the sole reason that you can get a better idea of what makes a good room, and even get ideas from sample rooms that appear in the back area of the building. Aside from that, the city area's pretty lacking -- even the other visitors provide little incentive to make more than one trip per day (if that), since they all tend to repeat the same things over and over, and rarely give any useful information or insight into upcoming events. And it certainly doesn't help the city becomes unavailable when visiting another player's town -- if you want to visit, you have to go back to your own town and then hop onto the bus.
